"She had Quaker breeding," and although of a proverbially "fierce race "--the Shewells--she was meek, kindly, and Christian; and from her, no doubt, the poet derived much of the gentle urbanity and generous sympathy that were essential features in his character. To her, also, he traces a "constitutional timidity " that " often perplexed him through life;" it is not so much seen in his books as it was in his conversation and conduct. This characteristic was noticed by many, who wondered that so " mild " a person should have embarked on the stormy sea of politics, and have become a fierce partisan of the pen.
