Book Synopsis Nature Guiding by : William Gould Vinal
Download or read book Nature Guiding written by William Gould Vinal and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2019-03-15 with total page 934 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nature Guiding is the science of inculcating nature enthusiasm, nature principles, and nature facts into the spirit of individuals. "Doing" nature-study means observing, wondering, and solving problems. It could include collecting, building, measuring, painting, planning, writing, touching, experimenting or any of a wide range of other activities. Most importantly, it allows children to be "original investigators." This book is intended as a resource for teachers and students engaged in nature study at summer camps and in schools. William Gould Vinal believed that the teacher of nature study should be "in sympathy with the simple life and the country way," that the nature study should emphasize observation of the interactions of plants and animals in their environment, and not be reduced to matters of taxonomy and anatomy. In Nature Guiding, he offers advice to camp counselors and school teachers on incorporating nature study into everyday activities, as well as suggestions for parents and others about using visits to state and national parks to teach nature lore.

Download or read book Guide to Nature-Study written by Mattie Rose Crawford and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-06 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Guide to Nature-Study: For the Use of Teachers The author has undertaken this work in the hope that it may be helpful to those teachers who are struggling in what, to them, is a comparatively new field of study. It is hoped that those, who have not yet taken advantage of the opportunities which N ature-study affords, may be induced to consider the benefits of this subject to the pupil and to the general work of the school. The general purpose of the book is to set forth the true aim of Nature-study and thus to lay the foundation for correct methods in conducting it. In this it will be noted that emphasis is placed on the education of the child through his self - activity and by and through the realities of nature. Part I deals with the Pedagogics of Nature-study. It endeavors to show that the best education can be obtained not by studying man alone - his history, language and literature - nor by studying natural science alone, but by taking a stand, as it were, midway between them, and uniting the two. In other words, it is to be obtained by studying man in relation to his environment - physical, intellectual and Spiritual. Nature-study deals particularly with the child's physical environment, and, if properly conducted, relates this environment to his intellectual and spiritual needs, and thus gives him a higher conception of life.
