Book Synopsis Human Diversity by : Bernard Charles Lamb
Download or read book Human Diversity written by Bernard Charles Lamb and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2015-10-28 with total page 469 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Human diversity, with its myriad of different conditions involving biology, psychology, and social structures, remains one of the biggest challenges — and opportunities — facing the species. With many government and private firms now having diversity or equality officers, programmes or committees, it is clear that human diversity is a cornerstone of policy-making at the very highest echelons. All this points to a need for proper scientific and medical information on this topic — not soft 'politically correct' sociology. This book provides the hard facts on human similarities and differences, their causes and effects on people. It covers the whole range from normal to extreme human types, and presents — for the first time — much of the author's 25 years of original research on the subject. It can also act as a family medical guide to aspects of human function, structure and disease. It covers many human topics in a humane and understandable fashion, providing much material for information and discussion. It can be used as a handbook or textbook on human diversity, but is mainly popular science for the general public. A special feature of this book is the 140 colour photos that illustrate the diversity of human life, nearly all taken by the author himself. Given the vast nature of the subject, the book seamlessly integrates relevant data from multiple disciplines including medicine, biology, anthropology, genetics, psychology, evolution, languages, sociology, history and geography. Even controversial subjects such as race, class and culture are tackled head-on with no-nonsense scientific rigour."--

Book Synopsis Syllable Structure of Bangla by : Somdev Kar
Download or read book Syllable Structure of Bangla written by Somdev Kar and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2010-08-11 with total page 199 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Syllable Structure of Bangla: An Optimality-Theoretic Approach is a three part study designed to provide students/readers with a better understanding about the structure of Bangla syllables in terms of phonology and morphology. The book is divided into twelve chapters with each chapter focusing on one particular area of the study. The first part of this three part study focuses on the frequency of occurrences of different consonant clusters in Bangla. It argues that these clusters are best described with the help of the Bangla lexicon into three strata that include native Bangla words (NB) as well as Sanskrit borrowings (SB) and other borrowings (OB). This part of the study focuses on the analysis of these syllabic structures in Bangla with the help of the Optimality Theory (OT). The second part of the study focuses on a morphological analysis of the standard verbal inflectional paradigms of Bangla in the framework of Distributed Morphology (DM). This includes categories of tense/mood, levels of politeness and persons. This analysis is then compared with the English verbal inflectional morphology. In a later stage, Kar picks up the Optimality Theory from where he left it at the first part and applies it to analyze the outcomes of the morphological analysis in DM and following phonological changes on them.

Book Synopsis India After Gandhi by : Ramachandra Guha
Download or read book India After Gandhi written by Ramachandra Guha and published by HarperCollins. This book was released on 2019-06-11 with total page 857 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From one of the subcontinent’s most important and controversial writers comes this definitive history of post-Partition India, now revised and updated with extensive new material Told in lucid and beautiful prose, the story of India’s wild ride toward and since Independence is a riveting one. Taking full advantage of the dramatic details of the protests and conflicts that helped shape the nation, politically, socially, and economically, Ramachandra Guha writes of the factors and processes that have kept the country together, and kept it democratic, defying the numerous prophets of doom. Moving between history and biography, this story provides fresh insights into the lives and public careers of those legendary and long-serving Prime Ministers, Jawaharlal Nehru and his daughter, Indira Gandhi. Guha includes vivid sketches of the major “provincial” leaders, but also writes with feeling and sensitivity about lesser-known Indians—peasants, tribals, women, workers, and Untouchables. Massively researched and elegantly written, this is the work of a major scholar at the height of his powers, a brilliant and definitive history of what is possibly the most important, occasionally the most exasperating, and certainly the most interesting country in the world. This tenth anniversary edition, published to coincide with seventy years of India’s independence, is revised and expanded to bring the narrative up to the present.
