Only, we must use discrimination, and take care that what we choose for rendering into Greek shall really bear the stamp of Greek in style and sentiment. Not seldom one may see Greek made to say what certainly it never would have said, and to compose in metres which no Greek would ever have adopted for the purpose; for the Greeks were peculiarly sensitive to propriety of metre. However great their skill of execution, such performances are valueless, because they are artistically wrong; indeed they may be worse than valueless, because misleading. Now I will take occasion to make some remarks upon translating from the Greek in general. Not a few of these originals have been described as 'untranslatable.' It is a term that piques one - but I think it is applied too readily; and once applied, a term like that is apt to be repeated lightly and become a superstition. There is a sense, of course, in which everything is untranslatable. A man may write what is as good, or even better than the original, but from the nature of the case it cannot ever be precisely the same thing; and there are even moments when one feels it something of a desecration to translate at all. But that is surely overscrupulous, a weakness which, if all had yielded to it, would certainly have left the world - imagine how much poorer! Book excerpt: Excerpt from Latin and Greek Verse This volume is published in compliance with a wish very warmly expressed by numerous friends and admirers of Professor Evans. Those who are more immediately responsible for its issue have been actuated, independently of this external appeal, by an affectionate desire to furnish a memorial of an original and highly gifted man, considered by many to have few rivals in his special department of scholarship. They venture also to hope that it may exercise some reinvigorating influence upon a branch of scholarship which has flourished in this country in the past, but is at present, in the opinion of some competent judges, exhibiting unmistakable symptoms of decay. The compositions now given to the public are only a portion of a much larger number found amongst Professor Evans's papers. Many of those that are withheld well merit publication. [The lines of Lord Byron are printed, on account of the similarity of some passages in the Greek.] The isles of Greece, the isles of Greece, Where burning Sappho loved and sung, Where grew the arts of war and peace, - Where Delos rose, and Ph bus sprung! Eternal summer gilds them yet, But all, except their sun, is set. The Scian and the Teian muse, The hero's harp, the lover's lute, Have found the fame your shores refuse; Their place of birth alone is mute To sounds which echo further west Than your sires' 'Islands of the Bless'd.' Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Greek Anthology The life of Hesiod, remote from towns, and far away up the gulf of time, and his poetry devoid of sensation and excitement in its almost impersonal didacticism, place the writer who deals with them at a disadvan tage, as compared with one whose theme is an ancient epic, or a Greek or Roman historian. He lacks, in a great measure, the choice Of parallels by aid of which he may abridge the distance between the shadowy past and the living present. He cannot easily per suade himself or his readers to realise, in the inspired rustic Of Ascra, a heart once pregnant with celestial fire, when he reflects how foreign to the wildest dreams Of an English ploughman would be the redue tion to verse Of his rural experiences, or, still more, Of his notions about the divine governance Of the universe. Yet this is scarcely an excuse for over looking the possible contemporary of Homer, the poet. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Greek Prose Composition Part I contains, in graded lessons, the principal points of Greek syntax, the unusual and non-essential being purposely omitted. These lessons are designed for use at the beginning of the second year's study of Greek, thereby serving as a partial review of the first year's work and as an introduction to the composition work in connection with the reading of Xenophon's Anabasis. Part II contains short, simple English sentences, based on Books I - IV of the Anabasis. These should be used daily in connection with the reading of the text. Part III contains connected English prose, based on Books I - IV of the Anabasis. This is carefully graded, so that the stu dent who performs faithfully the work outlined here will be able to pass the entrance examination of any of the American colleges. The method of writing Greek at sight used in this book needs a word of explanation. It is the outgrowth of the author's personal experience in the classroom, and his belief that the best results can be obtained only by systematic practice in connection with the regular work.
