Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Calendar of the Register of the Queen's Majesty's Council in the Dominion and Principality of Wales and the Marches of the Same; (1535) 1569-1591: From the Bodley Ms. No; 904 The Honourable Society of Cymmrodorion have pleasure in including in their Record Series, and in publishing, this "Calendar of the Register of the Council in the Marches of Wales (1569 to 1591)," by a distinguished young English Scholar, Mr. Ralph Flenley, M.A., the author of Six Town Chronicles of England. The Society is indebted to Dr. C. H. Firth, Regius Professor of Modern History in the University of Oxford, for calling the Council's attention to the work, and for recommending that it should be published. Very soon after arrangements had been made for printing the book, the Author joined His Majesty's Army as a Lieutenant of a Battery of the 149th Brigade Royal Field Artillery, in the 30th Division of the British Expeditionary Force now fighting the German invaders in France. While occupied with his patriotic and loyal duty as an officer of His Majesty's Forces he had time only for a hasty revision of this work. The following letter addressed to the Editor of the Cymmrodorion Publications, which we are allowed to publish, speaks for itself, and is a fitting Preface to this volume: Dear Sir Vincent: Perhaps you will allow me to put in a letter what is more usually put in a formal preface? Some time after Mr. H. A. L. Fisher found or re-found in the Bodleian the MS. on which this Calendar is based, and suggested that I should edit it, the widespread discussion of the relations of the various parts of the British Isles gave a special if still academic interest to the study of the relations of England and Wales in Tudor times. But for various reasons it was not until the War had begun to cast its shadow over everything that I was fortunate enough to find a publisher in your Society. For this I need hardly say that I am grateful both to you and, through you, to your Society. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cardiganshire County History Volume 2 is published by the University of Wales Press on behalf of the Ceredigion Historical Society, in association with the Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Wales. This volume provides a comprehensive and authoritative account, written by distinguished authors in fifteen chapters, of the wide range of social, economic, political, religious and cultural forces that shaped the ethos and character of the county of Cardiganshire over a period of 600 years. This was a period of great turbulence and change. It witnessed conquest and castle-building, the impact of the Glyndŵr rebellion, the coming of the Protestant Reformation, and the turmoil of civil war. Over time, the inhabitants of the county developed a sense of themselves as a distinctive people who dwelt in a recognisable entity. From very early on, literate people took pride in their native patch; in the eyes of the learned Sulien (d. 1091) and his sons, the land of Ceredig was a sacred patria. Poets and scribes burnished the reputation of the county, and a vibrant poem by Siôn Morys in 1577 maintained that it was the best of shires and ‘the fold of the generous ones’.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Records of Early English Drama volumes make available historical transcripts that provide evidence of early English drama, music, ceremonial, dance, and other forms of communal public entertainment in Britain before 1642, together with the necessary interpretive introductions and notes to explicate the materials for the reader. Shropshire, in two volumes, is the eleventh publication in the series. In the introduction Alan Somerset surveys the social and economic history of each major borough and provides a commentary on the major issues raised in the documents. He discusses travelling performers routes, the places they performed, and the remarkable public exhibitions of high-wire artists, camels, bears, and giants. The records for this county are rich and varied, providing new detail about local playing and festivities. From Shrewsbury for example, comes the complete documentation of a unique, semi-circular outdoor amphitheatre. The documents reveal much - from robbery and riots - to the sometimes acrimonious disputes that show the growing Puritan opposition to sports, which attempted to combat an equally stubborn affection for traditional customs. These records are an invaluable addition to the scholarship of early drama, establishing as they do part of the total context of the great drama of Shakespeare, his predecessors, and his contemporaries.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Like the artists studied here, we pick and choose our Shakespeares, and through that labor another story emerges. Frozen in time on the page or screen, some of those collaborations continue to speak, but denuded of their immediate moment and surroundings; we are left to supplement the traces. In recovering that past, the present takes on greater clarity and contrast. But the proof must be in the telling. A writer lifts a pen. Enter the multiple forces—political and economic, psychological, formal, and technical—that serendipitously transform imagination into memory. Let the collaborative play begin."—from the Introduction Focusing on key writers, actors, theater directors, and filmmakers who have kept Shakespeare at the center of their endeavors over the past two hundred years, Collaborations with the Past illuminates not only the playwright's work but also the choices and responsibilities involved in re-creating culture, and the ingenuity and peril of the artistic process. By concentrating on rich yet problematic instances of Shakespeare's reanimation in such quintessentially modern forms as the novel and film, from Sir Walter Scott's Kenilworth to Kenneth Branagh's Henry V, Diana E. Henderson sketches a complex history of the pleasures and difficulties that ensue when Shakespeare and modern artists collaborate. Working with texts across the entire range of Shakespeare's career, Henderson demonstrates—through detailed analyses of novels including Jane Eyre and Mrs. Dalloway as well as filmed, televised, and staged performances—that art (even in the newest media) cannot avoid collaborating with the past. Only by studying that collaborative process can we comprehend Shakespeare and Anglo-American culture.
