Book Synopsis Shipping Economics by : Kevin Cullinane
Download or read book Shipping Economics written by Kevin Cullinane and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2005-06-15 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shipping is by far the most significant mode of transportation for the carriage of freight. In terms of volume alone, no other mode comes close. Its dominance is even more overwhelming when distances are accounted for. This book is concerned with the economics of this pivotal mode of transportation. It reveals that the influences on the development and current state of shipping economics research are extremely eclectic. The various chapters in the book represent areas that are of central concern to ongoing research in the field. As such, the book is useful to students, researchers, industrialists, policy makers and consultants. The authors of the contributed chapters are some of the leading names in the world of shipping economics, addressing a number of diverse areas: The econometric modeling of shipping markets; Shipping finance (a critical issue in such a capital intensive industry); Fiscal policy (and its impact on an international industry with great asset mobility) and Safety and security (aspects that have risen to prominence with increasing concerns over the environment and international terrorism). Ultimately, while shipping as a business depends upon trade, it is absolutely certain that the business of trade depends upon shipping. The final two chapters, therefore, incorporate aspects of network economics, welfare economics and international trade theory to analyze where and how shipping sits within the wider perspective of industrial supply chains.Professor Kevin Cullinane, BA BSc MSc PhD FCILT CNIProfessor Kevin Cullinane is Chair in Marine Transport and Management at the University of Newcastle in the U.K. He was previously Professor and Head of the Department of Shipping and Transport Logistics at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University, Head of the Centre for International Shipping and Transport at Plymouth University, Senior Partner in his own transport consultancy company and Research Fellow at the University of Oxford Transport Studies Unit. Book Synopsis Whose National Security? by : Gary Kinsman
Download or read book Whose National Security? written by Gary Kinsman and published by Between the Lines. This book was released on 2000-10-01 with total page 403 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Would you believe that RCMP operatives used to spy on Tupperware parties? In the 1950s and ’60s they did. They also monitored high school students, gays and lesbians, trade unionists, left-wing political groups, feminists, consumer’s associations, Black activists, First Nations people, and Quebec sovereigntists. The establishment of a tenacious Canadian security state came as no accident. On the contrary, the highest levels of government and the police, along with non-governmental interests and institutions, were involved in a concerted campaign. The security state grouped ordinary Canadians into dozens of political stereotypes and labelled them as threats. Whose National Security? probes the security state’s ideologies and hidden agendas, and sheds light on threats to democracy that persist to the present day. The contributors’ varied approaches open up avenues for reconceptualizing the nature of spying.
Book Synopsis Sea Has Many Voices by : Cynthia Lamson
Download or read book Sea Has Many Voices written by Cynthia Lamson and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 1994-03-22 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Each chapter describes the dynamics or tensions within a specific marine sector or policy community. Collectively, the contributors raise critical questions about the process, structure, and function of Canadian oceans policy, covering topics such as the Atlantic fishery, conservation, ocean science and technology, shipping, aboriginal rights, defence, and pollution. The book conveys a cautiously optimistic message: although Canada does not yet have a comprehensive oceans policy, there is growing evidence that the problem, policy, and political streams are converging. Canada must be ready to respond to this policy opportunity with clear objectives and appropriate program elements that mediate between competing interests and conflicting values. Those who construct Canada's oceans policy must be capable of calculating risks and challenging the status quo to create a workable, sustainable framework for oceans governance in our increasingly complex world. The contributors to this collection are Robert Boardman, Darlene Boyle, Mark Butler, Scott F. Coffen, Raymond P. Côté, Graham Day, Lloyd M. Dickie, Gaye Drescher, Wade Elliot, Terry Fenge, Julia Gardner, Robert Gorham, Cynthia Lamson, Josée M. Parent, Randall Prime, Barbara Riley, Timothy A. Smith, John Somers, and Jeffrey L.C. Wright.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From its eighteenth-century roots in exploration and trade, to the major conflicts of the First and Second World Wars, through to current roles in multinational operations with United Nations and NATO forces, Canada's navy – now celebrating its one hundredth anniversary – has been an expression of Canadian nationhood and a catalyst in the complex process of national unity. In the second edition of Canada’s Navy, Marc Milner brings his classic work up to date and looks back at one hundred years of the navy in Canada. With supplementary photographs, updated sources, a new preface and epilogue, and an additional chapter on the navy’s global reach from 1991 to 2010, this edition carries Canadian naval history into the twenty-first century. Milner brings effortless prose and exacting detail to discussions about topics as diverse as Arctic sovereignty, fishing wars, and international piracy. Comprehensive and accessible, Canada’s Navy will continue to provoke discussion about the past and future of the country’s naval forces and their evolving role in the interwoven issues of maritime politics and economics, defence and strategy, and national and foreign policy.
