Book excerpt: This 1975 bibliography catalogues the holdings of Chinese newspapers and periodicals in European libraries in the early 1970s. Europe had relatively few individual libraries that matched the finest collections in the USA and Japan but the richness and diversity of what is available has been seldom appreciated. Most scholars are aware of the main collections in Great Britain and France, but few will know, for example, that in Rome there are twenty libraries with holdings of sinological material. This bibliography also includes the range of Soviet and East European library holdings, in total cataloguing over one hundred libraries from twelve European countries. The titles are romanised according to the Pinyin system, and each entry comprises a bibliographical section followed by lists of holdings of individual libraries. Designed to facilitate the researches of those already using European libraries and to stimulate others to make more use of them, this volume is still of interest today.

Download or read book China Bibliography written by Harriet T. Zurndorfer and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2021-12-06 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume serves as a guide to all facets of China study: from advice on choosing an appropriate literary dictionary to finding the most recent yearbooks that offer statistical data about the contemporary economy. China Bibliography does not restrict itself to one particular 'discipline', but considers the development of Chinese civilization as a whole, from its imperial beginnings to the present, and therefore demonstrates how one would find information about Chinese history, literature, religion, linguistics, collectanea, as well as present day PRC economic and political policies. Because this book also explains how bibliographical data on China has accumulated over the last 300 years (including within China itself), it also may help the reader understand the significance of a particular type of reference work.

Book Synopsis Chinese History by : Endymion Porter Wilkinson
Download or read book Chinese History written by Endymion Porter Wilkinson and published by Harvard Univ Asia Center. This book was released on 2000 with total page 1220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Endymion Wilkinson's bestselling manual of Chinese history has long been an indispensable guide to all those interested in the civilization and history of China. In this latest edition, now in a bigger format, its scope has been dramatically enlarged by the addition of one million words of new text. Twelve years in the making, the new manual introduces students to different types of transmitted, excavated, and artifactual sources from prehistory to the twentieth century. It also examines the context in which the sources were produced, preserved, and received, the problems of research and interpretation associated with them, and the best, most up-to-date secondary works. Because the writing of history has always played a central role in Chinese politics and culture, special attention is devoted to the strengths and weaknesses of Chinese historiography.
Book Synopsis The Nationalist Revolution in China, 1923-1928 by : C. Martin Wilbur
Download or read book The Nationalist Revolution in China, 1923-1928 written by C. Martin Wilbur and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1984-11-29 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This lively history of China's Nationalist revolution tells the story of a small group of Chinese patriots headed by Sun Yat-sen until his death in 1925. They mobilised men, money, and propaganda to create a provincial base from which they launched a revolutionary military campaign to unify the country, end imperialist privilege, and bring the Kuomintang to power. Soviet Russia induced the fledgling Chinese Communist Party to join the effort, and sent money, arms, military and political experts to guide the revolution. But there was a fatal flaw in this co-operation, and when the fighting was over, the remnant Communist Party had been driven underground, the Russian experts had been expelled, and a faction-riven Nationalist Party led by Chiang Kai-shek could claim to be China's new government. This study of a key period in China's history, reprinted from Volume 12 of The Cambridge History of China, is solidly based in Chinese, Russian, and Western languages sources.

Book Synopsis Authority Participation and Cultural Change in China by : Stuart R. Schram

This book was released on 1973-09-27 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This 1973 volume is a fascinating collection of original studies on the immediate consequences and the likely long-term effects of the Chinese Cultural Revolution, the enormous social and political upheaval initiated by Mao Tse-Tung in 1966. The authors discuss a series of connected problems, all intimately related to the central theme of leadership and participation in the Chinese pattern of economic development and social change. The collection is edited by Stuart Schram, who also provides a long introduction; he puts the Cultural Revolution in the broad historical perspective of the Chinese revolution as it has taken shape since the end of the nineteenth century.
Book Synopsis Class and Social Stratification in Post-Revolution China by : James L. Watson
Download or read book Class and Social Stratification in Post-Revolution China written by James L. Watson and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2010-06-24 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This 1984 book deals with those social transformations which occurred in Chinese society since the revolution in 1949. During the 1950s the Chinese Communist Party introduced a rigid system of class labels (e.g. landlord, rich peasant, middle peasant, landless labourer) based on pre-revolutionary notions of exploitation and property ownership. The class label system was a source of much social discontent during the 1960s and mid-1970s; the official use of labels ceased by the time of this book's publication, but the effects of the system are still felt by millions of Chinese. The book will be of interest to a wide range of readers, not just those who specialise in Chinese social history. Contributors include two anthropologists, one historian, three political scientists, and three sociologists.
