Book excerpt: In today’s age of extraordinary technological development, the mass media industry must constantly innovate and adopt emerging concepts to keep up with the demand of online visibility and prominence. Interactivity is a distinguishing feature of the current online environment, and is a necessity in maintaining relevance in digital media sphere. The growing impact of new media technologies and the resulting pressure on mass media organizations to incorporate more audience involvement have made interactivity a particularly sought-after phenomenon throughout the industry. The prominence of online interactivity has resulted in anxiety throughout the mass media industry regarding the ways in which media organisations can engage with their audience and maintain a high level of traffic on their websites. Attaining these heights largely depends on the quality and nature of interactivity on a given site. This book provides insights into the interactivity basics of an ideal media website, and highlights the nature of interactivity in the Nigerian online media sphere vis-a-vis the basics of interactivity.

It is a pandemic, its negative impacts and corrosive character are harming us whether we are a victim, a bystander or professional tasked with public health and safety. Violence affects us regardless of class or social standing. For decades, celebrities and well-known public figures have taken to the media to share their own experiences with violence. This book spotlights the celebrities and their loved ones who have survived self-harm, bullying, intimate partner violence, sexual assault, family abuse, home invasion, gun violence, or police brutality. Violence prevention experts increasingly recognize the influence of celebrities and work with them to spread awareness. This collection of case studies aims to support this growing influence by documenting the effects of violence prevention through celebrity advocacy.

Book excerpt: This book presents a study of the news coverage of extended reality technologies (virtual, augmented and mixed reality; or XR) and how this news corresponds with the marketing of XR products. Focusing on a group of recently emerging technological products, the book offers in-depth analysis of the news coverage of XR technologies and explores the overlap between news discourse and promotional discourse by comparing the way these products are framed in the news and their marketing materials. Using both quantitative and qualitative data, it discusses the topics covered in XR news, as well as the sources used and the specific framing techniques that appear in both XR news and marketing materials. In addition to these findings, it also provides a set of frame categories that can be used by other researchers analysing the media coverage of emerging technologies. Ultimately arguing that the news represents XR in such a way that treats readers as consumers instead of citizens, prioritising the interests of XR companies rather than news audiences, this book will be of interest to students and researchers in media and communications, discourse studies, journalism, PR and marketing and innovation studies, as well as XR practitioners.

There are numerous publications and on-going research studies documenting the changes in our climate and potential for worsening shortages in our future. Meeting future potable water demands as communities continue to grow will rely heavily on using our existing water resources more efficiently. Preparing Urban Water Use Efficiency Plans provides detailed approaches to developing and implementing a water conservation plan. This book covers the broad spectrum of conservation planning for urban communities including achieving more efficiency from: Residential domestic uses Commercial and governmental facilities use Industrial uses Pricing Water Loss Control Programs The steps in the Guide clearly outline and provide sample calculations to aid determining which water use efficiency activities are financially justifiable to undertake. The end result is a plan that policy decision makers can adopt and fund, and that water service provider staff can implement to help increase their community's water reliability. It includes numerous case studies and a Microsoft Excel based software tool to allow planners to evaluate the business case for implementing various water conservation activities. This book is an essential resource for professionals in water and wastewater resources, particularly for planners and engineers. It is also a useful guide for Post Graduate and Undergraduate students. Author(s): Lisa Maddaus, William Maddaus and Michelle Maddaus, Maddaus Water Management Inc.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For broadband communications, it was frequency division multiplexing. For optical communications, it was wavelength division multiplexing. Then, for all types of networks it was code division. Breakthroughs in transmission speed were made possible by these developments, heralding next-generation networks of increasing capability in each case. The basic idea is the same: more channels equals higher throughput. For wireless communications, it is space-time coding using multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) technology. Providing a complete treatment of MIMO under a single cover, MIMO System Technology for Wireless Communications assembles coverage on all aspects of MIMO technology along with up-to-date information on key related issues. Contributors from leading academic and industrial institutions around the world share their expertise and lend the book a global perspective. They lead you gradually from basic to more advanced concepts, from propagation modeling and performance analysis to space-time codes, various systems, implementation options and limitations, practical system development considerations, field trials, and network planning issues. Linking theoretical analysis to practical issues, the book does not limit itself to any specific standardization or research/industrial initiatives. MIMO is the catalyst for the next revolution in wireless systems, and MIMO System Technology for Wireless Communications lays a thorough and complete foundation on which to build the next and future generations of wireless networks.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: COLLABORATIVE NETWORKS Becoming a pervasive paradigm In recent years the area of collaborative networks is being consolidated as a new discipline (Camarinha-Matos, Afsarmanesh, 2005) that encompasses and gives more structured support to a large diversity of collaboration forms. In terms of applications, besides the “traditional” sectors represented by the advanced supply chains, virtual enterprises, virtual organizations, virtual teams, and their breading environments, new forms of collaborative structures are emerging in all sectors of the society. Examples can be found in e-government, intelligent transportation systems, collaborative virtual laboratories, agribusiness, elderly care, silver economy, etc. In some cases those developments tend to adopt a terminology that is specific of that domain; often the involved actors in a given domain are not fully aware of the developments in the mainstream research on collaborative networks. For instance, the grid community adopted the term “virtual organization” but focused mainly on the resource sharing perspective, ignoring most of the other aspects involved in collaboration. The European enterprise interoperability community, which was initially focused on the intra-enterprise aspects, is moving towards inter-enterprise collaboration. Collaborative networks are thus becoming a pervasive paradigm giving basis to new socio-organizational structures.

Book excerpt: Infectious diseases are the leading cause of death globally, particularly among children and young adults. The spread of new pathogens and the threat of antimicrobial resistance pose particular challenges in combating these diseases. Major Infectious Diseases identifies feasible, cost-effective packages of interventions and strategies across delivery platforms to prevent and treat HIV/AIDS, other sexually transmitted infections, tuberculosis, malaria, adult febrile illness, viral hepatitis, and neglected tropical diseases. The volume emphasizes the need to effectively address emerging antimicrobial resistance, strengthen health systems, and increase access to care. The attainable goals are to reduce incidence, develop innovative approaches, and optimize existing tools in resource-constrained settings.
