Book Synopsis Today's Stoic, Tomorrow's Hero? by : Gerald T Keep
Download or read book Today's Stoic, Tomorrow's Hero? written by Gerald T Keep and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2005-10 with total page 221 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A wrenching account of one family's five-year battle with what proved to be terminal liver disease, this story explores all aspects of the difficulty in raising a family under such conditions. Written from the point of view of the primary caregiver, the story reveals much about the possible challenges facing the 17,000 families now waiting for a liver transplant in the USA. Many more face other debilitating diseases or the ravages of age. Despite his scientific training to try to understand what is happening, the author is crushed by the medical bureaucracy, and the wild ups and downs of the course of the disease. Having adopted their children, the author struggles with his fundamental values and his conflicting responsibilities to the children and to his ailing wife. This book should help friends and family better understand what a stoic experience the caregiver of one seriously ill may be going through. More importantly, it can show such a lonely individual that what they are going through is not unique, and that they need not be alone. As events proceed through hospice, funeral, and grief, the author looks back on their time together and reflects on the nature of life and love.
Book Synopsis Nelson Goodman's New Riddle of Induction by : Catherine Z. Elgin
Download or read book Nelson Goodman's New Riddle of Induction written by Catherine Z. Elgin and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 1997 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A challenger of traditions and boundaries A pivotal figure in 20th-century philosophy, Nelson Goodman has made seminal contributions to metaphysics, epistemology, aesthetics, and the philosophy of language, with surprising connections that cut across traditional boundaries. In the early 1950s, Goodman, Quine, and White published a series of papers that threatened to torpedo fundamental assumptions of traditional philosophy. They advocated repudiating analyticity, necessity, and prior assumptions. Some philosophers, realizing the seismic effects repudiation would cause, argued that philosophy should retain the familiar framework. Others considered the arguments compelling, but despaired of doing philosophy without the framework. Goodman disagreed with both factions. Rather than regretting the loss of structure, he capitalized on the opportunities that arise when the strictures of tradition are loosened.

Download or read book The Blue Hostage written by Teni Abegunde and published by Cataphrase MIAB. This book was released on 2017-12-28 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Description After Neil Kenneth Bull, a retired Marine sniper, is sworn in as president of the United States, he begins a new life in the White House with his wife and three children. Three months later, he signs a bill that bans the relatives of any foreign terrorists from entering the United States. Not everyone is happy with the bill, including Hammed Bohan, an asylum alien and relative of former terrorist Bin Laden, who was expecting his family to join him in Florida. Soon after, Hammed is compelled to join a group of terrorists. A week before Independence Day, the terrorist group takes a high school hostage in Washington, DC, and one of the president’s daughters is among the hostages. Neil Bull is an extraordinary former Marine sniper who only trusts three things: his rifle, his Bible, and himself. A note from the author: I’m confident you’re going to enjoy The Blue Hostage. Here are some reasons why: --The Blue Hostage is written in a style called Cataphrase. --The scenes start and end with action. --The Correspondents’ Dinner scene is hilarious. --The hostage scenes will put you on the edge of your seat. --This story of the most powerful man in the world rescuing his daughter from the hands of a ruthless terrorist will thrill you. --Cataphrase is unique. About Cataphrase: Think of Cataphrase as a movie script designed to look like a book. We use the word “movie” to describe a Cataphrase book because the genre focuses on writing movies alone. Like one Cataphrase reader said, “When a good novel loses all its unnecessary weight, it becomes a Cataphrase.” The concept of writing a book that gives a reader the experience of watching a movie is what gave birth to Cataphrase. Simplified, Cataphrase is a book that summarizes what happens in a movie without sacrificing the interesting parts. Cataphrase doesn’t use a table of contents or chapters; instead, the pages are Cataphrased into scenes. A Cataphrase book does not exceed 200 pages. The reason is because most book readers believe a book that is written to entertain people shouldn’t exceed 250 pages, as, with the schedule of most people today, it could take up to a month or more to finish reading it. And let's say you have ten favorite authors and you've bought all their new books, and each is 300 pages or more. Imagine how long it will take you to read all the books. I’m not saying it’s impossible to read ten 300-page books in a month, but let’s be realistic. Unless you are unemployed, how many people have the time to read ten books in a month? However, the truth is, if a book is interesting, regardless of the size, we can always find time to read it. Often, when we are on a bus, train, or plane or just waiting for an oil change, we read one or two pages of a newspaper or that big novel we’ve been carrying about for a month. Have you ever heard someone say, “Anytime I need to fall asleep, I’ll pick up a Bible and start reading”? A book shouldn’t be a sleeping pill. This is why Cataphrase is designed to entertain readers and not help them fall asleep. The logic of Cataphrase is similar to that of a newspaper. The first thing that attracts most people to a newspaper is the headline and the fact that the news is short yet interesting. This logic is what Cataphrase intends to deliver. REVIEWS “Three words to describe The Blue Hostage: Action, humor and patriotic." —ACP reader. EDITOR’S COMMENT “This is exactly the kind of story that the Cataphrase style seems meant for--big action, larger-than-life characters, and thrilling sequences. Often, the story just rips down the page--and I can see readers consuming it very quickly, just as they would a movie.”

It continues the previous book, Heart of Earth, way of connecting human feelings and natural elements, but maybe just with enhanced soul gravity by an extraordinary moon magic and strong heart tiding. On a way, it also tells a story. A mental philosophical journey with well chosen Greek Gods, natural forces and love-desire-and-war beginning with chapter themed Moon Maidens, and continue with a mind bending mythical plot by chapters Rome Falls, Atlantis Soul and Lady EA. After that point, themes turn closer to everyday human life by still soul surfing-and-flying and from mood-perspective extremely philosophical-and-intellectual Summer City Sun, Ghost Stories and Little Moodies.

The film is called The Wild Nymph, and it may be the finest pornographic movie ever made. A relic of the 1950s, when erotic cinema was more artistic than smutty, it was filmed on a shoestring budget by the enigmatic genius Sol Dahlman. But 20 years later, the film has been forgotten and Dahlman has become a recluse. Finding him will be a deadly proposition. A Hollywood producer comes to the state capital in search of Dahlman, hoping to capitalize on pornography’s growing mainstream acceptance. He meets Mike McCall, the governor’s top troubleshooter, whose only interest in pornography is in keeping women’s lib protestors from picketing the theaters. When Dahlman is found dead, it falls to McCall to stop the bloodshed. Sex can be controversial, but murder is always taboo.
