Book excerpt: The question I grappled with was how to move students from "couch-potato" readers who can answer basic questions with one word-to readers who think while reading-to readers who think beyond their reading. -Aimee Buckner In Notebook Know-How, Aimee Buckner demonstrated the power of notebooks to spark and capture students' ideas in the writing workshop. In Notebook Connections, she turns her focus to the reading workshop, showing how to transform those "couch-potato" readers into deep thinkers. Buckner's fourth-grade students use reader's notebooks as a place to document their thinking and growth, to support their thinking for group discussions, and to explore their own ideas about a text without every entry being judged as evidence of their reading progress. Buckner describes her model as flexible enough for students to respond in a variety of ways yet structured enough to provide explicit instruction. Notebook Connections leads teachers through the process of launching, developing, and fine-tuning a reader's notebook program. Teacher-guided lessons in every chapter help students create anchor texts for their notebooks using various comprehension and writing strategies. As students become more proficient, they grow more independent in their thinking and responses and will begin to select the strategies that work best for them. In the process, the notebook becomes a bridge that helps students make connections between ideas, texts, strategies, and their work as readers and writers. Notebook Connections, filled with lesson ideas and assessment tips, provides a comprehensive model for making reader's notebooks the centerpiece of your reading workshop.

Book excerpt: "Schapiro's letters to his future wife, Lillian Milgram, were written in 1926 and 1927, while he was a graduate student touring the artistic monuments of Europe and the Near East. Bearing intimate witness to this formative journey, they augment the visual and factual details he so painstakingly recorded in his notebooks with impassioned reflections on art and lively accounts of his encounters with an older generation of art historians."--Back cover.

Book excerpt: Sketchbooks are an outstanding feature in more than a few exhibitions: they have a downright prominent place in showcases, above them monitors where all sheets can be seen on touch screens – a visual pleasure and an exciting event. Unfortunately, however, many people continue to be rather baffled by sketchbooks. What goes on there? Most are convinced that the purpose of a sketchbook is to prepare for a work – typically a painting. Its pages contain impressions of a preliminary nature, sketched in a few strokes, which are completed at another time and another place. But things have changed, and this is a development we have to examine at long last in greater depth: sketchbooks can accomplish more; they plough a field other than that of “pre-liminarity”! To date there is no publication that explores their true significance within the creative process. Is it not called for to take a close look at the weight artists attach to the “silent companion in their jacket pocket”? This is the purpose of this book.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Remade in France: Anglicisms in the Lexicon and Morphology of French chronicles the current status of French Anglicisms, a popular topic in the history of the French language and a compelling example of the influence of global English. The abundant data come from primary sources-a large online newspaper corpus (for unofficial Anglicisms) and the dictionary (for official Anglicisms)-and secondary sources. This book examines the appearance and behavior of English items in the lexicon and morphology of French, and explains them in the context of French neology and lexical activity. The first phase of the latest contact period (1990-2015) has its own complex linguistic characterization, including a significant influx of nonce borrowings and very low frequency Anglicisms, heterogeneous and creative borrowing outcomes, and direct phraseological borrowing. This book is a counterargument to the well-known criticism that Anglicisms are lexical polluters. On the contrary, the use of Anglicisms requires the inventive application of complex linguistic rules, and the borrowing of Anglicisms into the French lexicon is convincing proof that language change is systematic. The findings bring novel interdisciplinary insights to the domains of borrowing in a non-bilingual contact setting; global English as a source of lexical creativity in the French lexicon; the phases, patterns and processes of integration of English loanwords; the morphology of borrowing; and computational corpus linguistics. The appended database is a snapshot of a synchronic period of linguistic contact and a useful lexicographic resource.

Book excerpt: A writer discovers a set of notes in his notebook and sets off on a journey through the Paris of his past, in search of the woman he loved forty years previously. Set in the Montparnasse district of Paris, the author, Jean, retraces his nocturnal footsteps around the left bank during France's period of decolonisation during the 1960's. He tries to remember what brought him into contact with a gang that frequented the hotel Unic in the area. His quest through seedy cafés and cheap hotels becomes an enquiry into a woman, Dannie, whom Jean loved and who once tried to admit to a terrible crime. Over the course of several voyages between past and present, we meet various shady characters, and discover that Dannie may have killed "someone". As his memories overlap with the discovery of an old vice squad dossier, Jean reinvestigates the closed case of a crime where he could well be the last remaining witness. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the Academy Award-winning cowriter of Birdman, a wonderfully eccentric, suspenseful debut in the tradition of Misery and Kiss of the Spiderwoman about a screenwriter kidnapped by a world-famous director who orders him to compose a masterpiece. Pablo, a failed Argentine novelist-turned-screenwriter, has been kidnapped by the greatest Latin American film director of all time and is kept in a basement where he works, day after day, on what he is told must at all costs be a great, world-changing screenplay. Every night, after finishing work on the script, Pablo writes in his notebook and every morning he crosses out what he wrote the night before. The Crossed-Out Notebook is Pablo’s diary of this time: being brought food by a maid; being threatened with a gun; vociferously arguing with the director about what he’s written the previous day. The clash between the two men and their different approaches leads to a movie being made, a gun going off, an unlikely escape, and a final confrontation. In the end, The Crossed-Out Notebook is a darkly funny novel full of intrigue and surprise about the essence of the creative process; a short, crazy ode to any artist whose brilliance shines through strangeness and adversity.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a time marked by prominent public clashes between theists and atheists, much less attention has been given to the question of agnosticism, whether in public debate or in academic literature. This is all the more surprising given that so many in Western society feel unable to identify unequivocally with either theism or atheism. This book brings together some leading contemporary philosophers, from both the analytic and continental traditions, to give a sustained and in-depth treatment of the question of agnosticism. Approaching the question from a variety of stances and employing different methodologies, the contributors explore the various possible meanings of agnosticism today. Several of them develop what they describe as a 'New Agnosticism,' where the relationship with theism or forms of religious belief is not as mutually exclusive as has often been assumed. Others look for signs of agnosticism in places where it is not usually thought to be found, such as in forms of continental philosophy, and even in theology itself. They also raise interesting methodological questions at the intersection of analytic and continental philosophy. These are stimulating and innovative essays working with the most recent developments in philosophy and religious thought. They open up new avenues of thought that will be of interest to philosophers, theologians, and other thoughtful readers, whether theist, atheist, or agnostic.

Book excerpt: Harness the power of Apple iOS machine learning (ML) capabilities and learn the concepts and techniques necessary to be a successful Apple iOS machine learning practitioner! Machine earning (ML) is the science of getting computers to act without being explicitly programmed. A branch of Artificial Intelligence (AI), machine learning techniques offer ways to identify trends, forecast behavior, and make recommendations. The Apple iOS Software Development Kit (SDK) allows developers to integrate ML services, such as speech recognition and language translation, into mobile devices, most of which can be used in multi-cloud settings. Focusing on Apple’s ML services, Machine Learning for iOS Developers is an up-to-date introduction to the field, instructing readers to implement machine learning in iOS applications. Assuming no prior experience with machine learning, this reader-friendly guide offers expert instruction and practical examples of ML integration in iOS. Organized into two sections, the book’s clearly-written chapters first cover fundamental ML concepts, the different types of ML systems, their practical uses, and the potential challenges of ML solutions. The second section teaches readers to use models—both pre-trained and user-built—with Apple’s CoreML framework. Source code examples are provided for readers to download and use in their own projects. This book helps readers: Understand the theoretical concepts and practical applications of machine learning used in predictive data analytics Build, deploy, and maintain ML systems for tasks such as model validation, optimization, scalability, and real-time streaming Develop skills in data acquisition and modeling, classification, and regression. Compare traditional vs. ML approaches, and machine learning on handsets vs. machine learning as a service (MLaaS) Implement decision tree based models, an instance-based machine learning system, and integrate Scikit-learn & Keras models with CoreML Machine Learning for iOS Developers is a must-have resource software engineers and mobile solutions architects wishing to learn ML concepts and implement machine learning on iOS Apps.
