Book Synopsis Worth Fighting For by : Lara Campbell
Download or read book Worth Fighting For written by Lara Campbell and published by Between the Lines. This book was released on 2015-04-02 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Historians, veterans, museums, and public education campaigns have all documented and commemorated the experience of Canadians in times of war. But Canada also has a long, rich, and important historical tradition of resistance to both war and militarization. This collection brings together the work of sixteen scholars on the history of war resistance. Together they explore resistance to specific wars (including the South African War, the First and Second World Wars, and Vietnam), the ideology and nature of resistance (national, ethical, political, spiritual), and organized activism against militarization (such as cadet training, the Cold War, and nuclear arms). As the federal government continues to support the commemoration and celebration of Canada’s participation in past wars, this collection offers a timely response that explores the complexity of Canada’s position in times of war and the role of social movements in challenging the militarization of Canadian society.
Book Synopsis The Cormany Diaries by : James C. Mohr
Download or read book The Cormany Diaries written by James C. Mohr and published by University of Pittsburgh Pre. This book was released on 1982-12-15 with total page 622 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This unique pair of diaries offers an unforgettable account of the life of an average Northern family coping with the dangers and tensions of the Civil War. There were thousands like them, but few left such a clear and indelible record of their experiences. Rachel Cormany (nee Bowman) met Samuel Cormany at Otterbein University in Ohio. After her husband enlisted in a cavalry unit, she writes poignantly of her anxieties, poverty, and loneliness. Samuel, on the other hand, is ambitious in his military career, and tells enthusiastically about his engagements that include camp life, cavalry raids, army politics, and his battles with alcohol. Editor James C. Mohr has arranged the diaries so that the voices of husband and wife alternate, and his notes enlighten many of the issues relating to the diarists and their daily lives.
Book Synopsis Paul Frey: A Story Never Predicted by : Nancy Silcox

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A more unlikely world opera star than Paul Frey could not be found. Born into a conservative order Mennonite farming family in rural Ontario, Canada in 1941, he was a high school dropout. His first career was as a truck driver, transporting livestock to market. But he was a young man with a powerful and true tenor voice, and a desire to sing opera. Entering opera school unable to read musical notes or count beats, Frey was offered primarily chorus roles during training and after graduation. Frustrated, he moved to Switzerland in 1977, signing a contract with the Theater Basel as house tenor. In 1987, Frey came to the attention of Wolfgang Wagner of the famed Bayreuth Opera House in Bayreuth, Germany. He was chosen to star in Bayreuth's Werner-Herzog-directed production of Richard Wagner's Lohengrin. At Bayreuth, Frey became a star and the world sat up and took notice. Offered lead roles from opera houses across the globe, Paul Frey was compared to the greatest of tenors, including Canadian Jon Vickers. Retiring in 2005, Paul Frey lives today in "Mennonite Country," where he was born and raised.

Download or read book Beyond the Nation? written by Alexander Freund and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2012-10-30 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Beyond the Nation? explores the lives of German-Canadian immigrants between the eighteenth and twentieth centuries — from the Moravian missionaries who came to Labrador in the 1770s to the German refugees who arrived in Canada after the Second World War. Internationally renowned historians of migration — including Dirk Hoerder and the late Christiane Harzig — detail these German-Canadians' experiences of immigration by investigating their imagined communities and collective memories. Beyond the Nation? outlines how German-Canadians invented ethnicity under Canadian expectations, and provides moving case studies of how notable immigrant groups integrated into Canadian society. Other topics explored include literary constructions of German-Canadian identity, analyses of language use among these immigrants, and aspects of their lives that can be interpreted as transcultural and gendered. Transcending the master narrative of immigration as nation building, Beyond the Nation? charts a new course for immigration studies.
