J. Copeland Iiathrop, Wm. Robinson and myself. Milton Lathrop, a most ami able and lovely young man, died of consumption before finishing his studies. Another, Wm. Robinson, entered the ministry but died young in Auburn New York. A young lady also, Miss Ame lia Newton, became a foreign missionary to the East Indias. The revival also gave a powerful impetus to the Temperance reform, and may be said to have inaugurated the great anti-slavery agitation which for thirty years shook the nation from center to circumfer ence, culminating in the emancipation of four million of African/ slaves. In the fall of 1833, at the age of 16, my father sent me to the Oneida Institute, located at \vhitesboro, four miles west of Utica New York, to commence a course of liberal study, with a possible view to the Gospel ministry. The Oneida Institute was in many respects a remarkable Insti tution of learning. As I havealready said, it was an outgrowth Of the great revivals of 1831, the most Of its leading students being converts of that revival, and burning with zeal and enthusiasm to enter the ministry. It was thus pre-eminently a christian insti tution. It struck out a new course Of study substituting the orig inal Hebrew and Greek, the Bible itself, the great immortal class ic, the writings of such authors as David, the sweet Psalmist Of Is rael, Of Solomon, the wisest Of men, Of Isaiah, whose writings for elegance, beauty and sublimity have never been excelled in ancient or modern times, Of John and Paul and of Jesus Christ himself, for the corrupt works of Latin and Greek heathen authors, whose writ ings need to be revised and many parts expunged, to fit them for the eyes of pure and virtuous readers. M'ginnes, of Shade Gap, Pa Books live, when those who wrote them are dead. A good book, like a true Christian, is of inestimable worth. They are both sentinels for truth - for God. They are both "epistles," the one "living" the other "written," and each may be read of all men "to the praise of the glory of God's grace." The more, therefore, both are multiplied the better; they will have not only their day, but their healthful influence. The following unpretending sketch has been prepared, because the author, with many others, felt that everything relating to one who was so universally beloved, and so useful in his "day and generation," ought not to be lost to the Church and the world - that although comparatively young and unknown when he died, his noble traits of character, and his labors in behalf both of education and religion, seemed to demand an extended notice. In the attempt, the author has been encouraged at every step by the special providence of God, and by the best wishes of not a few in regard to the enterprise. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Memoirs of the Life, Character, and Writings, of the Late Reverend Philip Doddridge, D. D Biography, when properly executed, is a species of history peculiarly engaging and instructive. Christian biography, in particular, exercises a beneficial moral influence, by exhibiting the principles, deportment, and habits of the disciples of Christ. To display Whatever was excellent in those who are gone, for the imitation of the living, is sanctioned by the authority of Scripture. The word of God is full of biographical notices. There is not a temper, disposition, or ac tion, required in Scripture that is not palpably exhi bited in the history of one or other of the faithful. They are not merely described - they are seen as it were alive and in exercise. There is much wisdom discovered in this; for such is our nature, that truth' must assume the garb of character in order perma nently to interest. Those who cannot retain any ab stract statement-may receive instruction in the form of narrative. 'the truth is thus taught by its being exemplified. We feel at once reproved, stimulated. Payson When comes the hour, which now I may not know, When from this changing world my soul must go, Will my life's plans be broken? Truly, no. God placed me here I chose not place or name, To do his work, his business, be my aim, Through every day, in all the plans I frame. My one great aim in which all others blend, To which my work, my pleasures, pastimes tend, Be to fill well the time my God may send. Then when he calls, wherever I may be, Doing the common work he gives to me, At books, or prayer, abroad, on land or sea, My soul will not be stricken with dismay; A home and treasure have I far away, Whither my Lord will guide me on that day. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Life and Times of James B. Taylor It is stated by booksellers that in the present age biographies are overlooked and neglected. Well-written lives of great, good, and distinguished men encumber the shelves of publishers, while works of fiction, and indeed most other kinds of books, find a ready sale. If this statement is true - as doubtless it is - the fact is unfortunate for the age. History, it is said, is philosophy teaching by example. If this saying is true of history, it is specially true of biography. This presents, in a clear light, the results of the various principal motives and influences which give impulse to human life and guide its course. We are taught the value of this species of composition by the Bible. It is composed largely of the biographies, not formal and full, but fragmentary and graphic, both of good and of bad men. The four evangelists have furnished us biographies of the most wonderful Being whose dwelling has been on earth, and in a style of inimitable simplicity, faithfulness, and beauty. It would not be possible for didactic writing, however wise and authoritative, to impart such a charm and power to holiness as it has in the simple biography of Jesus of Nazareth. If the world has lost its taste for biography, this fact is a sad proof that its taste is vitiated, and the friends of a healthful literature should labor to correct the evil. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life of Rev. John Clark Christian biography is as much more important than that of ineligious people, as the interests of eternity are greater than those Of time. In this brief state Of probation alone we may prepare for the felicity which awaits the faithful in the coming life. And while we are to regard the Bible as our consti tutional directory, and Christ as our only hope, it becomes us to understand how others, going before us, learned to practice the former, and embrace and trust in the latter unto final salvation. How suitable and profitable it is for us to ascertain correctly how the excellent Of the earth found the way of life in Christ, followed it to the end, and Obtained the in heritance Of the saints in light; and then endeavor to imitate their example, that we may share in the promised reward above. Then let us avail ourselves of Christian biography, both sacred and inspired, as a valuable mode Of instruction. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life and Writings of Rev. Joseph Gordon: Written and Compiled by a Committee of the Free Presbyterian Synod Rev. Joseph gordon was one of a few ministers, who uni ted and formed the Free Presbyterian Church, in 1847. In the midst of prevailing declension and Hunkerism, they came out from their ecclesiastical connections, with a manifesto of principles adverse to the popular religion of the day and on these they based the new organization. During seven years he was the editor of the Free Presbyterian - the organ of the new formed church. After his death, the Free Synod at its next meeting held in Ripley, O., in October 1858, appointed a committee of two persons to write a biography of the deceased and compile a selection from his writings, and have them pub lished. Of this committee, Rev. T. M. Finney, of Martins burg, was one. The other member expected him to write the biography, and aid in selecting from the writings of the de ceased. After a lingering sickness of some four months, Mr. Finney died on the 20th of July, 1859, without having begun the work. Amid a pressure of other duties the surviving member of the committee was compelled to dispatch the mat ter in a short time, and without the advantage that even his limited share of ability might have given it, with more leisure and attention. This statement extends to the biography, the selections and the arrangement, but of course not to the writ ings of the deceased. If, however, the humble efi'ort helps to preserve the memory Of one exceedingly dear to him, and in any good degree promotes the cause of truth, and righteous ness, and church reform, he will be thankful and satisfied. Haddock The death of a clergyman while engaged in maintaining a great reform, and under circumstances of the deepest atrocity, will vindicate the narration of his history. Especially is this true in the present case. But no life is valuable disconnected from valuable work. For these reasons, as well as from a desire to honor the memory of a man who was father, friend, and hero in one, and, if possible, to project his influence beyond his death, I have spoken with his words at every opportunity, and kept steadily in view the one subject of Prohibition. The work of the pastor has been sacrificed to the work of the temperance advocate. In endeavoring to portray the man growing up into the reformer, chronology has been subordinated to history, and at the last this has naturally developed into a single appeal to law. If this book shall add anything to the cause for which he died, its writing will have been amply justified.
