Even before Tryoon's ruthless suppression 1of the Regulators, many people were pressing westward. Missionaries from the Sandy Creek Association came into these areas quite early. In 1759 Elder Philip Mulky led a group of thirteen people from the Deep River Church, which belonged to the Sandy Creek Association, and organized a church in the Broad River section Of South Carolina. In two years this church grew to a member ship of 104. Then the group that organized this church moved on 100 miles southward and established a work at Fair Forest near the pres ent town of Union, South Carolina. This church grew in membership to 167 m ten years The growth in membership of these churches ln dicates the strength of this early westward migration. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the ninth book in the Looking Back series. It consists of stories taken from the Keowee Courier’s special Walhalla centennial edition in 1950, other stories, and highlights for the years 1956, 1986, 1996, and 2006. It is the author’s hope that these books will bring back some nostalgic memories for longtime residents and provide some historical insight for younger people and newcomers to the area. The Keowee Courier was founded in 1849. Sadly, it was recently closed down, with the final issue coming out on March 27, 2019. Thus, it had been in continuous publication for 170 years except for two or three years during the Civil War.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An analysis that challenges the conventional Christian hierarchy of John the Baptist and Jesus of Nazareth While the Christian tradition has subordinated John the Baptist to Jesus of Nazareth, John himself would likely have disagreed with that ranking. In this eye-opening new book, John the Baptist in History and Theology, Joel Marcus makes a powerful case that John saw himself, not Jesus, as the proclaimer and initiator of the kingdom of God and his own ministry as the center of God's saving action in history. Although the Fourth Gospel has the Baptist saying, "He must increase, but I must decrease," Marcus contends that this and other biblical and extrabiblical evidence reveal a continuing competition between the two men that early Christians sought to muffle. Like Jesus, John was an apocalyptic prophet who looked forward to the imminent end of the world and the establishment of God's rule on earth. Originally a member of the Dead Sea Sect, an apocalyptic community within Judaism, John broke with the group over his growing conviction that he himself was Elijah, the end-time prophet who would inaugurate God's kingdom on earth. Through his ministry of baptism, he ushered all who came to him—Jews and non-Jews alike—into this dawning new age. Jesus began his career as a follower of the Baptist, but, like other successor figures in religious history, he parted ways from his predecessor as he became convinced of his own centrality in God's purposes. Meanwhile John's mass following and apocalyptic message became political threats to Herod Antipas, who had John executed to abort any revolutionary movement. Based on close critical-historical readings of early texts—including the accounts of John in the Gospels and in Josephus's Antiquities—as well as parallels from later religious movements, John the Baptist in History and Theology situates the Baptist within Second Temple Judaism and compares him to other apocalyptic thinkers from ancient and modern times. It concludes with thoughtful reflections on how its revisionist interpretations might be incorporated into the Christian faith.

Hatch offers a provocative reassessment of religion and culture in the early days of the American republic, arguing that during this period American Christianity was democratized and common people became powerful actors on the religious scene. Hatch examines five distinct traditions or mass movements that emerged early in the nineteenth century£the Christian movement, Methodism, the Baptist movement, the black churches, and the Mormons£showing how all offered compelling visions of individual potential and collective aspiration to the unschooled and unsophisticated" -- Publisher description.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The intimate personal journals of two occultists practising western magick to achieve “The Great Work” (also known as “awakening” or “enlightenment”). With its humour, honesty, and down-to-earth approach, extending beyond the cult following it gained after its original publication in the late noughties, The Baptist's Head Compendium has proved itself a seminal text and indispensable guide to anyone suspicious of or disillusioned by magick purely as a tool for personal power or material gain. Sharing the details of their discoveries – and mistakes – in the process of making them, Chapman and Barford demonstrate how magick is a genuine spiritual tradition leading to enlightenment. They have their minds blown and the strangest experiences of their lives! By holding nothing back, but sharing all results and methods, the reader is equipped to embark on their own exploration of magick as a path to spiritual awakening. Originally published as a trilogy, but long since out-of-print, these books are now available for the first time in a single volume, revised and updated with new introductions by the authors.
