Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Software engineering is understood as a broad term linking science, traditional en- neering, art and management and is additionally conditioned by social and external factors (conditioned to the point that brilliant engineering solutions based on strong science, showing artistic creativity and skillfully managed can still fail for reasons beyond the control of the development team). Modern software engineering needs a paradigm shift commensurate with a change of the computing paradigm from: 1. Algorithms to interactions (and from procedural to object-oriented programming) 2. Systems development to systems integration 3.Products to services Traditional software engineering struggles to address this paradigm shift to inter- tions, integration, and services. It offers only incomplete and disconnected methods for building information systems with fragmentary ability to dynamically accom- date change and to grow gracefully. The principal objective of contemporary software engineering should therefore be to try to redefine the entire discipline and offer a complete set of methods, tools and techniques to address challenges ahead that will shape the information systems of the future.

Book excerpt: For the ?fth time in its history, in cooperation with Springer-Verlag, the European C- ference on Object-Oriented Programming (ECOOP) conference series is glad to offer the object-oriented research community the ECOOP 2001 Workshop Reader, a c- pendium of workshop reports, panel transcripts, and poster abstracts pertaining to the ECOOP 2001 conference, held in Budapest from 18 to 22 June, 2001. ECOOP 2001 hosted 19 high-quality workshops covering a large spectrum of - search topics. The workshops attracted 460 participants on the ?rst two days of the conference. Originally 22 workshops were chosen from 26 proposals by a workshop selection committee, following a peer review process. Due to the overlaps in the areas of interest and the suggestions made by the committee six of the groups decided to merge their topicsintothreeworkshops.Thisbookcontainsinformationonthepanel, postersession, and 17 workshop reports, for which we have to thank our workshop organizers, who did a great job in preparing and formatting them. The reports are organized around the main line of discussion, comparing the - rious approaches and giving a summary on the debates. They also include the list of participants, af?liations, contact information, and the list of contributed position papers. Although they usually do not include abstracts or excerpts of the position papers, they do give useful references to other publications and websites, where more information may be found.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The International Conference on Computational Science (ICCS 2004) held in Krak ́ ow, Poland, June 6–9, 2004, was a follow-up to the highly successful ICCS 2003 held at two locations, in Melbourne, Australia and St. Petersburg, Russia; ICCS 2002 in Amsterdam, The Netherlands; and ICCS 2001 in San Francisco, USA. As computational science is still evolving in its quest for subjects of inves- gation and e?cient methods, ICCS 2004 was devised as a forum for scientists from mathematics and computer science, as the basic computing disciplines and application areas, interested in advanced computational methods for physics, chemistry, life sciences, engineering, arts and humanities, as well as computer system vendors and software developers. The main objective of this conference was to discuss problems and solutions in all areas, to identify new issues, to shape future directions of research, and to help users apply various advanced computational techniques. The event harvested recent developments in com- tationalgridsandnextgenerationcomputingsystems, tools, advancednumerical methods, data-driven systems, and novel application ?elds, such as complex - stems, ?nance, econo-physics and population evolution.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The idea that “measuring quality is the key to developing high-quality software systems” is gaining relevance. Moreover, it is widely recognised that the key to obtaining better software systems is to measure the quality characteristics of early artefacts, produced at the conceptual modelling phase. Therefore, improving the quality of conceptual models is a major step towards the improvement of software system development.Since the 1970s, software engineers had been proposing high quantities of metrics for software products, processes and resources but had not been paying any special attention to conceptual modelling. By the mid-1990s, however, the need for metrics for conceptual modelling had emerged. This book provides an overview of the most relevant existing proposals of metrics for conceptual models, covering conceptual models for both products and processes.

The book also includes a new field: research in web services and semantic web. This is a rapidly developing research area promising to give excellent practical outcome, and interesting for theoretically minded as well as for practically minded people. The largest part of the papers belongs to a traditional area of applications of artificial intelligence methods to various software engineering problems. Another traditional section is application of intelligent agents in software engineering. A separate section is devoted to interesting applications and special techniques related in one or another way to the topic of the conference."--Publisher's website.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: th DEXA 2001, the 12 International Conference on Database and Expert Systems Applications was held on September 3–5, 2001, at the Technical University of Munich, Germany. The rapidly growing spectrum of database applications has led to the establishment of more specialized discussion platforms (DaWaK conference, EC Web conference, and DEXA workshop), which were all held in parallel with the DEXA conference in Munich. In your hands are the results of much effort, beginning with the preparation of the submitted papers. The papers then passed through the reviewing process, and the accepted papers were revised to final versions by their authors and arranged with the conference program. All this culminated in the conference itself. A total of 175 papers were submitted to this conference, and I would like to thank all the authors. They are the real base of the conference. The program committee and the supporting reviewers produced altogether 497 referee reports, on average of 2.84 reports per paper, and selected 93 papers for presentation. Comparing the weight or more precisely the number of papers devoted to particular topics at several recent DEXA conferences, an increase can be recognized in the areas of XMS databases, active databases, and multi and hypermedia efforts. The space devoted to the more classical topics such as information retrieval, distribution and Web aspects, and transaction, indexing and query aspects has remained more or less unchanged. Some decrease is visible for object orientation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The explosive growth of application areas such as electronic commerce, ent- prise resource planning and mobile computing has profoundly and irreversibly changed our views on software systems. Nowadays, software is to be based on open architectures that continuously change and evolve to accommodate new components and meet new requirements. Software must also operate on di?- ent platforms, without recompilation, and with minimal assumptions about its operating environment and its users. Furthermore, software must be robust and ̈ autonomous, capable of serving a naive user with a minimum of overhead and interference. Agent concepts hold great promise for responding to the new realities of software systems. They o?er higher-level abstractions and mechanisms which address issues such as knowledge representation and reasoning, communication, coordination, cooperation among heterogeneous and autonomous parties, p- ception, commitments, goals, beliefs, and intentions, all of which need conceptual modelling. On the one hand, the concrete implementation of these concepts can lead to advanced functionalities, e.g., in inference-based query answering, tra- action control, adaptive work?ows, brokering and integration of disparate inf- mation sources, and automated communication processes. On the other hand, their rich representational capabilities allow more faithful and ?exible treatments of complex organizational processes, leading to more e?ective requirements an- ysis and architectural/detailed design.
