Book excerpt: This book is a project that has been birth on the very inside of me from the time that I was a very young teenager who had developed a very huge crush on a very young lady who I had come to know and fall crazy and deeply madly in love with, but fear and my being shy had hindered any chance of us ever becoming anything but casual friends. Upon her moving, I became disgruntled and hurt because she was gone and never had the opportunity to find out how I had felt about her. Now comes the second most important character of the book moving into the neighborhood which resulted in a more meaningful and gainful experience because I had vowed to myself to never allow my fear and shyness to be the deciding factor on my getting or not getting a girlfriend. Now go purchase the book and read for yourselves the outcome and matters of a man's true carried feelings for two women at different times of their lives. Yours Truly, Dr. Cleveland Coley.

Book excerpt: Historically, Black Americans have easily found common ground on political, social, and economic goals. Yet, there are signs of increasing variety of opinion among Blacks in the United States, due in large part to the influx of Afro-Latino, Afro-Caribbean, and African immigrants to the United States. In fact, the very definition of “African American” as well as who can self-identity as Black is becoming more ambiguous. Should we expect African Americans’ shared sense of group identity and high sense of group consciousness to endure as ethnic diversity among the population increases? In Black Mosaic, Candis Watts Smith addresses the effects of this dynamic demographic change on Black identity and Black politics. Smith explores the numerous ways in which the expanding and rapidly changing demographics of Black communities in the United States call into question the very foundations of political identity that has united African Americans for generations. African Americans’ political attitudes and behaviors have evolved due to their historical experiences with American Politics and American racism. Will Black newcomers recognize the inconsistencies between the American creed and American reality in the same way as those who have been in the U.S. for several generations? If so, how might this recognition influence Black immigrants’ political attitudes and behaviors? Will race be a site of coalition between Black immigrants and African Americans? In addition to face-to-face interviews with African Americans and Black immigrants, Smith employs nationally representative survey data to examine these shifts in the attitudes of Black Americans. Filling a significant gap in the political science literature to date, Black Mosaic is a groundbreaking study about the state of race, identity, and politics in an ever-changing America.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Passage of the Civil Service Reform Act was controversial, and there is still controversy over its effectiveness. A book of this sort will be well received and anxiously read by specialists in public administration, public policy, and public personnel administration."-H. George Frederickson, University of Kansas The Civil Service Reform Act of 1978 was the most far reaching reform of the federal government personnel system since the merit system was created in 1883. The Future of Merit reviews the aims and rates the accomplishments of the 1978 law and assesses the status of the civil service. How has it held up in the light of the National Performance Review? What will become of it in a globalizing international system or in a government that regards people as customers rather than citizens? Contributors examine the Senior Executive Service, whose members serve between presidential appointees and the rest of the civil service. These crucial executives must transform legislative and administrative goals into administrative reality, but are often caught between opposing pressures for change and continuity. In the concluding chapter Hugh Heclo, many of whose ideas informed the 1978 reform act, argues that the system today is often more responsive to the ambitions of political appointees and the presidents they serve than to the longer term needs of the polity. On the other hand, the ambition of creating a government-wide cadre of career general managers with highly developed leadership skills has not been fulfilled. Other contributors helped to frame the 1978 act, helped to implement it, or study it as scholars of public administration: Dwight Ink, Carolyn Ban, Joel D. Aberbach, Bert A. Rockman, Patricia W. Ingraham, Donald P. Moynihan, Hal G. Rainey, Ed Kellough, Barbara S. Romzek, Mark W. Huddleston, Chester A. Newland, and Hugh Heclo. Six former directors of the Office of Personnel Management commented on early versions of these chapters at a 1998 conference.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Sound Of Fear follows a pathway of the unthinkable. Is life as we know it truly a myth of hopeful expectation? The book, spread over a decade of time, entrances you with the love of a couple and their love of family, entwines you around the mysteries of the subconscious mind, enthralls you with depths of fear ignited by often heart-rendering episodes and embraces your simple need for pulling the bed covers over your eyes! Weak, strong, dirty, and heroic characters help you relate to human frailties. Inconceivable terror strikes you at times to find your core’s fear triggers. Take a deep breath as necessary! The simple fact is fear manifests deeply in all humans. Some hide the emotion with intrinsic capabilities of denial. Others blink and run on impulse! The storyline drifts around an alien tone. Subtle at times, you feel compelled to understand any life-form’s survival needs. But, the brutality of reality puts you back on the “home Team”, routing for the survival of the fittest! The Sound Of Fear experience finds you reminiscing those times when you looked into the wind-blown bushes at dusk to see the imaginary shadows or when you thought twice about going into the dark open waters of that expansive pond, lake or ocean. The book’s simple text finds you remembering the possibilities of how and why people cold be placed in situations just like one’s you’d heard about or had experienced. Within the chapters, you will relate to the characters’ sometimes reckless, sometimes concise, sometimes giddy, sometimes compassionate decisions or emotions. The book is purposefully designed to make you feel like you know what’s going to happen next…it at least gives you that “feeling” of control…or does it? Let your fear be your guide!

Book excerpt: How do researchers use dynamic network analysis (DYRA) to explore, model, and try to understand the complex global history of our species? Reduced to bare bones, network analysis is a way of understanding the world around us — a way called relational thinking — that is liberating but challenging. Using this handbook, researchers learn to develop historical and archaeological research questions anchored in DYRA. Undergraduate and graduate students, as well as professional historians and archaeologists can consult on issues that range from hypothesis-driven research to critiquing dominant historical narratives, especially those that have tended to ignore the diversity of the archaeological record.

Book excerpt: Rooster covers one year in the lives of two twelve year old boys, living in oak-wooded foothills along with Rooster's dog Flitter and seven pups. The story recounts the boys' battles with two persistent antagonists: a fierce old boar hog named Old Lop Ear, and a weird old recluse named Garvey Bockenweiler. The stories are a mixture of real life adventures of the two young boys, and fantastic constructs of one boy's fertile imagination. The recurring conflict with the ferocious hog and the cantankerous old man are resolved in ways that teach the young protagonist and his best friend strong lessons about life. The book ends with a powerful message as the young boys discover that the old man they feared can be turned into a friend. The book is targeted for eight to twelve year olds.
