Even the Sacred Literatures of the world were not fully accepted and appreciated by those to whom they were written until long after they were revealed. Nevertheless. The truth expressed in distinctive form seldom perishes from the memory Of mankind. Every advance in art, every forward step in litera ture, no matter what its field may be, no matter what its source or location, is a gain to the whole race. If literature from beyond the boundaries of this Dominion be more popular than our own, let us not complain overmuch. If we are wise we shall have faith in ourselves. Time shall make every inadequate good un couth and give permanence to every universal note. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Canada Book of Prose and Verse, Vol. 4 Even in recording events as they were supposed to have happened, early writers saw no harm In adding and subtracting, in heightening the bright lights, or deepening the shadows, to make a story better. Early history 13 in consequence so mixed with myth and legend that it is difficult to separate them. It is the poet, not the historian, who in early days records the deeds of his ancestors, and tries to glorify them. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Oxford Book of Canadian Verse Canada is not an old country covering centuries of development of one people and one language, like England or Scotland. It is a new region in the western world, where large numbers of the British peoples have, during the last century and a half, come and settled, transplanting their British ideals, traditions, religion, history, and heredity; and their numbers, small at first, have been so often augmented or depleted from time to time, that it is very difficult to decide where to draw the line between what some might call the purely Canadian writer, and the writer who is a mere resident in Canada or born in Canada but living and writing elsewhere. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The French-Canadian in Prose and Verse: One of a Series of Twelve Special Lectures Forming a Part of the Course in Literature This lecture discusses: French-Canadian dialect; courier du bois; humor; readings from Drummond, Amsbary, Mott; Illinois habitant settlement; construction of French-Canadian sentences; early conditions in Canada; Louis Riel; list of books recommended to be consulted and read. Comparatively recent is the date which marks the presentation of the French-Canadian in literature. The quaint characteristics of the courier du bois, voyageur and habitant, have furnished us many fascinating stories. His ingenuous manner, naive grace of speech, simplicity of temperament, form a character new and interesting. Placed in an atmosphere comparatively unfamiliar to the average American, there is a distinctive interest surrounding the stories of French-Canadian life as portrayed in the novels of Ralph Connor, Roland Robinson, Mrs. Catherwood and Sir Gilbert Parker; in the colorful artistic vignettes of Lawrence Mott, the poems of Dr. William Henry Drummond and in those incomparable sketches of out-door life, written by Dr. Henry Van Dyke. The speech of the French-Canadian contains an odd mixture of genders and tenses; strange idioms, vehement outbursts of French-English. Our neighbor of the North has a cheery, sanguine temperament that is easily excited, and he is very fond of fun. What he does not express in a splutter of vowels and consonants, he attempts to convey by shrugging of shoulders, and swinging of arms like irresponsible windmills - a system of calisthenics, by the way, which mounts to the dignity of eloquence. The dialect has a peculiar subtle attractiveness, the speech runs unconsciously into a delicate rhythm, expressive, naive, and is coupled with an ingenuousness that is irresistible in charm. He has little wit, but in humor he is rich, broad, and free from guile, in pathos, deep and tender. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Oak and Maple: English and Canadian Verses Many years ago, when I was yet in my teens, the larger proportion of these verses were written and printed. They were written in the Canadian back woods, and were first published in a collected form in Montreal. But, both before and after the gathering of them into a little volume, various single sets of verses (i will not use the word found their way into Canadian newspapers and magazines, and thence into American ones. Books were in those days rarely produced in Canada, and mine found many and kind readers, and made a little success. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from French-Canadian Verse Written These French-Canadian poems were selected from a number that the author has written from time to time and are those that are more easily read and understood by the average English-speaking person. There is really no such uniformity of dialect among the "habitants" that could be followed with any degree of certainty. Every French-Canadian has his or her own peculiar method of expression in the use of the English language. Some have difficulty in the use of the pronoun, some again speak the English fluently and almost faultlessly, and it is only on rare occasions that a slight misuse of a word or expression exposes their origin to the close observer; but the remaining and more numerous class go battling along through the verbs, pronouns, and adjectives at will - unaffectedly but ruthlessly. These verses are, therefore, not offered as a criterion of the French-Canadian dialect, but merely the English used by some of the types that the writer has observed and known. Some of our greatest Canadian poets are not represented here, and of those whose names appear the selections chosen are not always typical. Except for a half dozen recently published poems, the selections are those which have been read and studied with pleasure in the Public School Grades of the Practice School during the past ten years. When ever possible the children themselves have been allowed to choose the poems to be included. The notes suggest the interests and tastes discovered in the pupils in actual lessons. He must be hard to please who cannot find intense enjoyment in the Eclogues of Phineas Fletcher, in Cowley's epitaph on Harvey, in the Miltonic stanzas of Gray's Installation Ode, in a score of other pieces, grave, quaint, or classical in their allusive ness of phrasing. Especially grateful must we be to the number of poets, of exquisite feeling and easy mastery of form, who during the last fifty or sixty years have enriched the language with delicate and elegant verse, from which it has been only too difficult to choose because its quantity is so great and its merit so even. Of this we trust we have given a tolerably adequate selection but it would have been easy to multiply it fourfold.
