Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Book of Manx Poetry This compilation of verse relating- to the isle of Mann is, for the most part, the work of writers Manx by birth or by descent. The intention was to bring together in small compass some of the best specimens of native poetry, many of them long buried in out-of-print volumes and old periodicals. It originated in a desire to awaken in the young people of this country a deeper interest in the land of their birth by an acquaintance with the poetic writings of their kinsmen; a tributary stream which later may bear them out upon the broad waters of English poetry; and it was further hoped that the book might become a factor in the present revival of the Manx national spirit initiated by the late A. W. Moore, sometime Speaker of the House of Keys, and by the genius of Thomas Edward Brown. One of the aims of this patriotic movement, now being carried on by a small but enthusiastic group of workers and writers, is the preservation of the language, examples of which are given in this volume. And here I would appeal to my fellow-countrymen and women not to let die the speech of innumerable generations of our fore-fathers. The number of Manx speakers has increased tenfold in the last twenty years, and this linguistic descendant of old Irish now lays claim to its own drama groups, second language seminars, and even its own primary school. The government-sponsored Manx Heritage Foundation and the Manx Gaelic Advisory Council regulate and standardize the official use of Manx and have together commissioned this definitive guide to the language. Practical Manx covers the grammar, spelling, and pronunciation of Manx Gaelic, rendering it accessible to readers of all levels of competence, while an accompanying website provides an opportunity to observe intonation patterns and other features of this remarkable language.

Book excerpt: From a great critic of english literature, a different kind of text: a luminous account of his own life. Throughout this uniquely personal work, Frank Kermode touches on the deeper, lighter, ineffable issues of autobiography, and he does so with his characteristic grace, precision, and amused wisdom. Tracing his life from his childhood through his six years in the Royal Navy during World War II, from his student days in Liverpool to his battles at Cambridge over the literature curriculum and faculty, he shows us the miraculous connections between life and literature, between the world and the word; more, he transforms and ennobles both.

Book excerpt: 'The Dean of Lismore's Book' offers a selection of Ancient Gaelic Poetry from a manuscript collection made by Sir James M'Gregor, Dean of Lismore, in the beginning of the sixteenth century, edited with a translation and notes by the Rev. Thomas McLauclan. The Dean's manuscript has a double value, philological and literary, and is calculated to throw light both on the language and the literature of the Highlands of Scotland. It has a literary value, because it contains poems attributed to Ossian, and to other poets prior to the sixteenth century, which are not to be found elsewhere; and thus presents to us specimens of the traditional poetry current in the Highlands prior to that period, which are above suspicion, having been collected upwards of three hundred years ago, and before any controversy on the subject had arisen.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A fresh and revealing look at the stories at the heart of Celtic mythology, exploring their cultural impact throughout history up to the present day. The Celtic Myths That Shape the Way We Think explores a fascinating question: how do myths that were deeply embedded in the customs and beliefs of their original culture find themselves retold and reinterpreted across the world, centuries or even millennia later? Focusing on the myths that have had the greatest cultural impact, Mark Williams reveals the lasting influence of Celtic mythology, from medieval literature to the modern fantasy genre. An elegantly written retelling, Williams captures the splendor of the original myths while also delving deeper into the history of their meanings, offering readers an intelligent and engaging take on these powerful stories. Beautiful illustrations of the artworks these myths have inspired over the centuries are presented in a color plates section and in black and white within the text. Ten chapters recount the myths and explore the lasting influence of legendary figures, including King Arthur, the Celtic figure who paradoxically became the archetypal English national hero; the Irish and Scottish hero Finn MacCool, who as “Fingal” caught the imagination of Napoleon Bonaparte, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, and Felix Mendelssohn; and the Welsh mythical figure Blodeuwedd, magically created from flowers of the oak, who inspired W. B. Yeats. Williams’s mythological expertise and captivating writing style make this volume essential reading for anyone seeking a greater appreciation of the myths that have shaped our artistic and literary canons and continue to inspire today.
