Book excerpt: Do you like debating religious issues? If so, this book of poems will provide you with oodles of debating ammunition. The poems are short, sharp, accessible, sometimes funny, sometimes quirky, sometimes poignant. If you're already an atheist, then these poems will strengthen your non-belief and maybe even highlight issues and arguments that you haven't considered before. If you are a theist (a believer) the poems will challenge your views. The more fundamentalist your views, the more you will be challenged. The poems are not intended to convert the deeply indoctrinated, but if you are currently sitting on the fence, this book will pull you towards the atheist side.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Atheist: An Original Poem The Atheist. Canto I. His life was in the evening shadows now, His outward form to set, his soul to rise; And, by the wrinkles on his jaded brow, 'Twas visible in life's bold enterprise He had not let his days pass by for nought, But seized the time, and for earth's knowledge sought. He'd read of all the pomp of Syria's kings, How they had flourished in the days gone by; But all their glory now in memory sings, Only the ruined city now is nigh; All else has fled - pride, pomp are in the dust; So perish all who but in self have trust. It deals not only with the mystical but even day to day events like falling in love, being mindful of one's diet, the political atmpsphere and dealing with the loss of a loved one. Each poem stands on it's own and also collectively shines together and this is what makes this book a beautiful collection. From the Tavern of Hafiz, to the Dervish of Rumi, to the Mystery School of Kabir, you feel the directness and awareness of poetry can still bring transformation in this wonderful collection. The beauty of this book is that it doesnt matter who or what your believe in, if you are an atheist or agnostic, these poems are of a universal appeal. It asks the reader to be open-minded so we can explore consciousness with a heartfelt discussion. It is not about fancy words or fancy logic but about meeting minds to create a harmonious relationship with each other.

Book excerpt: FOLKS FAMILIAR WITH THE TEXT OF THIS BOOK recommend thinking persons read this book. The author's thoughts are unique, engaging, and needed, especially in the insane world we are currently living in. Individuals, of all stripes, need to read and understand what the author is revealing to them. Someone, somewhere, is having doubts about the way they were brought up and programmed to believe in religion, God, and all other such "tales." This book is a breath of fresh air, with dozens of reasons why individuals are correctly justified in attempting to break out of that programmed spell, that internal nagging about sin, coupled with religion's fanciful infections it has infused them with. This book may help break the mental yoke they are needlessly burdened with and help them move forward to fulfill a greater, (your) self-destiny. The author's writing style is educational, informative, easy to read, and to understand. It expresses a positive, yet analytical viewpoint, that reasons out the criticisms posted against religious orthodoxies. The author does not attempt to bash anyone or any religion by analyzing the content and context of what they present as truth, or even the existence of the God sapients created centuries ago. The author simply points out how religion and related fictional persons known as "saints" came about, and how it was thought all else came to be, when it wasn't, or didn't. The author points out the horrible relationship early humans thought they had with their God, and always ended up blaming themselves as the reason they fell so frequently to His punishments. When many people did not want to worship as the programmed (gullibles) did, nor believe as they did, the programmed looked for an enforcement tool, and thought they found it, and called it "hell." As the author notes, EVERYTHING IN EXISTENCE DIES, and so will religion and the God notion. In addition to other musings, individuals are given new ways to think about reality, what it really is and is not. What it is not is fantasy. Individuals need not fear, nor go about as fear-based humans, because of their prior programming; just go about as seekers of truth, enjoying what that endeavor will bring, to each individual's mind.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For nearly thirty-five years Julian Mason's The Poems of Phillis Wheatley (1966) has been the standard edition of the poems and letters of this young black poet of eighteenth-century Boston. This new edition has been extensively revised in light of Wheatley scholarship since its publication. It has been expanded to include all of the fifty-six poems and twenty-two letters now known to be by Wheatley, the significant variants of the poems, and the four Proposals for publication of her works, all of them annotated. This edition contains the recently discovered poem "Ocean," new information about Wheatley's library (including a southern connection), a more accurate reading of a letter central to understanding the response to her 1772 Proposals, new variants of two poems, and a new reading of her George Washington poem. By going back to the original manuscripts (and to first printings when the manuscripts are not extant), Mason has provided the fullest and most accurate edition of Wheatley's poems and letters yet produced. The new index and bibliography assure the volume's usefulness for the scholar, the student, and the general reader.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Romantic Atheism explores the links between English Romantic poetry and the first burst of outspoken atheism in Britain from the 1780s onwards. Martin Priestman examines the work of Blake, Coleridge, Wordsworth, Shelley, Byron and Keats in their most intellectually radical periods, establishing the depth of their engagement with such discourses, and in some cases their active participation. Equal attention is given to less canonical writers: such poet-intellectuals as Erasmus Darwin, Sir William Jones, Richard Payne Knight and Anna Laetitia Barbauld, and controversialists including Holbach, Volney, Paine, Priestley, Godwin, Richard Carlile and Eliza Sharples (these last two in particular representing the close links between punishably outspoken atheism and radical working-class politics). Above all, the book conveys the excitement of Romantic atheism, whose dramatic appeals to new developments in politics, science and comparative mythology lend it a protean energy belied by the common and more recent conception of 'loss of faith'.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: David Martin was one of the world’s leading commentators on secularization theory. He was also a committed and lifelong reader of English poetry. Christianity and ‘The World’ develops Martin’s argument against simplistic secularization narratives with reference to the history of poetry, a topic with which few social theorists have been concerned. Martin shows the enduring but ever-changing centrality of Christian thought and practice, in its many different forms, to English poetry. Always mindful that the most important aspects of poetry’s history can be captured only by attending to the minutest particulars of individual poems and poets, Martin’s study sheds unexpected light on a wide range of English poets, from Spenser and Shakespeare to T.S. Eliot and Geoffrey Hill. The result is a study at once informed by an authoritative sociological perspective on secularization and richly coloured by the singular intensity of Martin’s own reading life.
