Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Shrine of Silence: A Book of Meditations What then could afford a more delightful surprise than to find the book instantly called for, and three editions in two years required to satisfy the demand. Those who scan these pages for discursive trea tises, for long drawn out contemplations or argu ments, will surely be disappointed. The author has but one object in presenting these writings to the world. That object is to strive to arouse a thoughtful mood in the reader, coupled with an immediate awakening of the higher spiritual forces of his nature. To some the thoughts may seem to be radical disruptive, disorganizing, iconoclastic. But not if they read the spirit of the author into the lines. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Lost Art of Meditation Haste and worry are anything but helpful to that purest devotion and loftiest thought which are essential in the making of char acter. He who sees God's mountains from the window of the speeding express train, or from the thronging streets of mountain cities, will never see their real glory. One must stand alone in the vast solitudes surrounded by snow-capped giants and let the mountains grow on him to experience the soul touch of majesty. And he who would know God must be much alone with God. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Download or read book Centuries of Meditations (Classic Reprint) written by Thomas Traherne and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-19 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Centuries of Meditations I have named, I cannot doubt that with the publi cation of the present volume all question as to his claim to rank with them in force Of intellect and power Of expression must be finally set at rest. When I published the Poems I prefixed to them an introduction in which I gave all the facts about the author's life and works which I had then been able to discover. I need not travel again over this ground, since most of my present readers will have seen the previous volume. What I said in that preface I do not now see any reason to modify or withdraw. About the present work there is much to be said: and I at first intended to attempt to say all that needed saying. But after some endeavour to do this, I came to see that w1th all my admiration for Traherne as a literary artist, I was so far out of sympathy with many Of his ideas that I could not deal with them from the proper standpoint without exposing myself to some risk of misapprehension. Though it is certainly not necessary that any one who writes about Traherne should believe all that he did, it is yet desirable that he should be generally in sympathy with the faith Of which our author was so earnest a professor. For myself then all I now propose to do is, firstly, to make some remarks on the characteristics Of Traherne as a man and an author; and secondly, to endeavour to bring out, by comparison with the most famous work of the same kind, the peculiar merits Of his Centuries Of Meditations. Book Synopsis Meditations : ANNOTATED by : Marcus Aurelius
Download or read book Meditations : ANNOTATED written by Marcus Aurelius and published by . This book was released on 2019-10-23 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Meditations (Medieval Greek: Τὰ εἰς ἑαυτόν, romanized: Ta eis heauton, literally "things to one's self") is a series of personal writings by Marcus Aurelius, Roman Emperor from 161 to 180 AD, recording his private notes to himself and ideas on Stoic philosophy. Marcus Aurelius wrote the 12 books of the Meditations in Koine Greek as a source for his own guidance and self-improvement. It is possible that large portions of the work were written at Sirmium, where he spent much time planning military campaigns from 170 to 180. Some of it was written while he was positioned at Aquincum on campaign in Pannonia, because internal notes tell us that the first book was written when he was campaigning against the Quadi on the river Granova (modern-day Hron) and the second book was written at Carnuntum. It is unlikely that Marcus Aurelius ever intended the writings to be published and the work has no official title, so "Meditations" is one of several titles commonly assigned to the collection. These writings take the form of quotations varying in length from one sentence to long paragraphs.

He ranges through the works of nature and the pages of history, to collect useful information, to charm the juvenile reader; to lead him insensibly to high and heavenly things. His language, like his imagination, was rich andiu Xuriant; like a well cultivated garden in summer. It was profuse in flowers and fragrance. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Study of Meditation I have nevertheless assumed that the reader is in the attitude Of a beginner, and can only hope that I have not taken too great a liberty in approaching spiritual considera tions in the simplest possible fashion. One very grave difficulty has been especially kept in View. The beginner is naturally impatient to improve, and in most aids to meditation he is tempted to practise more at one time than he can profitably manage. The chapters here, therefore, have been divided into short devotional readings, each Of which is to some degree complete in itself, and can be made the subject Of one or more meditations. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Thirsting for the Springs: Twenty-Six Weeknight Meditations The addresses in this volume were all origin ally published in the Examiner newspaper, and it was not intended by Mr Jowett, that they should ever take more permanent form. They were found, however, to be so helpful and stimulating by a wide circle of readers, and so many requests for their republication were re ceived, that it has been resolved to issue them in the present volume, with the h0pe that they may appeal for good to a still larger public. As they retain the form of spoken rather than written addresses, it is only due to the author that this much should be stated. Download or read book Upper Room Meditations (Classic Reprint) written by O. P. Fitzgerald and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-09-28 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Upper Room Meditations IN the opening verses of the Bible there is an in timation of the sublime truth that everything in the universe of God, both physical and spiritual, is under law. In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth. And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters. When the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters, then came life and light, order and beauty. From the revolutions of a planetary system to the fall of a sparrow there is nothing capricious or arbitrary or fortuitous in the divine administration. This truth is the key that will unlock many mysteries in our study of God's ways in his dealings with us as revealed in his Word and known by our experience. In the chapters that follow it is hoped that the kind ly reader will discern this truth as a golden thread running through the whole. And we will not forget that the Spirit of God is his own best interpreter. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Invitations of Our Lord: Notes of Meditations These Outlines of Meditations are published in response to what seems a real demand for such books. I am asked from time to time to recom mend books of outlines, and have found that the number of such books prepared for the use of the laity is very limited. I hope therefore that I am offering a book that will be useful, and in offering it I have no ambition beyond that. It is prepared on the basis of notes that have been tested in parish and retreat work and have been found not unacceptable. I have aimed at some thing between a fully worked out meditation and a bald'outline, because that seems 'to me to be what many want. I have worked out the pre ludes fully for no other reason than that I found it interesting to do. I have prefixed at my pub.
