Download or read book The Art of Dreams written by Barbara Hahn and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2016-08-22 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We all dream; we all share these strange experiences that infuse our nights. But we only know of those nightly adventures when we decide to represent them. In the long history of coming to terms with dreams there seem to be two different ways of delineating our forays into the world of the unconscious: One is the attempt of interpreting, of unveiling the hidden meaning of dreams. The other one is not so much concerned with the relation of dream and meaning, of dream and reality, it rather concentrates on trying to find means of representation for this extremely productive force that determines our sleep. The essays collected in this book explore both attempts. They follow debates in philosophy and psychoanalysis and they study literature, theatre, dance, film, and photography.

Book excerpt: Collecting important works from one of Australia's leading scholars of media, culture, and policy, this study brings sharper focus upon both historical and industrial contexts. Engaging with the global debate on multiethnic societies by focusing on creativity at the margins, this survey argues that industrial and social trends in media, communications, and culture are outstripping the academic frameworks that were erected to deal with them.
Download or read book Dream Reader written by Anthony Shafton and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 1995-07-01 with total page 704 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dream Reader is a uniquely comprehensive survey of contemporary approaches to understanding and working with dreams. The general reader interested in exploring the world of dreams could not obtain a better introduction and grounding than from this book. Academic psychologists, therapists, and professional dreamworkers alike will find it to be an incomparable survey and sampling of the growing literature on dreaming. In Part I, Shafton summarizes sleep laboratory discoveries, then considers theories about dream generation and meaning that have arisen from these discoveries. Part II discusses major Euro-American schools of dream interpretation in the twentieth century: Freud, Jung, Existential, Cultural, and Gestalt. Also included are chapters dealing with various topics of interest: the dream styles of people of both genders, and of people with certain psychiatric diagnoses; non-interpretive approaches to dreamwork; dream incubation; lucid dreaming; dream re-entry; dreams of the blind; post-traumatic nightmares; and many more. Dream Reader provides an integrated review of the whole literature of dream psychology—the clinical, academic, and also the serious popular literature. It also presents sizeable extracts from the original sources for the reader's own critical evaluation.
Book Synopsis National Fictions by : Graeme Turner
Download or read book National Fictions written by Graeme Turner and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-07-28 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: National Fictions is a study of Australian literature and film. It is also a study of Australian culture, viewing the novels and films as products of a specific culture - as narratives with similar structures, functions, forms and meanings. It covers a wide range of texts, offering both close analysis and an account of their place within the system of meanings the book proposes as dominant in Australian culture. The second edition of this influential work includes a new Afterword which traces recent changes in Australian literature and film, examining the growth of women's writing and popular fiction, as well as current trends in Australian cinema. Turner asks whether these developments really mark a shift in the Australian narrative, and whether it is still possible to speak in terms of a national culture. '.a ground-clearing book. a seminal work, setting an agenda for cultural studies beyond the stockyards and croquet lawns of literary criticism.' - David Carter, Australian Literary Studies 'As a global syncretist, Turner is without peer.' - Stuart Cunningham, Media Information Australia

Book Synopsis Ceilings and Dreams by : Paul Emmons
Download or read book Ceilings and Dreams written by Paul Emmons and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-07-08 with total page 393 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Where is the space for dreaming in the twenty-first century? Lofty thoughts, like dreams, are born and live overhead, just as they have been represented in Renaissance paintings and modern cartoons. Ceilings are often repositories of stories, events and otherwise invisible oneiric narratives. Yet environments that inspire innovative thinking are dwindling as our world confronts enormous challenges, and almost all of our thinking, debating and decision-making takes place under endless ceiling grids. Quantitative research establishes that spaces with taller ceilings elicit broader, more creative thoughts. Today, ceilings are usually squat conduits of technology: they have become the blind spot of modern architecture. The twenty essays in this book look across cultures, places and ceilings over time to discover their potential to uplift the human spirit. Not just one building element among many, the ceiling is a key to unlock the architectural imagination. Ceilings and Dreams aims to correct this blind spot and encourages architects and designers, researchers and students, to look up through writings organized into three expansive categories: reveries, suspensions and inversions. The contributors contemplate the architecture of levity and the potential of the ceiling, once again, as a place for dreaming.

Download or read book William James written by Bruce Wilshire and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 1984-06-30 with total page 704 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The importance of this collection of writings of William James lies in the fact that it has been arranged to provide a systematic introduction to his major philosophical discoveries, and precisely to those doctrines and theories that are of most burning current interest. William James: The Essential Writings is a series of philosophical arguments on some of the most "obscure and head-cracking problems" in contemporary philosophy; the relation of thought to its object; the interrelationships between meaning and truth; the levels and structures of experience; the degrees of reality; the nature of the embodied self; the relation of ethics, aesthetics, and religious experience to man's strenuously and "heroically" active nature; and, above all, the structurization of the experienced life-world as the validating ground and origin of all theory; Bruce Wilshire has provided an introduction to William James's thought on these and other related points which is at once both substantial and subtle.

Book Synopsis The Australian Film Revival by : Susan Barber
Download or read book The Australian Film Revival written by Susan Barber and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2023-01-26 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Australian Film Revival: 70s, 80s, and Beyond explores the matrix of forces – artistic, cultural, economic, political, governmental, and ideological – that gave rise to, shaped, and sustained this remarkable film movement. This engaging new study brings fresh perspectives, insights, and innovative approaches to a variety of films from a diversity of filmmakers. Areas of focus include the complex and contentious subjects of masculinity, femininity and feminism, the maternal, as well as the Indigenous road film and the protean Australian gothic. During the formative years of the revival, Australian films seemed to emerge from out of the blue in terms of global film history, with many features including Picnic at Hanging Rock (l975), Caddie (l976), The Last Wave (l977), The Chant of Jimmie Blacksmith (l978), and My Brilliant Career (l979) receiving international distribution and enthusiastic critical acclaim with strong box office results. By the time the film revival was in full swing, not only did Australian audiences flock to theaters to see “homegrown” films, but the quantity of Australian films on overseas screens was so high that ardent critics declared this outpouring an Australian “New Wave.” The eyes of the world had turned to a compelling and largely unknown culture.
Download or read book On Slowness written by Lutz Koepnick and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2014-10-07 with total page 333 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Speed is an obvious facet of contemporary society, whereas slowness has often been dismissed as conservative and antimodern. Challenging a long tradition of thought, Lutz Koepnick instead proposes to understand slowness as a strategy of the contemporaryÑa decidedly modern practice that gazes firmly at and into the presentÕs velocity. As he engages with late-twentieth- and early-twenty-first-century art, photography, video, film, and literature, Koepnick explores slowness as a critical medium to intensify our temporal and spatial experiences. Slowness helps us register the multiple layers of time, history, and motion that constitute our present. It offers a timely (and untimely) mode of aesthetic perception and representation that emphasizes the openness of the future and undermines any conception of the present as a mere replay of the past. Discussing the photography and art of Janet Cardiff, Olafur Eliasson, Hiroshi Sugimoto, and Michael Wesely; the films of Peter Weir and Tom Tykwer; the video installations of Douglas Gordon, Willie Doherty, and Bill Viola; and the fiction of Don DeLillo, Koepnick shows how slowness can carve out spaces within processes of acceleration that allow us to reflect on alternate temporalities and durations.

This publication responds to the current trends in international media studies by presenting ANT as the new theoretical paradigm through which meaningful discussion and analysis of the media, its production, and its social and cultural effects. Book excerpt: I can't really complain about my life; I have a job I love and a best friend that fills the void of my nonexistent family, but sometimes I'm lonelier than I like to admit. Especially with the holiday season approaching, I can't help but wish I had someone special to share it with. My friend gives me a snow globe with a man and a snowy owl inside, and for some bizarre reason, this man starts showing up every night when I close my eyes. It's... not real, but I can't seem to get the guy out of my head. It probably shouldn't surprise me that my brain conjures up the perfect man in my dreams... well, almost perfect if he'd stop claiming to be a warlock. But the crazy thing is that all of it-that he-feels so real. When I start falling for the man, the warlock, I can't help but wish that what we have in my dreams could be a reality. I know it can't, but at least when I'm asleep, I can be with him-with Alaric. Although this book is part of A Snow Globe Christmas series, it is a complete stand alone and it isn't a requirement that you read the previous books to follow along. We wish everyone a happy holiday season.
