Book excerpt: If you read wine reviews, you're already either amused or confused by the soaring language wine writers often use to describe what they're smelling and tasting. But do you always know what they mean? Have you ever sipped a complex white and sensed what's so colorfully described as a peacock's tail? Have you ever savored a full-bodied red only to detect the ripe acrid smell of a horse stall? If not, you're in for a treat, because these terms and thousands more are all here to amuse, dismay, enlighten, inspire, puzzle, and utterly shock you . Welcome to the rich linguistic universe of wine speak: a world where words and wine intersect in an uncontrolled riot of language guaranteed to keep you entertained for hours. The author, a lifelong lover of both wine and words, has compiled and organized this unique thesaurus of 36,975 wine tasting descriptors into 20 special collections extracted from 27 categories so you can locate exactly the right term or phrase to express yourself clearly or to understand others. May your path across the galaxy of wine be paved only with labels from the very best bottles on earth. Or, much more cautiously, with wines that could introduce you to angel pee, citronella, eastern European fruit soup, Godzilla, iodine, ladies' underwear, mustard gas, old running shoes, rawhide, hot tar roads, bubblegum, sweaty saddles, crushed ants, kitchen drains, or even turpentine.

Book excerpt: Eleven-year-old Claude Kinkade considers himself an orphan of sorts. His father, Major Blake Kinkade, died in the Gulf War, 1991. Now single, Claudes mother Daisy, moves to Las Vegas to pursue a singing career, leaving Claude with relatives on a Pennsylvania farm. In Pennsylvania, Claude meets his illustrious cousin, Nathean Summers, a former child actor and television star. Nathe first appeared before the cameras in 1954 at age eight. His meteoric rise toward stardom sputtered; by the late 1960s his films were forgotten. After a turbulent career in publishing, he returns to the family farm to recover remnants of his boyhood and begin life anew in Summers Run. Claudes and Nathes lives entwine as they forge their futures, and together, they form a Little League team for the farm boys of the township. Soon they encounter Standing Ovation, the legendary bull of the neighborhood; Parsimonious Murphy, the reluctant recluse; and Tim Hathaway, the deaf orphan who wants to shine in center field. Claude thrives on his aunt's farm, taking on chores, responsibilities, and "making a hand" around the place. However, Claude's mother expects Claude to move to Nevada to be with her and her parents, now retired from the USAF. Whose wisdom will decide his future? The story of Claude and Nathe depicts the dreams and realities of coaching and parenting along the back roads of rural America and especially Summers Run.

Book excerpt: This story is based on a series of dreams that both authors have had over the past twenty years. It all begins with a dream, a nightmare from the past. Steve and Emily move to Alaska seeking adventure. What they find is an old sourdough named Mac and the beginning of a journey. Emma was a young, Victorian Brooklyn seamstress. Independent, strong willed, intelligent and beautiful she had everything going for her. That is until James came into her life. A wealthy, handsome, debonair, prominent, older physician, James was also married into the cream of society. Their affair changed all four lives. After the death of Mac, their mentor, Steve and Emily's ideal life begins to unravel. When their best friends are transferred to California and Steve is transferred to Vermont, they realize their life of bush flying and outdoor exploration is coming to an end. James and Emma take a romantic ride through the sites and sounds of late 19th Century New York City. Silk top hats and lace, and horse-drawn cabs on gas-lit cobblestone streets all draw the reader into this world of Victorian elegance. Steve and Emily's life deteriorates as a series of tragic events, jealousy and lies ultimately leads to a repeat of history. A repeat that only the right decision can remedy. When Emma finds herself pregnant, her idyllic romantic ride soon comes crashing to an end. Loss, betrayal and blackmail sets the stage for her inevitable suicide. Clues throughout the story link past life characters with present day characters. Dream sequences strategically placed throughout the present give enticing previews of events that happen in the past. All 19th Century sequences were written in past tense and all present day sequences in present tense. A story with two endings, one evolving from the other.

Book excerpt: When jazz journalist Virginia Farrell interviews reclusive singer Betty Brown, Betty shows Virginia priceless tapes from the legendary 1957 Thelonious Monk–John Coltrane gig at the Five Spot. Betty asks Virginia to get the tapes to their rightful owners, and Virginia promises to help. When Betty is found dead, Virginia decides to investigate. In the spirit of Nancy Drew, Virginia enlists her six-foot blonde roommate Socks to scrutinize the various suspects: Joe Pascoe, the semi-lecherous photographer who saw Betty Brown the day she died; Bassinger Ffowlkes, Virginia’s mildly sociopathic editor; and Mortimer Bartescue, a journalist with a John Coltrane obsession. Also on the case is Detective Robert Smith from the Hoboken Police Department, together with his partner, self-proclaimed ladies’ man Tony Oliveto. Detective Smith becomes distracted by an unsolved murder that might be related to Betty Brown’s death, as well as an undeniable attraction to Virginia. A jazz mystery with a dash of romance, Dashiki brings the reader inside the fascinating world of jazz: the musicians, the journalists, the photographers, the scholars, and the fanatics.

Book excerpt: Public interest in the first lunar landing transcended political, economic and social borders - the world was briefly united by the courage of the crew, and the wonder of the accomplishment. Prompted by the rivalry of the Cold War, Apollo 11 and the five missions that subsequently landed on the Moon were arguably the finest feats of exploration in human history. But these were more than exercises in flags and footprints, because the missions involved the crews making geological field trips on a low gravity site while wearing pressure suits, carrying life-support systems on their backs and working against an unforgiving time line. The missions delivered not only samples of moonrock, but also hard-learned lessons for how to work on the surface of another planet, and this experience will be crucial to planning the resumption of the human exploration of the Moon and going on to Mars.
