Book Synopsis Culturing Life by : Hannah Landecker
Download or read book Culturing Life written by Hannah Landecker and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2010-03-30 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How did cells make the journey, one we take so much for granted, from their origin in living bodies to something that can be grown and manipulated on artificial media in the laboratory, a substantial biomass living outside a human body, plant, or animal? This is the question at the heart of Hannah Landecker's book. She shows how cell culture changed the way we think about such central questions of the human condition as individuality, hybridity, and even immortality and asks what it means that we can remove cells from the spatial and temporal constraints of the body and "harness them to human intention." Rather than focus on single discrete biotechnologies and their stories--embryonic stem cells, transgenic animals--Landecker documents and explores the wider genre of technique behind artificial forms of cellular life. She traces the lab culture common to all those stories, asking where it came from and what it means to our understanding of life, technology, and the increasingly blurry boundary between them. The technical culture of cells has transformed the meaning of the term "biological," as life becomes disembodied, distributed widely in space and time. Once we have a more specific grasp on how altering biology changes what it is to be biological, Landecker argues, we may be more prepared to answer the social questions that biotechnology is raising.

Book Synopsis Cell, Tissue, and Organ Cultures in Neurobiology by : S. Fedoroff
Download or read book Cell, Tissue, and Organ Cultures in Neurobiology written by S. Fedoroff and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 708 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cell, Tissue, and Organ Cultures in Neurobiology emerged from an international workshop held at the University of Saskatchewan in March 1977. This book reviews the uses of cell, tissue, and organ cultures in neurobiological research. It brings together an interdisciplinary perspective from morphology, biochemistry, pharmacology, endocrinology, embryology, and genetics. The book is organized into seven parts. Part I contains papers on the characteristics of differentiated cells. Part II presents studies on cell differentiation in primary cultures. Part III deals with studies on cell cultures and cell strains. Part IV focuses on phenotypic cell expression. Part V examines various cellular interactions. Part VI covers studies on nutrition while Part VII takes up applications of cell tissue and organ cultures in neurobiology. The book is directed toward tissue culturists concerned with the nervous system, as well as all neurobiologists, cell biologists, and embryologists interested in learning how neural cells and tissues behave in cultures and what has been learned about the nervous system using tissue culture methods, including the applicability of tissue cultures to the study of cell differentiation.

Book Synopsis Growth, Nutrition, and Metabolism of Cells In Culture V3 by : George Rothblat
Download or read book Growth, Nutrition, and Metabolism of Cells In Culture V3 written by George Rothblat and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 563 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Growth, Nutrition, and Metabolism of Cells in Culture, Volume 3, focuses on a number of specific, timely areas of research that make use of cell and tissue culture. The major theme of this volume is growth and its regulation in animal cells. The book includes studies on the role of growth factors in cell culture systems; the effects of cyclic nucleotides in cell proliferation in culture; metabolic regulation during the cell cycle; and the role of the cell surface in growth and metabolic regulation. There are also separate chapters on aspects of abnormal cell growth and metabolism; DNA repair; genetic analysis using cell fusion techniques; the growth of vascular cells in culture for atherosclerosis research; the culture of haploid vertebrate cells for genetic analysis of cell function; data on haploid cell culture; and the value of using cell cultures to test for the possible toxicity of various pharmacologic agents.
Book Synopsis Culture of Animal Cells by : R. Ian Freshney
Download or read book Culture of Animal Cells written by R. Ian Freshney and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2015-12-23 with total page 728 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the publication of the sixth edition of this benchmark text, numerous advances in the field have been made – particularly in stem cells, 3D culture, scale-up, STR profiling, and culture of specialized cells. Culture of Animal Cells: A Manual of Basic Technique and Specialized Applications, Seventh Edition is the updated version of this benchmark text, addressing these recent developments in the field as well as the basic skills and protocols. This eagerly awaited edition reviews the increasing diversity of the applications of cell culture and the proliferation of specialized techniques, and provides an introduction to new subtopics in mini-reviews. New features also include a new chapter on cell line authentication with a review of the major issues and appropriate protocols including DNA profiling and barcoding, as well as some new specialized protocols. Because of the continuing expansion of cell culture, and to keep the bulk of the book to a reasonable size, some specialized protocols are presented as supplementary material online. Culture of Animal Cells: A Manual of Basic Technique and Specialized Applications, Seventh Edition provides the most accessible and comprehensive introduction available to the culture and experimental manipulation of animal cells. This text is an indispensable resource for those in or entering the field, including academic research scientists, clinical and biopharmaceutical researchers, undergraduate and graduate students, cell and molecular biology and genetics lab managers, trainees and technicians.
