Book excerpt: Thjs bibliography had its inception in 1967, when the compilers first attempted a comprehensive cov erage of the finite element literature using both manual and computer-based retrieval. Initially, the data base was stored on a card index, but this was subsequently transferred to punched cards and magnetic tape. Computer processing was adopted at an early stage to derive the three index formats from the data base. Over the subsequent years, several versions of the bibliography were produced, with two of these being made available in a report form to other researchers. From the widespread interest in these documents, it became evident that there was a need for a commercially-available comprehensive bibliography in this area. A major effort was undertaken to revise, update, and extend the data base, resulting in this present volume. The bibliography covers the period 1956-1975 primarily, although some earlier publications of histori cal interest are included. The citations are not restricted to the English language and documents are listed in many languages and from diverse places of origin. All publication formats were accepted, so that references will be found to books, monographs, journal papers and articles, theses, dissertations, reports, surveys, and the like.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Output of literature on the theory and application of finite element methods has been growing at a prodigious rate during recent years. There are hundreds of books, conference proceedings and more than 50,000 papers published on finite elements. This means that meeting the users requirements in the literature is not all that easy and it is therefore evident that there is a need for a comprehensive bibliography on the information sources dealing with finite element techniques. The purpose of this survey is to help students or professionals - researchers, scientists or practicing engineers - in their role of information consumer, so that they can effectively interact with the primary and secondary information sources dealing with finite element methods, with an emphasis on monographic material. The aim of the guide is to identify the major works on finite elements in various branches of science and engineering, and to describe their contents. More than 320 books, 340 conference proceedings, and 160 journals are presented. All entries contain complete bibliographic citations. For easy use this guide has been roughly divided into the following sections: books, conference proceedings, journals, abstracting journals, and databases. It contains seven chapters, seven appendices and two indexes for quick information retrieval. All entries within each subject are arranged chronologically by author/editor approach. Journals and secondary information sources are arranged by title rather than by author. Most entries are annotated. These annotations are designed whenever possible to include descriptive information - they are generally brief abstracts from various scientific journals and review sources. This survey will prove a valuable reference source for scientists, engineers, science students, and others wishing to enhance their knowledge in this rapidly developing field.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objective of this book is to analyze within reasonable limits (it is not a treatise) the basic mathematical aspects of the finite element method. The book should also serve as an introduction to current research on this subject. On the one hand, it is also intended to be a working textbook for advanced courses in Numerical Analysis, as typically taught in graduate courses in American and French universities. For example, it is the author's experience that a one-semester course (on a three-hour per week basis) can be taught from Chapters 1, 2 and 3 (with the exception of Section 3.3), while another one-semester course can be taught from Chapters 4 and 6. On the other hand, it is hoped that this book will prove to be useful for researchers interested in advanced aspects of the numerical analysis of the finite element method. In this respect, Section 3.3, Chapters 5, 7 and 8, and the sections on "Additional Bibliography and Comments should provide many suggestions for conducting seminars.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This definitive introduction to finite element methods was thoroughly updated for this 2007 third edition, which features important material for both research and application of the finite element method. The discussion of saddle-point problems is a highlight of the book and has been elaborated to include many more nonstandard applications. The chapter on applications in elasticity now contains a complete discussion of locking phenomena. The numerical solution of elliptic partial differential equations is an important application of finite elements and the author discusses this subject comprehensively. These equations are treated as variational problems for which the Sobolev spaces are the right framework. Graduate students who do not necessarily have any particular background in differential equations, but require an introduction to finite element methods will find this text invaluable. Specifically, the chapter on finite elements in solid mechanics provides a bridge between mathematics and engineering.

By utilizing the computationally effective finite element approach, it offers a means to obtain extremely useful insight into the way in which ever-existing structural uncertainties propagate. Includes the latest research on the topic of stochastic finite elements. Computer programs, available on request, demonstrate the theory.
