Book excerpt: The profusion of literature on Muḥammad ʿAlī's Egypt (1805–1849) makes the Bāshā’s epoch significantly well-documented; however, one facet is perceptibly brushed out or rather overlooked. Published in 1945, Gaston Wiet’s Mohammed Ali et Les Beaux-Arts has been the only book deliberating the visual and artistic aspects of Muḥammad ʿAlī’s reign, and while it offers an extended survey of the Ottoman governor’s iconography and visual relics, the book wants the rudiments of critical analysis. The trivial number of works covering this facet of the Bāshā’s sovereignty has made it barely examined, rendering the research field with a significant epistemological gap, namely regarding art and historiography patronage for political triggers. Embarking from where Wiet's work has halted, this book attempts to critically analyze the artistic component of Muḥammad ʿAlī’s reign by dealing with the pictorial crops of the nineteenth century’s orientalist-travelers, assessing their role within the context of contemporaneous trends in Ottoman and European diplomacy and tracing Muḥammad ʿAlī’s early attempts for using pictorial propaganda and historiography in order to claim political legitimacy and to attain European recognition. The book conducts an in-depth analysis of the Bāshā’s historiographic making process with a focus on how text worked art and visual politics. The book takes an innovative and interdisciplinary approach, which commingles tools of visual analysis and contextual investigation, in its consideration of the aspects of Muḥammad ʿAlī Bāshā’s foreign policy, this book closely examines topics associated with cultural systems, modernization, traditionalism, and changeability in Egypt of the nineteenth century, while assessing the impact of global connectedness not only on Muslim cultures and societies but also on European public opinion through highlighting how Muslim rulers had adapted appealing themes and employed cultural magnets in their visual propaganda to fit within the pervasive international diplomatic trends.

Book excerpt: During the course of the 19th century, a relatively modern medium entered the private space of Iranian houses of the wealthy and became a popular feature of interior design in Persia. This was print media - lithographed images on paper and postcards - and their subject was European women. These idealised images adorned houses across the country throughout the Qajar period and this trend was particularly fashionable in Isfahan and mural decorations at the entrance gate of the Qaysarieh bazaar. The interest in images of Western women was an unusual bi-product of Iran's early political and cultural encounters with the West. In a world where women were rarely seen in public and, even then, were heavily veiled, the notion of European women dressed in - by Iranian standards - elegant and revealing clothing must have sparked much curiosity and some titillation among well-to-do merchants and aristocrats who felt the need to create some association, however remote, with these alien creatures. The introduction of such images began during the Safavid era in the 17th century with frescoes in royal palaces. This spread to other manifestations in the form of tile work and porcelain in the Qajar era, which became a testament to the popularity of this visual phenomenon among Iran's urban elite in the 19th and early 20th century. Parviz Tanavoli, the prominent Iranian artist and sculptor, here brings together the definitive collection of these unique images. Book excerpt: Accounts of paintings produced during the Mughal dynasty (1526–1857) tend to trace a linear, “evolutionary” path and assert that, as European Renaissance prints reached and influenced Mughal artists, these artists abandoned a Persianate style in favor of a European one. Kavita Singh counters these accounts by demonstrating that Mughal painting did not follow a single arc of stylistic evolution. Instead, during the reigns of the emperors Akbar and Jahangir, Mughal painting underwent repeated cycles of adoption, rejection, and revival of both Persian and European styles. Singh’s subtle and original analysis suggests that the adoption and rejection of these styles was motivated as much by aesthetic interest as by court politics. She contends that Mughal painters were purposely selective in their use of European elements. Stylistic influences from Europe informed some aspects of the paintings, including the depiction of clothing and faces, but the symbolism, allusive practices, and overall composition remained inspired by Persian poetic and painterly conventions. Closely examining magnificent paintings from the period, Singh unravels this entangled history of politics and style and proposes new ways to understand the significance of naturalism and stylization in Mughal art.
