Book Synopsis Kinematic Labs with Mobile Devices by : Jason M. Kinser
Download or read book Kinematic Labs with Mobile Devices written by Jason M. Kinser and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As technology advances education has expanded from the classroom into other formats including on-line delivery, flipped classrooms and hybrid delivery. Congruent with these is the need for alternative formats for laboratory experiences. This explosion in technology has also placed in the hands of a majority of students a sensor suite tucked neatly into their smart phones or smart tablets. The popularity of these devices provides a new avenue for the non-traditional kinematic lab experience. This book addresses this issue by providing 13 labs spanning the common topics in the first semester of university level physics. Each lab is designed to use only the student's smart phone, laptop and items easily found in big-box stores or a hobby shop. Each lab contains theory, set-up instructions and basic analysis techniques. All of these labs can be performed outside of the traditional university lab setting and initial costs averaging less than $8 per student per lab excluding thesmart phone and laptop.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This publication breaks new ground. It is the first document to provide extensive life-span assessments (for insurance purposes) for a wide range of building components which are classified within the concept of quality specifications. A further benefit is that it does not seek to be prescriptive. It indicative 'benchmarks' against which new or differing specifications can be assessed, in that sense it is both robust and flexible.

Book Synopsis Quantitative Core Level Photoelectron Spectroscopy by : Juan A Colón Santana
Download or read book Quantitative Core Level Photoelectron Spectroscopy written by Juan A Colón Santana and published by Morgan & Claypool Publishers. This book was released on 2016-01-01 with total page 151 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Photoemission (also known as photoelectron) spectroscopy refers to the process in which an electron is removed from a specimen after the atomic absorption of a photon. The first evidence of this phenomenon dates back to 1887 but it was not until 1905 that Einstein offered an explanation of this effect, which is now referred to as ""the photoelectric effect"". Quantitative Core Level Photoelectron Spectroscopy: A Primer tackles the pragmatic aspects of the photoemission process with the aim of introducing the reader to the concepts and instrumentation that emerge from an experimental approach. The basic elements implemented for the technique are discussed and the geometry of the instrumentation is explained. The book covers each of the features that have been observed in the X-ray photoemission spectra and provides the tools necessary for their understanding and correct identification. Charging effects are covered in the penultimate chapter with the final chapter bringing closure to the basic uses of the X-ray photoemission process, as well as guiding the reader through some of the most popular applications used in current research.

Book Synopsis Practical Machinery Safety by : David Macdonald
Download or read book Practical Machinery Safety written by David Macdonald and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2004-07-16 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Practical Machinery Safety aims to provide you with the knowledge to tackle machinery safety control problems at a practical level whilst achieving compliance with national and international standards. The book highlights the major international standards that are used to support compliance with EU regulations and uses these standards as a basis for the design procedures. It looks at the risk assessment processes used to identify hazards and to quantify the risks inherent in a machine. It introduces the concepts of safety categories as defined by standard EN954-1 (Safety of Machinery) and illustrates the principles of failsafe design, fault tolerance and self-testing. It also provides an introduction to machinery protection devices such as guards, enclosures with interlocks and guard-monitoring relays, locking systems, safety mats, photo-electric and electro-sensitive principles and the application of light curtains, a study of Safety Control System techniques, and introduces the principles of safety-certified PLCs. - Plan and implement safety systems that deliver a safe working environment and compliance with national and international standards - Apply simple risk assessments and hazard design methods to your own projects - Identify hazards that occur with machinery and know how to deal with them
Book Synopsis From Newton to Einstein by : F Todd Baker
Download or read book From Newton to Einstein written by F Todd Baker and published by Morgan & Claypool Publishers. This book was released on 2014-12-01 with total page 94 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From Newton to Einstein is a book devoted to classical mechanics. "Classical" here includes the theory of special relativity as well because, as argued in the book, it is essentially Newtonian mechanics extended to very high speeds. This information is expanded from the author's popular Q&A website, a site aimed primarily at general readers who are curious about how physics explains the workings of the world. Hence, the answers emphasize concepts over formalism, and the mathematics is kept to a minimum. Students new to physics will find discussion and quantitative calculations for areas often neglected in introductory courses (e.g. air drag and non-inertial frames). The author gives us a more intuitive approach to special relativity than normally taught in introductory courses. One chapter discusses general relativity in a completely non-mathematical way emphasizing the equivalence principle and the generalized principle of relativity; the examples in this chapter can offer a new slant on applications of classical mechanics. Another chapter is devoted to the physics of computer games, sci-fi, superheros, and super weapons for those interested in the intersection of popular culture and science. Professional scientists will find topics that they may find amusing and, in some cases, everyday applications that they had not thought of. Brief tutorials are given for essential concepts (e.g. Newton's laws) and appendices give technical details for the interested reader.
