Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Perennial favorites on red carpets around the world, Herrera's gowns are favored by First Ladies (from Jackie Kennedy to Michelle Obama), celebrities (Renee Zellweger, Tina Fey, Penelope Cruz), international royalty, and her own faithful clientele for their refinement, timelessness, glamour, and romance. This first book on her design career is to be released on the occasion of the house’s thirty-fifth anniversary. The first name in American elegance, Carolina Herrera has distinguished herself in the global fashion world with a style that exudes luxury, femininity, and impeccable taste. A true empress of style, she has inspired the likes of pop-art icon Andy Warhol and legendary Vogue editor-in-chief Diana Vreeland (who encouraged Herrera to open her fashion house in 1981) with a style that exudes luxury, femininity, and impeccable taste. The first complete portrait of this influential designer’s career, this monograph is both a celebration of three-and-a-half decades of the house’s work and a look forward. Organized into chapters that highlight signatures of Herrera’s work, the book illustrates the distinctive innovation and caliber of her designs (she is one of the few American designers who still employ couture-trained ateliers team). The text, by veteran fashion writer J.J. Martin, includes quotes by colleagues and friends, interviews, and behind-the-scenes reporting. In addition to archival images, the lavish visual materials include new photography of Herrera’s work from her 1981 debut to the present. Art directed by Fabien Baron, this book is an exciting look at one of the leading figures in American fashion.

Book excerpt: Chronicling the story of the gallery from its founding in 1984 through its history creating and mirroring developments in the New York and international art worlds, forming a portrait of the gallery as it stands in the present day. Edited by Kurt Brondo, designed by Common Name, and published by 303inPrint under the direction of Fabiola Alondra, the limited edition 448-page book is a culmination of years of research, collation, and unearthing of the gallery's archives in an attempt to construct a complete history. Documentation of early group shows, guest curatorial projects and provocations illustrate the collaborative nature of the program, where now-seminal artists, curators, gallerists, and writers exchanged ideas and roles in New York's fertile '80s heyday. It was a time where it would not be unusual for 303 Gallery's neighbor (American Fine Arts) to share a solo exhibition by an artist under a pseudonym (Richard Prince / John Dogg), or where 303 Gallery would host a group show for a like-minded but entirely separate gallery under both of their names (AC Project Room at 303 Gallery). Texts from artists including Richard Prince, Collier Schorr, Karen Kilimnik, Kim Gordon, Mary Heilmann, Sue Williams, Rodney Graham, Doug Aitken, Nick Mauss and Alicja Kwade, among other important contributions, offer intimate and historically significant accounts of how 303 Gallery began, how it has progressed, and what it has meant to them.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a tribute to Etienne E. Kerre on the occasion of his retirement on October 1st, 2010, after being active for 35 years in the field of fuzzy set theory. It gathers contributions from researchers that have been close to him in one way or another during his long and fruitful career. Besides a foreword by Lotfi A. Zadeh, it contains 13 chapters on both theoretical and applied topics in fuzzy set theory, divided in three parts: 1) logics and connectives, 2) data analysis, and 3) media applications. The first part deals with fuzzy logics and with operators on (extensions of) fuzzy sets. Part 2 deals with fuzzy methods in rough set theory, formal concept analysis, decision making and classification. The last part discusses the use of fuzzy methods for representing and manipulating media objects, such as images and text documents. The diversity of the topics that are covered reflect the diversity of Etienne's research interests, and indeed, the diversity of current research in the area of fuzzy set theory.

This book was released on 2018-01-30 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book builds on existing work exploring succession, disturbance ecology, and the interface between geophysical and biological systems in the aftermath of the 1980 eruptions of Mount St. Helens. The eruption was dramatic both in the spatial extent of impacts and the range of volcanic disturbance types and intensities. Complex geophysical forces created unparalleled opportunities to study initial ecological responses and long-term succession processes that occur in response to a major contemporary eruption across a great diversity of ecosystems—lowland to alpine forests, meadows, lakes, streams, and rivers. These factors make Mount St. Helens an extremely rich environment for learning about the ecology of volcanic areas and, more generally, about ecosystem response to major disturbance of many types, including land management. Lessons about ecological recovery at Mount St. Helens are shaping thought about succession, disturbance ecology, ecosystem management, and landscape ecology. In the first five years after the eruption several syntheses documented the numerous, intensive studies of ecological recovery. The 2005 volume “Ecological Responses to the 1980 Eruption of Mount St. Helens” (Springer Publishing) was the first ecological synthesis since 1987 of the scores of ecological studies underway in the area. More than half of the world’s published studies on plant and animal responses to volcanic eruptions have taken place at Mount St. Helens. The 25-year synthesis, which generally included investigations (i.e., data) from 1980-2000, made it possible to more thoroughly analyze initial stages of ecological responses and to test the validity of early interpretations and the duration of early phenomena. And 35 years after the eruption, it is time for many of the scientists working in the first three-decade, post-eruption period to pass the science baton to the next generation of scientists to work at Mount St. Helens, and a synt hesis a t this time of transfer of responsibility to a younger cohort of scientists will be an enormous asset to the continuation of work at the volcano.
