Book excerpt: This is a collection of short stories about the travels of Emmet Waters, the younger brother of Gannon, as a series of continuous events. Emmet is an American businessman that travels extensively in Europe to train executives in global companies. As an American, he has all the excitement and naiveté that is bred into us. With the amount of traveling between continents, he takes on the title of the Mid-Atlantic man; living neither in America nor Europe. He also has the ability to learn about the complexities of the world and the ability and will to understand that creating and maintaining relationships is the most important objective in this life. All the characters in the stories do not exist except in Emmet's mind and the author's. The places are real, the events are fictitious and the names of people are close to being real, but not quite.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Are national legal cultures in Europe converging or diverging as a result of the pressures of European legal integration? Åse B. Grødeland and William L. Miller address this question by exploring the attitudes and perceptions of the general public and law professionals in five European countries: England, Norway, Bulgaria, Poland and the Ukraine. Presenting new findings, they challenge the established view that ordinary citizens and people working professionally with the law have different legal cultures. Their research in fact reveals that the attitudes of citizens in Eastern and Western Europe towards 'law-in-principle' are remarkably similar, whereas perceptions of 'law-in-practice' differ by country and often correlate with GDP per capita and country ranking in rule of law indices. Grødeland and Miller's innovative methodological approach will appeal to both experts and non-experts with an interest in legal culture, European integration, or European elite and public opinion.

Book excerpt: In the suspenseful thriller The Ring, The Bomb, and the Word, a home-grown terrorist group threatens to set off a nuclear bomb in Miami to prevent 10,000 same sex couples from marrying. Till death do us part has never sounded more prophetic! While the terrorists see their mission as a direct mandate from God, a group of Homeland Security agents try to foil their plot that makes 9/11 pale in comparison. As the wedding date draws near, the agents scramble to track down the bomb, as it makes its way from the former Soviet Union. Agent Chuck Chisolm has only seconds to find God, himself, and the courage to diffuse the bomb before Miami turns into radioactive dust. Here’s what readers are saying: “This book is a masterpiece.” “While reading the book, it makes you realize that no matter who you are, you still need the Divine One.” “I am thinking, who in Hollywood will be cast to play the characters?” “This book makes great reading because of how the author leads you through and builds your curiosity so you just want to know what happens next.”

Book excerpt: The Palgrave Handbook of European Migration in Literature and Culture engages with migration to, within, and from Europe, foregrounding migration through the lenses of historical migratory movement and flows associated with colonialism and postcolonialism. With essays on literature, film, drama, graphic novels, and more, the book addresses migration and media, hostile environments, migration and language, migration and literary experiment, migration as palimpsest, and figurations of the migrant. Each section is introduced by one of the handbook’s contributing editors and interviews with writers and film directors are integrated throughout the volume. The essays collected in the volume move beyond the discourse of the “refugee crisis” to trace the historical roots of the current migration situation through colonialism and decolonization.

Book excerpt: The mobile telecommunications industry is experiencing consider able growth at present and with the increased traffic capacities which these systems provide and falling equipment prices, it is expected to continue to grow throughout the 1990s. Projections of equipment costs indicate that even portable cellular handsets could come within the reach of many customers well before the end of the century. This will transform mobile communications services from a minority, high cost application into a mainstream telecommunications service. For both market and technical reasons it is likely that the distinction between cellular, Telepoint and paging services will decrease, and the provision of common hardware in the form of a Universal Personal Communicator will become increasingly feasible. 1987 Green Paper on The European Commission's June Telecommunications included the proposal to create a European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI). This has resulted in a major reform of the European standards-setting process with the establishment of ETSI in March 1988 in Sophia-Antipolis, Nice, France. In the field of cordless telecommunications, ETSI has charged its Technical Sub-Committee RES 3 with producing the Digital European Cordless Telecommunications (DECT) standard by October 1991. In the meantime, the UK CT2 Common Air Interface (CAl) has been agreed by ETSI RES in March 1990 as the basis for an Interim European Telecommuni cations Standard (I-ETS) for Telepoint applications within Europe.

Book excerpt: In this richly descriptive and haunting narrative, Caryl Phillips chronicles a journey through modern-day Europe, his quest guided by a moral compass rather than a map. Seeking personal definition within the parameters of growing up black in Europe, he discovers that the natural loneliness and confusion inherent in long jorneys collides with the bigotry of the "European Tribe"-a global community of whites caught up in an unyielding, Eurocentric history. Phillips deftly illustrates the scenes and characters he encounters, from Casablanca and Costa del Sol to Venice, Amsterdam, Oslo, and Moscow. He ultimately discovers that "Europe is blinded by her past, and does not understand the high price of her churches, art galleries, and history as the prison from which Europeans speak." In the afterword to the Vintage edition, Phillips revisits the Europe he knew as a young man and offers fresh observations.
