In a manual designed to help police chiefs and sheriffs control drug abuse, the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP) stated unequivocally its belief in?a significant though complex? relationship between drug abusers and criminal offenders. Change one group, IACP proposed, and you change the other:?If there is a reduction in the number of people who abuse drugs in your community, there will be a reduction in the commission of certain types of crime in your community.?

Book excerpt: "Towards a Livable Life: A 21st Century Agenda for Social Work explores many of today's most critical issues facing America and the profession of social work. A wide range of leading social work scholars have been brought together to explore and provide innovative solutions to these societal issues. The book is organized around ten key topics. They include reducing health disparities; alleviating poverty; confronting discrimination; addressing inequality; building assets for lower income populations; preventing child maltreatment, fostering civic engagement; building healthy communities; achieving environmental justice; and engaging older adults. Tying the book together across each of these chapters is a foundational idea - that the focus of today's social work must be to enable every individual to achieve what is referred to as a livable life. A livable life is one in which individuals are able to thrive and develop in order to reach their full potential and capacity. Whether the concern is with the household, community, or society at large, striving toward conditions in which all members of these groups can reach their full potential is paramount. It is argued that achieving such a goal must be the ultimate challenge for social work in the 21st century"--

Book excerpt: In 2015-16, the Middle Level Education Research Special Interest Group (MLER SIG), an affiliate of the American Educational Research Association, undertook a collaborative project—the development of a new middle grades education research agenda. The purpose of the MLER SIG Research Agenda (Mertens et al., 2016) was to develop a set of questions that would guide the direction of middle grades education research. Ideally, this Research Agenda would serve to prompt discourse and generate research projects that could contribute to the middle grades knowledge base. Members of the MLER SIG identified eight research areas: (a) young adolescent development, (b) cultural responsiveness, (c) special populations, (d) educator development, (e) curriculum, (f) social and emotional learning, (g) digital technologies, and (h) school structures. This volume contains the extensive literature reviews and subsequent research questions for each of the research topics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the gender dimensions of a wide array of national and international security challenges. The volume examines gender dynamics in ten issue areas in both the traditional and human security sub-fields: armed conflict, post-conflict, terrorism, military organizations, movement of people, development, environment, humanitarian emergencies, human rights, governance. The contributions show how gender affects security and how security problems affect gender issues. Each chapter also examines a common set of key factors across the issue areas: obstacles to progress, drivers of progress and long-term strategies for progress in the 21st century. The volume develops key scholarship on the gender dimensions of security challenges and thereby provides a foundation for improved strategies and policy directions going forward. The lesson to be drawn from this study is clear: if scholars, policymakers and citizens care about these issues, then they need to think about both security and gender. This will be of much interest to students of gender studies, security studies, human security and International Relations in general.
