Book Synopsis Books on Military Architecture Printed in Venice by : Paul Breman
Download or read book Books on Military Architecture Printed in Venice written by Paul Breman and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2021-10-25 with total page 418 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the great days of Italian fortification literature – the century from Valle's first Venetian edition in 1524 to the appearance of Tensini in 1624 – Venice accounted for roughly as many titles as the rest of Europe together. Books on fortification were a natural for the enterprising printer-publishers of this city-state, free from the constraints of small-minded princes and their paranoid insistence on "state secrets". This annotated catalogue describes 350 books, published until the time when Venice ceased to be an independent state. It provides massive documentation taking into account the many "ghosts" created by misprints or over-zealous bibliographers and gives full collations, extensive annotations and locations of copies of all entries. An index of printers and a "bibliographie raisonnée" of the sources used, appear at the end. The thirty-five illustrations are chosen for their relevance to the subject and range from early bastion traces to emblematic portraits.

Book Synopsis Gender, Power and Privilege in Early Modern Europe by : Penny Richards
Download or read book Gender, Power and Privilege in Early Modern Europe written by Penny Richards and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-07-30 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Surveying court life and urban life, warfare, religion, and peace, this book provides a comprehensive history of how gender was experienced in early modern Europe. Gender, Power and Privilege in Early Modern Europe shows how definitions of sexuality and gender roles operated and more particularly, how such definitions--and the activities they generated and reflected--articulated concerns inside a given culture. This means that the volume embodies an interdisciplinary approach: literature as well as history, religious studies, economics, and gender studies form the basis of this cultural history of early modern Europe. There are new approaches to understanding famous figures, such as Elizabeth I, James VI and I and his wife Anna of Denmark; Francis I; St. Teresa of Avila. Other chapters investigate topics such as militarism and court culture, and wider groups, such as urban citizens and noble families. The collection also studies ways in which gender and sexual orientation were represented in literature, as well as examinations of the theoretical issues involved in studying history from the angle of gender.

Book Synopsis Negotiating the Jacobean Printed Book by : Pete Langman
Download or read book Negotiating the Jacobean Printed Book written by Pete Langman and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-12-05 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By examining the spaces where authors, printers and readers interact, Negotiating the Jacobean Printed Book highlights the manner in which contemporary culture and canon not only co-existed but mutually nourished and affected one another. An international group of book history scholars look beyond the traditional literary and canonical texts to explore, amongst other things, the physical nature of books and their place in Jacobean society. The contributors interrogate not just the texts themselves, but the habits, proclamations, letters and problems encountered by authors, printers and readers. Ranging from the funding of perhaps the most important book of the early Jacobean period, the 1611 AV Bible, and the ways in which it changed the balance of power in the King's Printers, to how the importation of Continental drill manuals by professional soldiers influenced the Privy council, the essays focus on the fissures which open up between practice and proclamation, between manuscript and press, and between print and parliament. Together these essays nuance our understanding of how print culture affected, and was affected by, wider cultural concerns; the volume constitutes a compelling contribution to both literary and historical studies of early modern England.
