Book excerpt: The Commission on Church and Country Life of the Federal Council of the Churches of Christ in America conducted the work whose results are summarized in this book. Several thousand persons assisted in collecting the data here given. Lists of churches were obtained from correspondents in every township in Ohio, and township maps were sent to them for marking the location of the churches. Ministers, clerks, and other officers of churches, district superintendents, and other denominational leaders gave indispensable information.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Simon Jenkins has travelled the length and breadth of England to select his thousand best churches. Organised by county, each church is described - often with delightful asides - and given a star-rating from one to five. All of the county sections are prefaced by a map locating each church, and lavishly illustrated with colour photos from the Country Life archive. Jenkins contends that these churches house a gallery of vernacular art without equal in the world. Here, he brings that museum to public attention.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: America's religious landscape is in flux. New churches are springing up and many older churches are redefining themselves to survive. At the forefront of this denominational free-for-all are evangelical "seeker" churches. These churches target "seekers"-individuals of any faith or denominational background who seek spiritual fulfillment but are not currently affiliated with any specific church. By focusing on this largely untapped group, seeker churches have become one of the fastest-growing religious movements in the country. In his study, Kimon Sargeant provides a sociological context for the rise of these churches by exploring the rituals, messages, strategies, and denominational functions of this emerging form of American evangelical Protestantism. Featuring live bands, professional lighting and sound systems, and multi-media presentations, seeker churches are attracting many people who have "dropped out" of organized religion. To broaden their appeal, they offer attenders advice on everyday issues ranging from relationships to finance. Sargeant focuses on the success of the Willow Creek Association, the seeker church association started by the Willow Creek Community Church near Chicago. With over 5,000 member churches, the seven-year old association has already outdistanced 90 percent of American denominations and is the leader of the seeker church movement. Through eyewitness accounts and careful research, Sargeant reveals the "seeker" movement to be a "reformation" of American Protestantism.

Experience the revolution for yourself and see why it has become the “new normal” for growing churches. A Multi-Site Church Roadtrip takes pastors, church leaders, and anyone who is interested on a tour of multi-site churches across America to see how those churches are handling the opportunities and challenges raised by this dynamic organizational model. Travel with tour guides Geoff Surratt, Greg Ligon, and Warren Bird, authors of The Multi-Site Church Revolution, and enjoy engaging and humorous on-site narratives that show you the creative ways churches of all kinds are expanding their impact through multiple locations. Hear the inside stories and learn about the latest developments. Find out firsthand how the churches in this book are broadening their options for evangelism, service, and outreach—while making better use of their ministry funds. Since each church on this tour is unique, you won’t find a cookie-cutter approach to ministry. Instead, you’ll gain some practical tools you can use to explore a multi-site direction at your own church.

Book excerpt: This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1922 edition. Excerpt: ...like one well-to-do taxi man, "do not worry," having laid aside a sum of "between $6,000 and $7,000 in two months." And what of the churches? In a good many cases they have been nearly wrecked. During the summer their pews have been filled with wealthy visitors. The resident congregation has been necessarily kept away from services to see that the guests' dinners are properly prepared. Different pastors give different versions of the effect upon their organizations. One pastor sighed and shook his head. "If the summer folks would stay at home," he said, "we might be able to manage the winter ones." On the other hand, a certain Episcopal rector remarked that if it were not for the summer people his church would have to close. In the words of Joseph Lincoln, the summer residents live on the lands about Lake George, and the "natives live on the summer residents." They depend on them not only for their daily bread, but for the support of their churches. On the surface the resort churches seem to be better off financially than those in non-resort communities. A good many churches do not make up their budgets until after the vacation season. Summer guests are, as a rule, regular attendants at services and liberal with their collections. In non-resort communities the churches raise seven-eighths of their funds by subscription. Those in resort centers depend largely on collections, more than a third of their money being raised by this means. The non-resort churches exceed the resort churches in average per capita contribution toward benevolences. The average per capita expenditure is $26.99 fr the resort church and only $21.94 in non-resort churches. Pastors' salaries in resort churches range from...
