Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Traces the development of African-American community traditions over three centuries From the subaltern assemblies of the enslaved in colonial New York City to the benevolent New York African Society of the early national era to the formation of the African Blood Brotherhood in twentieth century Harlem, voluntary associations have been a fixture of African-American communities. In the Company of Black Men examines New York City over three centuries to show that enslaved Africans provided the institutional foundation upon which African-American religious, political, and social culture could flourish. Arguing that the universality of the voluntary tradition in African-American communities has its basis in collectivism—a behavioral and rhetorical tendency to privilege the group over the individual—it explores the institutions that arose as enslaved Africans exploited the potential for group action and mass resistance. Craig Steven Wilder’s research is particularly exciting in its assertion that Africans entered the Americas equipped with intellectual traditions and sociological models that facilitated a communitarian response to oppression. Presenting a dramatic shift from previous work which has viewed African-American male associations as derivative and imitative of white male counterparts, In the Company of Black Men provides a ground-breaking template for investigating antebellum black institutions.

Download or read book Fordham written by Thomas J. Shelley and published by Fordham Univ Press. This book was released on 2016-06-01 with total page 884 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “A detailed institutional history that charts both triumphs and setbacks.” —Catholic Herald Based largely on archival sources in the United States and Rome, this book documents the evolution of Fordham from a small diocesan commuter college into a major American Jesuit and Catholic university with an enrollment of more than 15,000 students from sixty-five countries. This is honest history that gives due credit to Fordham for its many academic achievements, but also recognizes that Fordham shared the shortcomings of many Catholic colleges in the United States in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Covering struggles over curriculum and the change of ownership in recent decades from the Society of Jesus to a predominantly lay board of trustees, this book addresses the intensifying challenges of offering a first-rate education while maintaining Fordham’s Catholic and Jesuit identity. Exploring more than a century and a half of Fordham’s past, this comprehensive history of a beloved and renowned New York City institution of higher learning also contributes to our debates about the future of education.
