Book excerpt: In 1820, a young farm boy in search of truth has a vision of God the Father and Jesus Christ. Three years later, an angel guides him to an ancient record buried in a hill near his home. With God’s help, he translates the record and organizes the Savior’s church in the latter days. Soon others join him, accepting the invitation to become Saints through the Atonement of Jesus Christ. But opposition and violence follow those who defy old traditions to embrace restored truths. The women and men who join the church must choose whether or not they will stay true to their covenants, establish Zion, and proclaim the gospel to a troubled world. The Standard of Truth is the first book in Saints, a new, four-volume narrative history of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Fast-paced, meticulously researched, Saints recounts true stories of Latter-day Saints across the globe and answers the Lord’s call to write history “for the good of the church, and for the rising generations” (Doctrine and Covenants 69:8).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The inability of American society to tolerate the peculiar institutions embraced by Mormons was one of the major events in the religious history of nineteenth-century America. Zion in the Courts explores one aspect of this collision between the Mormons and the mainstream: the Mormons' efforts to establish their own court system--one appropriate to the distinctive political, social, and economic practices they envisioned as Zion--and the pressures applied by the federal legal system to bring them to heel. This first paperback edition includes two new introductory pieces in which the authors discuss the Mormon emphasis on settling disputes outside the court, a practice that foreshadows current trends toward arbitration and mediation.

Book excerpt: The History of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is also the history of the opening and progress of the Dispensation of the fullness of Times; and as that dispensation bears an important relation to all dispensations which have preceded it, let us here ascertain in what that relation consists. By doing so we shall have a better appreciation of the full import of those events which make up the history of the Church. In publishing the History of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, it is felt that a solemn duty is being performed to the Saints and to the world. The events which make up the history of the Church in this age are the most important that history can chronicle. It is due therefore both to the Saints themselves and to the world that a faithful and complete history of the facts in which the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints had its origin, together with the events through which it was subsequently developed, and all the circumstances, experiences and trials through which it passed be made known to mankind. Elder B. H. Roberts consulted diaries, printed sources, and remembrances of Church members to prepare a history of the Church that centered mainly on the life of Joseph Smith. Before it was published, Elder Anthon H. Lund and President Joseph F. Smith read and approved the work. The resulting seven volumes, over forty-five hundred pages, known as the History of the Church has since become a great resource to Church members and historians alike.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Brief History of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints: From the Birth of the Prophet Joseph Smith to the Present Time The following pages contain a brief history of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. In order that the reader may obtain a clear understanding of the principles of the gospel, in connection with the history of the people who have been instrumental in establishing it, references have been made freely to the Book of Doctrine and Covenants containing the revelations of the Prophet Joseph Smith for the building up of the Kingdom of God in the last days. In conjunction with his own experience, the author has gathered his facts, in sketching these main outlines of the faith, work, travels and persecutions of the Saints, from a large number of reliable authorities on the subject. Accuracy has been aimed at, as well as completeness as far as the limited space would allow. The volume is designed, first, to create an interest in the marvelous work of God, as exemplified in and through the Mormons, in the minds of the youth of Israel, to whom a knowledge of the faith, toils and sacrifices of the founders of this great, latter-day religious fabric is absolutely indispensable. Secondly, there is a large class of persons who desire a glimpse of the story of Mormonism, but who have no time to read the more ponderous books thereon; such, it is believed, will find just what they need in these pages.
