Book Synopsis A Bose-Einstein Condensate Coupled to a Micromechanical Oscillator by : David Hunger
Download or read book A Bose-Einstein Condensate Coupled to a Micromechanical Oscillator written by David Hunger and published by Sudwestdeutscher Verlag Fur Hochschulschriften AG. This book was released on 2010 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ultracold neutral atoms can be trapped and coherently manipulated close to a surface using chip-based magnetic microtraps. This opens the possibility of studying interactions between atoms and on-chip solid-state systems such as micro- and nanostructured mechanical oscillators. This thesis reports experiments, where a controlled coupling between a Bose-Einstein condensate and a micromechanical oscillator is realized for the first time. The interaction relies on surface forces experienced by the atoms trapped at about 1 micrometer distance from the mechanical structure. The surface forces are used to resonantly couple the mechanical motion of the oscillator to collective motion of the atoms. Coupling via surface forces does not require magnets, electrodes, or mirrors on the oscillator and could thus be employed to couple atoms to molecular-scale oscillators such as carbon nanotubes. In the long-term, the toolbox for quantum manipulation of ultracold atoms could be employed to read out, cool, and coherently manipulate the quantum state of a mechanical oscillator. The thesis discusses three different scenarios that could enable atom-oscillator coupling at the quantum level.
Book Synopsis Quantum Optomechanics and Nanomechanics by : Pierre-Francois Cohadon

This book was released on 2020-02-20 with total page 475 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Les Houches Summer School in August 2015 covered the emerging fields of cavity optomechanics and quantum nanomechanics. Optomechanics is flourishing and its concepts and techniques are now applied to a wide range of topics. Modern quantum optomechanics was born in the late 1970s in the framework of gravitational wave interferometry, with an initial focus on the quantum limits of displacement measurements. Carlton Caves, Vladimir Braginsky, and others realized that the sensitivity of the anticipated large-scale gravitational-wave interferometers (GWI) was fundamentally limited by the quantum fluctuations of the measurement laser beam. After tremendous experimental progress, the sensitivity of the upcoming next generation of GWI will effectively be limited by quantum noise. In this way, quantum-optomechanical effects will directly affect the operation of what is arguably the world's most impressive precision experiment. However, optomechanics has also gained a life of its own with a focus on the quantum aspects of moving mirrors. Laser light can be used to cool mechanical resonators well below the temperature of its environment. After proof-of-principle demonstrations of this cooling in 2006, a number of systems were used as the field gradually merged with its condensed matter cousin (nanomechanical systems) to try to reach the mechanical quantum ground state, eventually demonstrated in 2010 by pure cryogenic techniques and just one year later by a combination of cryogenic and radiation-pressure cooling. The book covers all aspects -- historical, theoretical, experimental -- of the field, with its applications to quantum measurement, foundations of quantum mechanics and quantum information. It is an essential read for any new researcher in the field.

Book Synopsis Bose–Einstein Condensation in Dilute Gases by : C. J. Pethick
Download or read book Bose–Einstein Condensation in Dilute Gases written by C. J. Pethick and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2008-09-11 with total page 538 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since an atomic Bose-Einstein condensate, predicted by Einstein in 1925, was first produced in the laboratory in 1995, the study of ultracold Bose and Fermi gases has become one of the most active areas in contemporary physics. This book explains phenomena in ultracold gases from basic principles, without assuming a detailed knowledge of atomic, condensed matter, and nuclear physics. This new edition has been revised and updated, and includes new chapters on optical lattices, low dimensions, and strongly-interacting Fermi systems. This book provides a unified introduction to the physics of ultracold atomic Bose and Fermi gases for advanced undergraduate and graduate students, as well as experimentalists and theorists. Chapters cover the statistical physics of trapped gases, atomic properties, cooling and trapping atoms, interatomic interactions, structure of trapped condensates, collective modes, rotating condensates, superfluidity, interference phenomena, and trapped Fermi gases. Problems are included at the end of each chapter.
Book Synopsis Bose-Einstein Condensation by : Keith Burnett (Ed); Mark Edwar
Download or read book Bose-Einstein Condensation written by Keith Burnett (Ed); Mark Edwar and published by DIANE Publishing. This book was released on 1996-12 with total page 213 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Among the most remarkable effects that quantum mechanics adds to the catalog of the thermal properties of matter is "condensation" of an ideal gas of identical particles into a single quantum state, the principle of which was discovered in the theory of statistical mechanics by Bose and Einstein in the 1920s. Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) is a mechanism for producing a macroscopic quantum system, and is exemplary of the macroscopic quantum phenomena of superconductivity and superfluidity. These 15 papers provide an introduction to current work on BEC.
Download or read book Quantum Optics written by Pierre Meystre and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-07-24 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a thoroughly modern and highly pedagogical graduate-level introduction to quantum optics, a subject which has witnessed stunning developments in recent years and has come to occupy a central role in the 'second quantum revolution'. The reader is invited to explore the fundamental role that quantum optics plays in the control and manipulation of quantum systems, leading to ultracold atoms, circuit QED, quantum information science, quantum optomechanics, and quantum metrology. The building blocks of the subject are presented in a sequential fashion, starting from the simplest physical situations before moving to increasingly complicated ones. This pedagogically appealing approach leads to quantum entanglement and measurement theory being introduced early on and before more specialized topics such as cavity QED or laser cooling. The final chapter illustrates the power of scientific cross-fertilization by surveying cutting-edge applications of quantum optics and optomechanics in gravitational wave detection, tests of fundamental physics, searches for dark matter, geophysical monitoring, and ultraprecise clocks. Complete with worked examples and exercises, this book provides the reader with enough background knowledge and understanding to follow the current journal literature and begin producing their own original research.

Download or read book Bose-Einstein Condensation of Excitons and Biexcitons written by Svi︠a︡toslav Anatolʹevich Moskalenko and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2000-02-28 with total page 434 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bose-Einstein condensation of excitons is a unique effect in which the electronic states of a solid can self-organize to acquire quantum phase coherence. The phenomenon is closely linked to Bose-Einstein condensation in other systems such as liquid helium and laser-cooled atomic gases. This is the first book to provide a comprehensive survey of this field, covering theoretical aspects as well as recent experimental work. After setting out the relevant basic physics of excitons, the authors discuss exciton-phonon interactions as well as the behaviour of biexcitons. They cover exciton phase transitions and give particular attention to nonlinear optical effects including the optical Stark effect and chaos in excitonic systems. The thermodynamics of equilibrium, quasi-equilibrium, and nonequilibrium systems are examined in detail. The authors interweave theoretical and experimental results throughout the book, and it will be of great interest to graduate students and researchers in semiconductor and superconductor physics, quantum optics, and atomic physics.
