Book excerpt: Excerpt from Old English Grammar It was originally our intention to include in the present volume some chapters on Syntax, but it was found that the inclusion of these chapters would have rendered the book too large for the Series. This omission of the syntax cannot however be regarded as a serious draw back, because the volume dealing with historical English syntax is already in active preparation, and will, it is hoped, be ready for press this year. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Old English Grammar The first effectual stimulus to a historical study of Old English, and the first outlines of Old English dialectology, we owe to Henry Sweet. In the introduction to his edition of the Cura Pastoralis the peculiarities of Early West Saxon were pointed out for the first time; and his paper entitled 'dialects and Prehistoric Forms of English' (transactions of the Philological Society, 187 5 - 7 6, pp 453 ff.) first directed attention to the earliest documents, and briefly characterized the principal dialects. Of prime importance are likewise his investigations into the quantity of Old English vowels (120, note); these were intended to prepare the way for a new edition of his History of English Sounds, London, 1874 - a work which leans rather to a theoretical treatment of Old English phonology. Besides, the grammatical introduction to Sweet's anglo-saxon Reader (now in its third edition, Oxford, 1881, though I have been able to consult only the second) contains many valuable, and, what is deserving of special recognition in this department of research, trustworthy particulars. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Old English Grammar and Exercise Book With Inflections, Syntax, Selections for Reading, and Glossary Only the essentials, therefore, are treated in this work, which is planned more as a foundation for the study of Modern English grammar, of historical English grammar, and of the principles of English etymology, than as a gen eral introduction to Germanic philology. Book Synopsis A Critical Bibliography of Old English Syntax by : Bruce Mitchell
Download or read book A Critical Bibliography of Old English Syntax written by Bruce Mitchell and published by Wiley-Blackwell. This book was released on 1991-01-15 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work supplements the author's two-volume Old English Syntax (Oxford: Clarendon Press, 1985). It contains what is intended to be a bibliography complete to the end of 1984, of books, doctoral dissertations, articles, notes and reviews, on the syntax of Old English, with cross-references and with comments on items other than reviews; a subject index thereto; and the index of authors and reviewers which is (by design) missing in Old English Syntax but which gives references to both books. It provides an introduction, a section dealing with general works, eleven chapters which parallel those in Old English Syntax, and three appendixes which include inter alia addenda and corrigenda to Old English Syntax. All items other than reviews are allotted a number and some important post-1984 publications are included. There are some 1150 numbered items, later additions being marked A or B. The bias of previous work is demonstrated by the fact that over 45% of these are on chapter II, "The Parts of Speech and their Functions". Three categories are marked by symbols: the first indicates items which can now safely be disregarded, the second those discussed and evaluated in Old English Syntax, and the third those written from a "modern linguistic" point of view. There are deliberate omissions: no reviews are listed for items 1-50A (bibliographies, dictionaries, and grammars) or for collections from which individual items are cited, and abstracts of conference papers are excluded. Items concerned with prefixes and "phrasal verbs" (OES, sections 1060-80) and with element order (OES, sections 3887-951) have been divided into appropriate groups without critical comments for individual items. The word "critical" in the title reflects the fact that the author's overwhelming loyalty is to Old English Syntax and to users of this book, not to the writers whose work he discusses.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Historical Outlines of English Syntax I gratefully acknowledge my obligations to several eminent English scholars for repeated advice and valuable suggestions. Of these, Dr. F urnivall has the greatest claim on my gratitude. It was he who suggested to me the idea of working into their present English shape the materials which he knew I had been collecting for years, and it is through his help and untiring kindness that I have been able to overcome the many difficulties which naturally stood in my way. The quotations in my book will show what it owes to the Early English Text Society, a Society which has at last made possible a real study of the history of English, a Society which has earned the right to ten times the support it gets from English-speaking folk. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Principles of English Syntax This little book appears in response to many urgent requests from friends who, at some time, have been under the author's tuition or supervision, and who believe, with him, that instruction in English grammar may be much simplified; that often too much time is spent in going over unimportant details in parsing and analysis; and that the ability to illustrate synthetically every principle of syntax, and to correct any violation thereof, is of greater value than is generally considered. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Studies in English Syntax It remains for the author to thank his critics, friendly and otherwise, for their comments on the first two papers as originally published. He would not be understood as underrating the service of statistics in syntax; but, believing as he does, that syntax is the autobiography of language, he believes more in weighing than in counting. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Grammatic Guide: Or Common School Grammar IN presenting this volume to the Public, the Author has no apologies to make. It is almost the offspring of necessity, having grown out of the course the Author has pursued in teaching English Grammar for some time. No work was found embracing his views of the subject but this alone would not have called forth this volume. It was the order in which our text books on English Grammar are arranged, that caused the great difficulty. Book Synopsis An Anglo-Saxon Primer by : Henry Sweet
Download or read book An Anglo-Saxon Primer written by Henry Sweet and published by . This book was released on 2016-06-27 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Anglo-Saxon Primer: With Grammar, Notes, and Glossary The want of an introduction to the study of old-english has long been felt. Vernon's anglo-saxon Guide was an admirable book for its time, but has long been completely antiquated. 'i was therefore obliged to make my Anglo Saxon Reader a somewhat unsatisfactory compromise be tween an elementary primer and a manual for advanced students, but I always looked forward to producing, a strictly elementary book like the present one, which would enable me to give the larger one a more scientific character, and would at the same time serve as an introduction to it. Meanwhile, however, Professor Earle has brought out his Book for the beginner in anglo-saxon. But this work is quite unsuited to serve as an introduction to my Reader, and will be found to differ so totally in plan and execution from the present one as to preclude all idea of rivalry on my part. We work on lines which instead of clashing can only diverge more and more. My main principle has been to make the book the easiest possible introduction to the study of old-english.
