Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Elements of Classical Physics tackles the different areas of general physics in a way that the authors believe to be more effective. The book contains material easily understood with a minimal mathematical framework and introduces the necessary mathematical concepts when they have been presented in a typical concurrent mathematical course. The book also provides a quantitative understanding of the different concepts in a wide variety of specific situations. The topics covered, which are arranged according to increasing difficulty in a uniformly progressive pace, are temperature and heat; light and wavelength; particle motion on and special relativity; dynamics, laws of motion, momentum, work, and mechanical energy; electromagnetism; and thermodynamics. The material is recommended as a textbook for beginning physics students, as it aims to give its readers a smooth transition from high school to a college level of understanding on the subject.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This book is a must-have for anyone working to remediate students struggling with math. It gets into the types of misconceptions students have and gives multiple ways to correct them." —Donna Adkins, First-Grade Teacher Perritt Primary School, Arkadelphia, AR "The nuts-and-bolts approach to assessment and error analysis make this book a real tool for everyday use." —Judith A. Filkins, K–8 Math Curriculum Coordinator Lebanon School District, NH A proven approach to mathematics teaching that adds up to student success! When students make computational errors in mathematics, often the prescribed solution is more drilling. However, by combining error analysis with timely and specific intervention based on conceptual understanding, teachers can get to the cause of students′ errors, uncover underlying misconceptions, and help students understand and correct their mistakes. The targeted interventions for each error pattern promote teaching for conceptual understanding and are supported by documented academic research. David B. Spangler, a school math consultant with more than 35 years of experience, provides a model that focuses on student error patterns in addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. This book offers targeted instructional strategies based on the five NCTM process standards and includes four units, each containing: A diagnostic test in a multiple-choice format An item analysis table that correlates incorrect test responses with student error patterns A detailed section of supporting intervention activities to address specific types of errors Practice exercises for students, with answer keys Reflection questions for teachers to use in a professional development setting, workshop, or methods course With supporting research, a section on "big ideas" in computation and problem solving, and student reproducibles for games and activities, Strategies for Teaching Whole Number Computation promotes a proactive and scaffolded approach to teaching mathematics in a meaningful way.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seventeen years after the 2nd International Symposium on Oxygen Transport to Tissue, which was held in Mainz in March 1975, the local Organizing Committee and the Board of ISOTT were pleased to host the ISOTT Conference in Mainz on the Rhine again. The venue of the 20th meeting was the prestigious, fully restored Schloss Waldthausen (Waldthausen Castle) which provided a special setting for ISOTT 1992. The beautiful front view of the castle became part of the ISOTT 1992 logo. The 20th ISOTT Meeting was held in Mainz from August 26th through August 30th, 1992. The Conference attracted 200 active participants from 16 countries. The theme of this meeting emphasized oxygen transport to tumors but as in earlier meetings, essentially all aspects of oxygen transport within the body were covered as demonstrated by the manuscripts comprising this volume of the series "Oxygen Transport to Tissue". All manuscripts were reviewed. Extensive revisions were made in about 25% and modest revision in about another 30%. Because we had to compromise between the aim of rapid publication on the one hand and the need for thorough review on the other, minor errors in format and some typographical errors were not corrected. Except for some revisions, all of the original camera-ready manuscripts in this volume were prepared by the authors themselves and we greatly appreciate their cooperation.

Book excerpt: The term "small object" refers to the plethora of manufactured goods which we encounter every day in our domestic environments and in our work activities. More precisely, the adjective "small" can refer to the value of simplicity and essentiality that permeates a form and, as a consequence, its dimensions. The form of the small object is the result of a slow process involving production technologies and the use of materials. It is worth noting that one of the most common of these objects, the thumbtack, was manufactured in Switzerland by a company that transferred the experience acquired in the production of clock components into this new product. The influence of small objects in everyday life can be further confirmed if we look at packaging -- specifically, the containers we use on a regular basis to handle many different kinds of products: the jar, the flexible tube, the paper bag, the tetrapak. A powerful communication value is directly linked to function and, as such, influences our consumption and habits.
