Book excerpt: When it comes to marriage these days, anything goes. No wonder you can find a book on marriage from every perspective--or no perspective. How can you experience a great marriage that lasts? What works? This book answers that question by shining a light on the biblical design for marriage. In a world of sexual and relational confusion, isn't it time to consult the One who created marriage? Author and pastor Chip Ingram, with his characteristic compassion, transparency, and engaging storytelling, discusses - what marriage really is - the biblical model - a man's unique role in marriage - a woman's unique role in marriage - the bigger picture of why God created marriage A marriage that works, says Ingram, is more wonderful than you thought possible and harder than you imagined--but worth the work. Couples will learn the power of making a covenant with their spouse and fulfilling their design in an atmosphere of respect, resulting in the spiritual, psychological, emotional, and physical oneness they long to have with each other.

We, Lamont and Melissa Simmons, have been married twenty-four years, and we have three children. We started out in marriage knowing nothing and making a mess out of everything. After a few couples helped mentor and counsel us, we were able to turn things around in our marriage. So we "pay it forward" by starting and heading up And2 Marriage Ministry. It is geared towards being intimate, honest, and open, and allowing God to reveal the secret places in our marriages that need healing and growth.

Book excerpt: Marriage H. G. Wells - Happy is good. Holy is better.Your marriage is in excess of a sacrosanct pledge with someone else. It is an otherworldly discipline intended to assist you with knowing God better, trust him all the more completely, and love him all the more profoundly. Consider the possibility that God's essential expectation for your marriage isn't to fulfill you . . . yet, heavenly?Sacrosanct Marriage doesn't simply offer procedures to make a marriage more joyful. It contains reasonable devices, yet what wedded Christians most need is help in becoming holier married couples. Consecrated Marriage offers that assistance with bits of knowledge from Scripture, church history, dependable insight from Christian works of art, and models from the present relationships.Sacrosanct Marriage uncovers how marriage trains us to adore God and others well, how it uncovered sin and makes us more mindful of God's essence, how acceptable relationships encourage great supplication, how hitched sex takes care of the profound life, and then some. The reexamined release of Sacred Marriage considers the ways people's jobs have extended since the book was first composed. It has been smoothed out to be a quicker perused without losing the profundity that such countless perusers have esteemed.Holy Marriage uncovers the secret of God's general reason. This book might just adjust significantly the shapes of your marriage. It will unquestionably transform you. Since whether it is wonderful or troublesome, your marriage can turn into an entryway to a nearer walk with God, and to an otherworldly trustworthiness that, similar to salt, seasons your general surroundings with the relish of Christ. And was originally published in 1912.Herbert George Wells was born on September 21st, 1866 at Atlas House, 46 High Street, Bromley, Kent. He was the youngest of four siblings and his family affectionately knew him as Bertie. The first few years of his childhood were spent fairly quietly, and Wells didnt display much literary interest until, in 1874, he accidentally broke his leg and was left to recover in bed, largely entertained by the library books his father regularly brought him. Through these Wells found he could escape the boredom and misery of his bed and convalescence by exploring the new worlds he encountered in these books. From these humble beginnings began a career that was, after several delays, to be seen as one of the most brilliant of modern English writers. Able to write comfortably in a number of genres he was especially applauded for his science fiction works such as The Time Machine and War of the Worlds but his forays into the social conditions of the times, with classics such as Kipps, were almost as commercially successful. His short stories are miniature masterpieces many of which bring new and incredible ideas of science fiction to the edge of present day science fact. Wells also received four nominations for the Nobel Prize in Literature. Despite a strong and lasting second marriage his affairs with other women also brought the complications of fathering other children. His writings and work against fascism, as well as the promotion of socialism, brought him into increasing doubts with and opposition to religion. His writings on what the world could be in works, such as A Modern Utopia, are thought provoking as well as being plausible, especially when viewed from the distressing times they were written in. His diabetic condition pushed him to create what is now the largest Diabetes charity in the United Kingdom. Wells even found the time to run twice for Parliament. It was a long, distinguished and powerfully successful career by the time he died, aged 79, on August 13th, 1946.

Book excerpt: "The reason why so few marriages are happy is because young women spend their time in making nets, not in making cages." Like government, marriage must be a series of compromises; and however warm the love of both parties may be, it will very soon cool unless they learn the golden rule of married life, "To bear and to forbear." In matrimony, as in so many other things, a good beginning is half the battle. But how easily may good beginnings be frustrated through infirmity of temper and other causes, and then we must "tread those steps with sorrow which we might have trod with joy." No knowledge is so well worth acquiring as the science of living harmoniously for the most part of a life with another, which we might take as a definition of matrimony. This science teaches us to avoid fault-finding, bothering, boring, and other tormenting habits. "These are only trifling faults," you say. Yes, but trifles produce domestic misery, and domestic misery is no trifle. "We strongly recommend this book as one of the best of wedding presents. It is a complete handbook to an earthly Paradise, and its author may be regarded as the Murray of Matrimony and the Baedeker of Bliss."--Pall Mall Gazette. "The author has successfully accomplished a difficult task in writing a clever and practical book on the important subject of matrimony.... This book, which is at once entertaining and full of wise precepts, deserves to be widely read."--Morning Post. "An entertaining volume.... The new guide to matrimonial felicity."--Standard, Leader. "A clever, readable, and entertaining book.... This delicious book."--Literary Churchman. "This most elucidatory treatise.... As a 'companion to the honeymoon,' this orange blossom, true-love-knot ornamented volume should no doubt be highly esteemed."--Whitehall Review. "The book is tastefully got up, and its contents adapt it very well for a present to a young bride."--Queen. "One of the cleverest, best written books on the subject we have read at any time. To girls contemplating marriage, the volume should be presented as a wedding gift.... Grave and gay, but never for a moment dull or tiresome. Each page sparkles with anecdote or suggestive illustration."--Ladies' Treasury. "A highly ornamental yet handy, well printed, and admirably written volume."--The Lady. "A rich store of entertaining anecdote, and full of thoughts beautiful, pious, and wise. Has a tasteful binding."--Bookseller.

Book excerpt: Just when the clamor over "traditional" marriage couldn’t get any louder, along comes this groundbreaking book to ask, "What tradition?" In Marriage, a History, historian and marriage expert Stephanie Coontz takes readers from the marital intrigues of ancient Babylon to the torments of Victorian lovers to demonstrate how recent the idea of marrying for love is—and how absurd it would have seemed to most of our ancestors. It was when marriage moved into the emotional sphere in the nineteenth century, she argues, that it suffered as an institution just as it began to thrive as a personal relationship. This enlightening and hugely entertaining book brings intelligence, perspective, and wit to today’s marital debate.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: All marriage relationships to one degree or another have strife. Most of the time they are hidden, masked, or just not shared with our mate, the one person who matters the most, what has happened? This book is scripturally based on what I believe God has shown me over our many years of marriage (45,) and our counseling experience. How His word is to be applied to the marriage relationship in the various areas husbands and wives find themselves, including the children, the extended families and our own personal and business lifestyle. My hope is to give those struggling, hope! And some tools that can help them overcome whatever the circumstance (problem) is. The biggest tool of course is God, and how much we will allow Him to touch our heart. Hopefully, we will come to the realization we are to conform to His way and not Him to ours. I do believe the problem is not the marriage that needs to be worked on, but the husband and wife that must work out their individual issues (baggage prior to marriage) with counselors, through learned communication and other materials. Are you willing to change?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This twelve week study shows how the historic understanding of Covenant helps us build a love-for-a-lifetime Marriage. Marriage is not what our culture—or we— say it is. What is the one flesh relationship that was designed by God?

When two enter a Covenant, the identity of each party enters the other. This produces a bond of shared identity between the two and alters the nature of each—“what God has joined together.” God’s instructions are logical consequences of these realities. We love the other as we love ourselves because the other is now part of us. Our hearts want to love, but we do not love consistently. Why? Because our guidance systemour old sense of self-interest—pulls in other directions.

Covenant is not just a tie that binds. It is also a plan that teaches us what to do, why we do these things, and how we become able to do them. Our married self is a new self. Obedience does not oppose our nature; it authentically expresses our new self and new bond. Shifting our guidance system to follow God’s plan and building this new life is the path to the best Marriage.

Book excerpt: "Without intention, we find ourselves being tossed from one crisis to another without any plan to correct our course...Love is a choice and so our greatest joy comes from intentionally loving another person. The misconception is that when we bring two people together under the umbrella of marriage, it becomes a beautiful thing all by itself. There is no such thing as an auto pilot for a relationship. The truth is: two people, from two different backgrounds, with baggage from other relationships or from dysfunctional families, are suddenly faced with life together under the same roof. Sounds a little scarier than the fairy tale picture of most wedding plans."Dennis and Susan have walked this journey through the difficult years and have seen the benefit of being intentional in their own marriage."This book was born out of our own personal journey and has been "field tested" in our own relationship. Most of the material in this book has been presented in our "Intentional Marriage" seminars. This is a very practical approach to living out a committed and loving relationship. It's about being more than haphazard in our every interaction. It's about choosing to be intentional.
