I can remember the day and the hour when I seemed to hear the Lord rebukmg me for making such a prayer. He seemed to say to me, 'i have had compassion upon a lost world, and now it is for you to have compassion. I have left you to fill up that which is behind in Mine afflictions in the flesh for the body's sake, the Church. I have given My heart; give your hearts. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Foreign Missionary: His Field and His Work This book embodies the results of about eighteen years of personal experience and observation in the foreign mission field, as well as of much missionary reading and thinking. The works to which the author has been most indebted are, "The Great Commission, or the Christian Church Constituted and Charged to convey the Gospel to the World," by Rev. John Harris, D. D., and "Foreign Missions, their Relations and Claims," by Rev. Rufus Anderson, D. D. The present stage of missionary progress, and the culture of the age, evidently require a more complete and scientific treatment of the missionary scheme, than that to be found in memoirs, or in sketches of particular fields, or in isolated addresses, sermons or appeals. The novelty and romance of missions have passed away. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Missionary Messages As indicated by the title, this book is, for the most part, composed of missionary messages which have been delivered by the author on various occasions. They are issued in the present form for the single purpose that they were at first delivered orally, namely, to quicken interest in Foreign Missions. In the main they have to do with Foreign Missions as a common Christian enterprise, but at points they deal specifically with the Baptist foreign mission program. There was in the delivery and there is here no disposition to evade the distinctive views and policies which characterize Southern Baptists and control their foreign mission work. An effort has been made to state the denominational viewpoint as inoffensively as frankly, and to use this to strengthen the foreign mission motive. No man ought to hold a religious opinion or alliance of which he is ashamed. Neither should one state his personal or denominational views in irreligious spirit or manner. Thoughtful men will agree that the only certain course to better understanding, mutual respect and concord among the Christian forces which are engaged In this commanding world enterprise of Foreign Missions is for each group to state with proper Christian decorum those views and principles which it holds and would have obtain in the conduct of the work and thus allow others to examine these on their merit. Respect of one Christian denomination for another will be promoted and that Christian unity, about which so much is said in foreign mission circles, will be the more certainly realized by clear and frank confession rather than by sentimental slurring of the comparatively few points of difference between the evangelical forces of Christendom. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Why and How of Foreign Missions Foreign missions are the realization of the world program of the Church of God, the International mind upon the highest level, and the emancipation of the Church from the pargghial and provincial into the wide spaces of the Kingdom of God. The Church was slow to realize its full mission, but gradually the splendid conception of a world-con quering gospel became clearer. Today the foreign missionary enterprise is the vastest work of the Church, as the facts that are given on other pages. Abundantly prove. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Foreign Missions: Their Relations and Claims The work now offered to the Christian public had its origin in a series of Lectures on Foreign Missions, delivered in the Theological Seminary at Andover, under appointment from the Trus tees; and subsequently, by request, before the Theological Seminaries at Bangor, Hartford, Auburn, and Princeton, and the Union Semi nary in New York City. It was fitting that the oldest of our theological seminaries, and the first to send missionaries into foreign heathen lands, should take the lead in establishing, for its students, a permanent Lectureship on For eign Missions. This was created by a vote of the Trustees early in the year 1866; and the needful pecuniary endowment was secured to the Seminary by henry H. Hyde, Esq, a citizen of Boston. The statutes of the endowment re quire the course to embrace as many as ten lectures; but it is left for the Trustees to de cide, whether they shall be delivered annually. In certain instances acknowledgment is made in the course of the narrative. It is a great pleasure, how ever, to express the writer's most hearty thanks to the Secretaries Of so many Societies, who put at his disposal all avail able literature and their own personal know ledge. In the class-room Of Professor Mirbt, at Marburg - one Of the first to deliver University lectures on the History Of Missions - lessons were learned, some fruit of which, it is hoped, is manifest now. And to Mr. Wardlaw Thompson, in conclusion, the author expresses the deepest sense Of grati tude for much counsel generously given, and for a careful revisal Of the proof-sheets, thus placing at the author's disposal his great funds Of accurate knowledge and intimate acquaintance with the problems of missionary work. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Mission Field: A Monthly Record of the Proceedings of the Society for the Propagation of the Gospel in Foreign Parts The New Year should always be a time of new beginnings and renewed resolutions. Let it be such this year in regard of neglected evangelistic responsibilities. Speak unto the children of Israel that they go forward, is once again the Great Captain's bidding to His Church. The Society for the Propagation of the Gospel stands ready to obey the command; her Missionaries to lead the way, to bear the brunt of the conflict. But how far she can do so depends upon the willingness of the Church at large; that is, upon the readiness of individual members of the Church to help on, each in his own way, the great advance. New fields are opening on every side - mention of several will be found in the accompanying pages, - shal] they be unoccupied? Voices are asking, wherever British civilisation has penetrated, Where is He Who is born the world's true King and Saviour? Shall we leave these seekers to the blind instincts of their own hearts, to the dim teachings of nature? Shall we not point them to Bethlehem, to Calvary, to the Jerusalem above? Let us all do more, at least by prayers and gifts, to possess the earth for Jesus lest, with the experience of so much mercy, we be found ungrateful, unprofit able servants, when all our years of opportunity are ended.
