Download or read book Smart Grids written by David Bakken and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2017-12-19 with total page 470 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The utilization of sensors, communications, and computer technologies to create greater efficiency in the generation, transmission, distribution, and consumption of electricity will enable better management of the electric power system. As the use of smart grid technologies grows, utilities will be able to automate meter reading and billing and consumers will be more aware of their energy usage and the associated costs. The results will require utilities and their suppliers to develop new business models, strategies, and processes. With an emphasis on reducing costs and improving return on investment (ROI) for utilities, Smart Grids: Clouds, Communications, Open Source, and Automation explores the design and implementation of smart grid technologies, considering the benefits to consumers as well as businesses. Focusing on industrial applications, the text: Provides a state-of-the-art account of the smart grid Explains how smart grid technologies are currently being used Includes detailed examples and test cases for real-life implementation Discusses trade-offs associated with the utilization of smart grid technologies Describes smart grid simulation software and offers insight into the future of the smart grid The electric power grid is in the early stages of a sea of change. Nobody knows which business models will survive, but companies heeding the lessons found in Smart Grids: Clouds, Communications, Open Source, and Automation might just increase their chances for success.
Book Synopsis Underground Cable Thermal Backfill by : S.A. Boggs
Download or read book Underground Cable Thermal Backfill written by S.A. Boggs and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Underground Cable Thermal Backfill documents the proceedings of the ""Symposium on Underground Cable Thermal Backfill,"" held in Toronto, Canada, 17-18 September 1981. The symposium brought together research, design, and installation engineers from utilities, cable manufacturers, and universities to present and discuss developments in the field. The contributions of researchers at the symposium are organized into five chapters. Chapter 1 presents an overview of the state-of-the-art of cable backfill materials and soil thermal property measurements. The papers in Chapter 2 deal with developments in cable backfill materials. These include materials stabilized with moisture substitutes, pumpable materials, and materials stabilized with bound water. Chapter 3 covers thermal property measurements of soils and backfills. Through the automation of measurements and analysis using microprocessor based instruments and better control of experimental conditions, substantial improvements have been made in the area of measurement technology. Chapter 4 reports developments in the study of soil thermal stability and the implication thereof for thermal cable design. Chapter 5 discusses various aspects of thermal cable design, including methods for incorporating historical weather records to predict worst case soil and backfill thermal conductivities. This volume should serve as a useful introduction to the subject of cable thermal design for engineers involved in underground transmission and distribution systems.

Book Synopsis Electrical Design of a 400 kV Composite Tower by : Tohid Jahangiri
Download or read book Electrical Design of a 400 kV Composite Tower written by Tohid Jahangiri and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-04-23 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents an innovative concept for designing a 400 kV double circuit composite tower. The major challenges encountered by the authors in the electrical design process of the composite tower are addressed. They concern material selection for the full composite cross-arm core, electrical insulation of the cross-arm, electrical dimensioning of the full composite tower, lightning shielding performance and failure of the full composite tower. The electric field performance of the tower’s insulation has been investigated theoretically by using finite element method and experimentally by testing different fiber reinforced polymers as candidates. The book reports in detail those finite element simulations and tests, together with the authors’ recommendations on the most suitable materials and manufacturing process as well as conductor clamp designs for the cross-arm. Another important issue of the full composite tower, which concerns the environmental aspects of the full composite tower, has also been evaluated. This book offers a timely reference guide on a highly innovative topic, addressing researchers working on power transmission system both in industry and academia.
Book Synopsis Ensuring Supply Reliability and Grid Stability in a 100% Renewable Electricity Sector in the Faroe Islands by : Helma Maria Tróndheim
Download or read book Ensuring Supply Reliability and Grid Stability in a 100% Renewable Electricity Sector in the Faroe Islands written by Helma Maria Tróndheim and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-05-19 with total page 221 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers a comprehensive study concerning the reliability of renewable electricity production in the Faroe Islands. The first part reports on a RoadMap with investments in generation, storage and transmission capacity. Multiple scenarios, considering different technologies, are analysed. Practical constraints like the local resource potential, power plant locations and sizes are discussed, as well as the potential of tidal power. The second part of the book describes dynamic simulations studies carried out to investigate grid stability of the power system on the isolated island of Suðuroy. The available information about governor and automatic voltage regulators of the synchronous generators was very limited, therefore different approaches were combined to parameterise and validate the dynamic models. All in all, this book offers extensive information concerning the transition of the Faroese power system into a 100% renewable system. It is practice-oriented, and describes methods that can be applied to other power systems as well.

Book Synopsis Grid-Connected Renewable Energy Sources by : Jesus C. Hernández
Download or read book Grid-Connected Renewable Energy Sources written by Jesus C. Hernández and published by MDPI. This book was released on 2021-08-31 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The use of renewable energy sources (RESs) is a need of global society. This editorial, and its associated Special Issue “Grid-Connected Renewable Energy Sources”, offers a compilation of some of the recent advances in the analysis of current power systems that are composed after the high penetration of distributed generation (DG) with different RESs. The focus is on both new control configurations and on novel methodologies for the optimal placement and sizing of DG. The eleven accepted papers certainly provide a good contribution to control deployments and methodologies for the allocation and sizing of DG.
