Book excerpt: The Dutch economy is characterized by substantial financial balance sheets in the private sector. Uncommonly large gross financial assets and liabilities are found in the financial sector, whereas households own significant net financial wealth. The large gross financial assets and liabilities reflect a dominant role of multinational corporations (MNCs). Despite their size, these financial positions have not brought significant financial stability risks to the country. On the other hand, Dutch households’ long balance sheets have been associated with depressed consumption and volatile real estate investment, which has probably exacerbated the cyclicality of the economy. The expected reform of the pension system is likely to change the way household balance sheets interact with private consumption.

Book excerpt: Oatil the early 1970s monetary econometrics was virtually unexplored territory in the Netherlands. The Bank's econometric research, which I have had the privilege to direct since 1971, sought to map this territory gradually and thus to obtain the el ements for building a monetary model for the Netherlands. As regards the research strategy, I opted for the performance of studies on specific aspects. The quarterly model MORKMON presented in this monograph may be regarded as the conclusion of this research programme. When building the model and writing this monograph, I made heavy and unre mitting demands on the staff of the Econometric Research and Special Studies Department. lowe a debt of gratitude to them all. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research Paper (postgraduate) from the year 2008 in the subject Business economics - Banking, Stock Exchanges, Insurance, Accounting, grade: A, University of Amsterdam, language: English, abstract: Since January first, 2005, IFRS is mandatory for the financial reporting of all listed companies within the European Union. This is in order to increase comparability, improve transparency and increase the quality of financial reporting (EC Regulation No. 1606/2002). However, although it is the objective of the European Union to become more united, there are significant differences in the backgrounds of the European countries. This research analyzes cross-country differences in disclosure in the balance sheets of companies, based on the level of enforcement, the prior accounting system and the legal system. The sample consists of 170 companies from France, Germany, the Netherlands, Spain and the United Kingdom. The variables are based on the recognition materiality concept and indicate the amount of detail in the disclosure in the balance sheets. The recognition materiality concept provides a limit below which disclosure is considered not material, based on the size and therefore is an indication for the amount of detail. The results indicate that the legal system has the strongest influence on the disclosure in balance sheets. Companies from common law countries provide significant more detailed balance sheet accounts in their annual reports, than companies from code law countries.

Balance sheet analysis captures the role that financial frictions and mismatches play in creating fragility and amplifying shocks. This is key to understanding the macroeconomic outlook, identifying vulnerabilities, and tracing the transmission of potential shocks and policies. This paper reviews the use of balance sheet analysis in the Fund’s bilateral surveillance and introduces some practical examples of how it can be deepened. Recent evaluations of IMF surveillance––including the 2014 TSR––have emphasized the importance of strengthening balance sheet analysis and coverage of macro-financial issues. This paper is a first step that highlights useful examples of such analysis conducted by staff over the last decade, documents the data and tools that have been used, and mentions some limitations. In addition, it discusses recent improvements in the coverage and quality of balance sheet data through initiatives launched in the wake of the global crisis, as well as key remaining gaps, addressing which requires international collaboration.

Book excerpt: The Dutch economy was more resilient than the average Euro area economy in 2020 owing in part to a high rate of digitalization of activities that allowed a large share of the work force to work remotely, while the strong policy response mitigated the impact of containment measures. A strong recovery is underway, with pre-pandemic GDP level to be exceeded in 2021:Q4, and the labor market has tightened considerably. The economy is forecast to grow by 4.0 percent in 2021 and 3.3 percent in 2022, on the back of strong consumption and investment, supported by increasing coverage of vaccines. Near-term risks to the outlook are roughly balanced, driven by the uncertain trajectory of the pandemic on the downside, while a fuller than expected drawdown of savings accumulated in the pandemic would further support domestic demand and growth. Further out, real estate market developments present additional risks.

The book includes papers on theoretical, empirical and institutional aspects of monetary economics. Each chapter displays a concern with policy in the monetary sphere, both with regards to macroeconomic questions of monetary and fiscal management, and issues of policy at the microeconomic level towards financial institutions and markets. In doing so, the book highlights the importance of monetary economics in policy issues. Advances in Monetary Economics has enduring relevance for those with an interest in the history and development of monetary economics.

Book excerpt: The Netherlands FSAP focused on three cross-cutting themes—housing, non-banks, and climate risks—while carrying out a comprehensive review of financial sector oversight. The FSAP reviewed the resilience of the Dutch financial system against a set of conjunctural and structural challenges to the economy: the conjunctural challenges included slowing economic growth amid tighter financial conditions, elevated housing prices, large and interconnected nonbanks with major pension reforms underway, and the shift in securities markets trading from London to Amsterdam since Brexit, which raised Amsterdam to systemic importance for the euro area (EA); and the structural challenges focused on climate issues, including climate physical risks associated with roughly a quarter of the country being below sea level, and nature-related transition risks from an uncertain policy path to bring down nitrogen depositions to contain biodiversity loss and comply with European Union (EU) Directives.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Coordination and Growth: Essays in Honour of Simon K. Kuipers, addresses a rich variety of coordination issues in macroeconomics. It contains detailed studies in economic policy, monetary economics, and growth theory and uses various methodologies to address the coordination issue: from a pure theoretical to an empirical econometric approach. It is stressed that modern macroeconomics should focus on coordination issues. Imperfections of various kinds are likely to lead to coordination failures, which can lead to large welfare losses. Macroeconomists should address the causes and implications of imperfections and failures. In this book attempts are made to increase our knowledge in this field. The book is a tribute to one of the leading Dutch macroeconomists, Simon K. Kuipers. Simon Kuipers shows a major interest in the theory of capital (following e.g. Harrod), growth theory (following Solow), monetary theory (following Tobin), and disequilibrium theory (following Malinvaud and Benassy). The lines of thought have in common that they use frictions to explain the functioning of a market economy. The nature of the frictions varies from pure quantity rationing, like in the Malinvaud analysis, to imperfect substitution of various capital goods (like in the vintage models or assets (in the general monetary equilibrium models proposed by Tobin). Kuipers is not only interested in pure theoretical contributions, he also stimulates econometric work in line with the Dutch tradition initiated by Tinbergen. His applied work relates to policy analysis and policy prescriptions in many fields, ranging from monetary economics to distortions in the labour market. Kuipers can be classified as a true Keynesian, although he admires neoclassical theory for its rigour and compactness. Better still, he is an eclectic economist with an open eye for the different schools of thought in macroeconomics.

Book excerpt: Demonstrating that there are (superior) alternatives to the modern macroeconomic mainstream and its DSGE (dynamic stochastic general equilibrium) models, this book presents the cutting edge in macroeconomic modelling, economic policy, and methodology from the perspective of heterodox economic thinking. The first part of the book explores methodological issues, advocating for a stronger ethical consideration in macroeconomics and for the adoption of a strategy of pluralism to ensure that macroeconomic theory is capable of adapting to real-world issues. The second part highlights recent trends in empirical Stock-Flow Consistent models by collecting a group of the most well-developed empirical models of five different economies: the Danish, the Dutch, the French, the Italian, and the Argentinian models. In all five cases, the models are used to discuss various policy aspects of the individual economies. Finally, the book explores issues of macroeconomic policy which are largely neglected by mainstream economists including financial (in)stability and macro imbalances. The book emphasizes the need for investigating sectoral balances, which are crucial elements for investigating imbalances from the heterodox perspective. This book will be of significant interest to students and scholars of macroeconomics, economic modelling, economic methodology and heterodox economics more broadly.

Book excerpt: This paper introduces concepts of public sector balance sheet (PSBS) strength, taking into account different aspects of what governments own in addition to what they owe. It develops measures of PSBS strength and investigates their macroeconomic implications. Empirical estimations show that in their pricing of sovereign bonds, financial markets account for government assets and net worth in addition to their liabilities. Furthermore, economies with stronger public sector balance sheets experience shallower recessions and recover faster in the aftermath of economic downturns. This faster return to growth can be explained by the greater space for countercyclical fiscal policy in countries with stronger balance sheets.
