Book Synopsis The 21st North Carolina Infantry by : Lee W. Sherrill, Jr.
Download or read book The 21st North Carolina Infantry written by Lee W. Sherrill, Jr. and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2015-04-14 with total page 536 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 21st North Carolina Troops (11th North Carolina Volunteers) was one of only two Tar Heel Confederate regiments that in 1865 could boast "From Manassas to Appomattox." The 21st was the only North Carolina regiment with Stonewall Jackson during his 1862 Valley Campaign and remained with the same division throughout the war. It participated in every major battle fought by the Army of Northern Virginia except the 1864 Overland Campaign, when General Lee sent it to fight its own intense battles near New Bern and Plymouth. This book is written from the perspective of the 1,942 men who served in the regiment and is filled with anecdotal material gleaned from more than 700 letters and memoirs. In several cases it sheds new light on accepted but often incorrect interpretations of events. Names such as Lee, Jackson, Hoke, Trimble, Hill, Early, Ramseur and Gordon charge through the pages as the Carolina regiment gains a name for itself. Suffering a 50 percent casualty rate over the four years, only 67 of the 920 young men and boys who began the war surrendered to Grant at its end.

Book Synopsis No Gang War in '74 by : Samuel C. Say
Download or read book No Gang War in '74 written by Samuel C. Say and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2013-02-28 with total page 175 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Representative Chaka Fattah and Councilman Curtis Jones Jr. went through the House of Umoja and were witnesses to the transformational process of young people who identified with individual gangs. Many of these gangs were started in the fifties and expanded throughout the sixties. However in 1968 gang warfare became much more deadly. Once the body counts went up gangs wanted to even the score. It took two dedicated parents who were not only concerned about their own children but their community as well, to set in motion a transformational process which started with their own house and in five years ripped across the city. Through these well organized gangs young people had seen the mean things they could do to each other. David and Falaka Fattah showed them the beautiful things they could do, the importance of community and civic duty. They connected them with both family and African tradition. This is a story that must be told and cannot be forgotten.
Download or read book Farang written by Iain Corness and published by Maverick House . This book was released on 2015-01-07 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dr Iain Corness fell in love with Thailand on a holiday in 1975, and finally managed to move there permanently in 1997. As a settled farang, or foreigner, he enjoys a unique perspective on Thai life and all its eccentricities; looking in from the outside while also getting to see the things most foreigners don’t. His stories and anecdotes are full of the joys of life, and celebrate this exotic and exciting land in all its glory with painfully funny observations. From a date with a fortune teller to tales of a reincarnated squid, Corness revels in the chaos and charm of ‘the only country where you can be run over by a shop.’ This is a book to be enjoyed by tourists and Thais alike.
