Medin conducted bird censuses along an elevational gradient (5,250 to 11,400 feet) near and on Wheeler Peak of east-central Nevada. Twenty years later we conducted bird censuses on seven of his 12 plots. Data from the bristlecone pine--Pinus longaeva--plot were collected in 1981 but not published (data on file with the Great Basin National Park). Data for the remaining six plots were collected in 1982 and published. In general, all 2002 bird counts from the seven study plots recorded substantially fewer numbers of total birds and, with the exception of the bristlecone pine and alpine study plots, recorded fewer bird species as compared to Medin's counts of 1981 and 1982. Total numbers of birds counted in the 70 visits (10 census visits for seven study plots) to all study plots for 1981 and 1982 was 5,034. This compares to 1,930 for 2002, or a reduction of 3,104 birds--a 62 percent reduction. Total number of bird species sighted in 1981 and 1982 was 83 compared to 75 in 2002, or a reduction of eight. Sixty-three species of birds were common to the 1981/1982, and the 2002 censuses. Twenty species of birds were sighted in 1981 and 1982 that were not sighted in 2002, and 12 species were sighted in 2002 that were not recorded in 1981 and 1982.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Among the crucial problems that confront mankind today are those associated with a degraded environment. This book examines the extent to which warfare and other military activities contribute to such degradation. The military capability to damage the environment and to cause ecological disruption has escalated, and there is no sign that the level of conflict in the world is decreasing. The military use and abuse of each of the several major global habitats -- temperate, tropical, desert, arctic, insular, and oceanic -- are evalusated separately in the light of the civil use and abuse of that habitat"--Dust jacket.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "You can't really know the place where you live until you know the shapes and origins of the land around you. To feel truly at home in the Bay Area, read Doris Sloan's intriguing stories of this region's spectacular, quirky landscapes."—Hal Gilliam, author of Weather of the San Francisco Bay Region "This is a fascinating look at some of the world's most complex and engaging geology. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in an understanding of the beautiful landscape and dynamic geology of the Bay Area."—Mel Erskine, geological consultant "This accessible summary of San Francisco Bay Area geology is particularly timely. We are living in an age where we must deal with our impact on our environment and the impact of the environment on us. Earthquake hazards, and to a lesser extent landslide hazards, are well known, but the public also needs to be aware of other important engineering and environmental impacts and geologic resources. This book will allow Bay Area residents to make more intelligent decisions about the geological issues affecting their lives."—John Wakabayashi, geological consultant

Book Synopsis The Conservation of Cave 85 at the Mogao Grottoes, Dunhuang by : Neville Agnew

This book was released on 2014-02-01 with total page 476 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Mogao Grottoes, a World Heritage Site in northwestern China, are located along the ancient caravan routes—collectively known as the Silk Road—that once linked China with the West. Founded by a Buddhist monk in the late fourth century, Mogao flourished over the following millennium, as monks, local rulers, and travelers commissioned hundreds of cave temples cut into a mile-long rock cliff and adorned them with vibrant murals. More than 490 decorated grottoes remain, containing thousands of sculptures and some 45,000 square meters of wall paintings, making Mogao one of the world’s most significant sites of Buddhist art. In 1997 the Getty Conservation Institute, which had been working with the Dunhuang Academy since 1989, began a case study using the Late–Tang dynasty Cave 85 to develop a methodology that would stabilize the deteriorating wall paintings. This abundantly illustrated volume is the definitive report on the project, which was completed in 2010.
Book Synopsis The Great Basin by : Catherine S. Fowler
Download or read book The Great Basin written by Catherine S. Fowler and published by School for Advanced Research P. This book was released on 2008 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is about a place, the Great Basin of western North America, and about the lifeways of Native American people who lived there during the past 13,000 years. The authors highlight the ingenious solutions people devised to sustain themselves in a difficult environment. The Great Basin is a semiarid and often harsh land, but one with life-giving oases. As the weather fluctuated from year to year, and the climate from decade to decade or even from one millennium to the next, the availability of water, plants, and animals also fluctuated. Only people who learned the land intimately and could read the many signs of its changing moods were successful. The evidence of their success is often subtle and difficult to interpret from the few and fragile remains left behind for archaeologists to discover. These ancient fragments of food and baskets, hats and hunting decoys, traps and rock art and the lifeways they reflect are the subject of this well-illustrated book.
