Book Synopsis The Syntax of Words by : Elisabeth O. Selkirk
Download or read book The Syntax of Words written by Elisabeth O. Selkirk and published by Mit Press. This book was released on 1982 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph examines complex words -- compounds and those involving derivational and inflectional affixation -- from a syntactic standpoint that encompasses both the structure of words and the system of rules for generating that structure. The author contends that the syntax of words and the more familiar syntax involving relations among words must be defined by two discrete sets of principles in the grammar, but nevertheless that word structure has the same general formal properties as the larger syntactic structure and is generated by the same sort of rule system. This investigation of word structure and rule systems is based for the most part on the word syntax of English and related languages. One of its major conclusions is that English word structure can be "properly characterized solely in terms of a context-free grammar." Selkirk points out that the Semitic languages, for example, must be characterized in terms of a more elaborate schema. The first chapter presents a general theory of word structure, and discusses a context-free grammar for words, X theory in word structure, and word structure rules. The second chapter is concerned with compounding, and probes the structure and "headedness" of compounds, verbal compounds, and the category type of English compounds. The third and final chapter, on affixation, investigates the nature of affixes, inflectional affixation, and English derivational morphology. This book is the seventh in the Linguistic Inquiry Monograph series.
Book Synopsis The Morphology of Chinese by : Jerome L. Packard
Download or read book The Morphology of Chinese written by Jerome L. Packard and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2000-08-03 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This ground breaking study dispels the common belief that Chinese 'doesn't have words' but instead 'has characters'. Jerome Packard's book provides a comprehensive discussion of the linguistic and cognitive nature of Chinese words. It shows that Chinese, far from being 'morphologically impoverished', has a different morphological system because it selects different 'settings' on parameters shared by all languages. The analysis of Chinese word formation therefore enhances our understanding of word universals. Packard describes the intimate relationship between words and their components, including how the identities of Chinese morphemes are word-driven, and offers new insights into the evolution of morphemes based on Chinese data. Models are offered for how Chinese words are stored in the mental lexicon and processed in natural speech, showing that much of what native speakers know about words occurs innately in the form of a hard-wired, specifically linguistic 'program' in the brain.

Which Coast Guard astronaut said, when asked to describe his scariest moment, "Flying as Malcolm Smith's co-pilot." Which Coast Guard aviator got the blame for putting training wheels and streamers on the commanding officer's and XO's new bicycles. Which Coast Guard aviator threw up in his glove while flying rather than make a mess in the cockpit. This book brings back some of the funniest moments of the Coast Guard during the time period between the "Old Guard" and the new modern Coast Guard. "For more than two decades, Mal has threatened to write a book to chronicle his many colorful experiences during his Coast Guard aviation career. Mal can spin a tale better than any sailor and his exploits in and out of the cockpit are indeed legendary. But the fact is, the closer he gets to the completion of this life-long dream of his, the more nervous I become. I can't wait to read it!" RADM David W. Kunkel, COAST GUARD AVIATOR #1726 "Malcolm Smith is a master storyteller with a flair for finding humor in everyday activities and recounting his observations with entertaining splendor that leaves you thirsting for another. Since meeting him when I was a teenager in Alaska, I have been absorbed by his colorful renditions and have long awaited this composition. I just hope I'm not the subject in one of his stories." CAPT. E. Darrell Nelson, COMMANDING OFFICER, CGAS KODIAK

Download or read book A Better Pencil written by Dennis Baron and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2009-09-24 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Computers, now the writer's tool of choice, are still blamed by skeptics for a variety of ills, from speeding writing up to the point of recklessness, to complicating or trivializing the writing process, to destroying the English language itself. A Better Pencil puts our complex, still-evolving hate-love relationship with computers and the internet into perspective, describing how the digital revolution influences our reading and writing practices, and how the latest technologies differ from what came before. The book explores our use of computers as writing tools in light of the history of communication technology, a history of how we love, fear, and actually use our writing technologies--not just computers, but also typewriters, pencils, and clay tablets. Dennis Baron shows that virtually all writing implements--and even writing itself--were greeted at first with anxiety and outrage: the printing press disrupted the "almost spiritual connection" between the writer and the page; the typewriter was "impersonal and noisy" and would "destroy the art of handwriting." Both pencils and computers were created for tasks that had nothing to do with writing. Pencils, crafted by woodworkers for marking up their boards, were quickly repurposed by writers and artists. The computer crunched numbers, not words, until writers saw it as the next writing machine. Baron also explores the new genres that the computer has launched: email, the instant message, the web page, the blog, social-networking pages like MySpace and Facebook, and communally-generated texts like Wikipedia and the Urban Dictionary, not to mention YouTube. Here then is a fascinating history of our tangled dealings with a wide range of writing instruments, from ancient papyrus to the modern laptop. With dozens of illustrations and many colorful anecdotes, the book will enthrall anyone interested in language, literacy, or writing.

Book Synopsis Implementing a Data Warehouse by : Bruce Russell Ullrey
Download or read book Implementing a Data Warehouse written by Bruce Russell Ullrey and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2007 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this book is to document the methodology and chronology of work activity used by the author to successfully implement a Data Warehouse. Each of the eleven steps of the methodology is reviewed in the book, often using actual working documents as examples. The book contains lessons learned (both good and bad) as well as measures of success for each step. An essential aspect of DW project implementation (and other IT projects as well) is using established business practices to manage development and implementation. Discussion of use of these "due diligence" practices in Step 1 establishes the foundation for starting the DW project with the proper levels of management oversight. Step 2 presents examples of business models necessary for the DW developer to understand the needs of the business that the DW will serve. Other DW books describe the data modeling process but neglect to provide modeling instruction and actual examples to insure that the DW is properly aligned with business needs. An elegant data warehouse that doesn't meet the needs of the business is wasted effort. Step 3 documents and displays the level of detail needed to define CSF's (Critical Success Factors) and KPI's (Key Performance Indicators). If calculations for these important metrics are not defined in detail, and consensus to use them is not reached, then again, the most elegant data warehouse implementation is a wasted effort. In addition, developing and documenting functional requirements is essential in identifying legacy system reporting deficiencies. Step 4 describes how to access and display field level information on the iSeries platform. Actual shots of the resulting screens are shown. Step 5 presents the functional contents of an RFP for a Data Warehousing tool-set. Step 6 presents the progression of work required to build a data warehouse. Step 6 also: · Describes and displays a hybrid dimensional to flat file data model that may be, in reality, the best data organizational model for a typical data warehouse. Also, a table is included showing examples of data file field cryptic names and their corresponding metadata name. · &nb
