Book Synopsis Thomas Hart Benton's America Today The Metropolitan Museum of Art Bulletin, v. 72, no. 3 (Winter, 2015) by : Randall R. Griffey
Download or read book Thomas Hart Benton's America Today The Metropolitan Museum of Art Bulletin, v. 72, no. 3 (Winter, 2015) written by Randall R. Griffey and published by Metropolitan Museum of Art. This book was released on 2015-03-16 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thomas Hart Benton is often recognized as the leader of the 1930s movement known as Regionalism, which celebrated rural life in the United States. However, he lived and worked primarily in New York from 1912 to 1935, one of the most vibrant and dynamic periods in the city’s history. It was also a critical time for Benton’s artistic development, as he gradually established and set on the course that would define his career, one characterized by a passionate commitment to public art, populist subject matter, and a distinctively expressive figurative style rooted predominantly in European Mannerism. The pinnacle of Benton’s New York years was the mural cycle he painted for the newly erected headquarters of the New School for Social Research at 66 West 12th Street, which opened to the public in January 1931. Called America Today, the mural — his first significant commission for an institution — raised Benton’s artistic stature not only in New York, but also nationwide, setting the stage for his appearance in December 1934 on the cover of Time magazine, the first time an artist was accorded that honor. This Bulletin reveals the many remarkable stories that America Today has to tell and presents new discoveries about Benton’s epic cycle. The essay and entries contained in these pages elucidate the mural’s rich content, particularly Benton’s celebration of the Machine Age and American “progress” in the 1920s.

Book Synopsis John Steuart Curry by : Patricia A. Junker
Download or read book John Steuart Curry written by Patricia A. Junker and published by Hudson Hills. This book was released on 1998 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John Steuart Curry: Inventing the Middle West is the first comprehensive study in more than fifty years of this member of the great triumvirate of American Regionalists: Thomas Hart Benton, Curry, and Grant Wood. It revives the reputation of one of the most important and controversial artists of the first half of the twentieth century, whose paintings of farm life in his native Kansas (including baptisms and tornados), of the circus, of American history, and of the American scene in general were dramatically eclipsed by the ascendancy of abstract art and the New York School at midcentury. 68 colour & 114 b/w illustrations
Book Synopsis Grant Wood's Secrets by : Sue Taylor
Download or read book Grant Wood's Secrets written by Sue Taylor and published by University of Virginia Press. This book was released on 2020-02-03 with total page 507 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Incorporating copious archival research and original close readings of American artist Grant Wood’s iconic as well as lesser-known works, Grant Wood’s Secrets reveals how his sometimes anguished psychology was shaped by his close relationship with his mother and how he channeled his lifelong oedipal guilt into his art. Presenting Wood’s abortive autobiography "Return from Bohemia" for the first time ever, Sue Taylor integrates the artist’s own recollections into interpretations of his art. As Wood dressed in overalls and boasted about his beloved Midwest, he consciously engaged in regionalist strategies, performing a farmer masquerade of sorts. In doing so, he also posed as conventionally masculine, hiding his homosexuality from his rural community. Thus, he came to experience himself as a double man. This book conveys the very real threats under which Wood lived and pays tribute to his resourceful responses, which were often duplicitous and have baffled art historians who typically take them at face value.

Book Synopsis Instruments, Measurement Principles and Communication Technologies for Downhole Drilling Environments by : Chinthaka P. Gooneratne
Download or read book Instruments, Measurement Principles and Communication Technologies for Downhole Drilling Environments written by Chinthaka P. Gooneratne and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-12-30 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a complete review of the unique instruments and the communication technologies utilized in downhole drilling environments. These instruments and communication technologies play a critical role in drilling hydrocarbon wells safely, accurately and efficiently into a target reservoir zone by acquiring information about the surrounding geological formations as well as providing directional measurements of the wellbore. Research into instruments and communication technologies for hydrocarbon drilling has not been explored by researchers to the same extent as other fields, such as biomedical, automotive and aerospace applications. Therefore, the book serves as an opportunity for researchers to truly understand how instruments and communication technologies can be used in a downhole environment and to provide fertile ground for research and development in this area. A look ahead, discussing other technologies such as micro-electromechanical-systems (MEMS) and fourth industrial revolution technologies such as automation, the industrial internet of things (IIoT), artificial intelligence, and robotics that can potentially be used in the oil/gas industry are also presented, as well as requirements still need to be met in order to deploy them in the field.
