Book excerpt: Because of the 'applied' nature of ergonomics there are many outstanding pieces of work that have never been published in the archival literature. These volumes collect some of those papers that have attained classical status.

Book Synopsis Control Theory for Humans by : Richard J. Jagacinski
Download or read book Control Theory for Humans written by Richard J. Jagacinski and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2018-10-08 with total page 357 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This textbook provides a tutorial introduction to behavioral applications of control theory. Control theory describes the information one should be sensitive to and the pattern of influence that one should exert on a dynamic system in order to achieve a goal. As such, it is applicable to various forms of dynamic behavior. The book primarily deals with manual control (e.g., moving the cursor on a computer screen, lifting an object, hitting a ball, driving a car), both as a substantive area of study and as a useful perspective for approaching control theory. It is the experience of the authors that by imagining themselves as part of a manual control system, students are better able to learn numerous concepts in this field. Topics include varieties of control theory, such as classical, optimal, fuzzy, adaptive, and learning control, as well as perception and decision making in dynamic contexts. The authors also discuss implications of control theory for how experiments can be conducted in the behavioral sciences. In each of these areas they have provided brief essays intended to convey key concepts that enable the reader to more easily pursue additional readings. Behavioral scientists teaching control courses will be very interested in this book.

Book Synopsis Human Performance, Workload, and Situational Awareness Measures Handbook, Third Edition - 2-Volume Set by : Valerie Jane Gawron
Download or read book Human Performance, Workload, and Situational Awareness Measures Handbook, Third Edition - 2-Volume Set written by Valerie Jane Gawron and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2019-12-17 with total page 431 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This two-volume set was developed to help researchers and practitioners select measures to be used in the evaluation of human/machine systems. It can also be used to supplement classes at both the undergraduate and graduate courses in ergonomics, experimental psychology, human factors, human performance, measurement, and system test and evaluation. Volume 1 of the handbook begins with an overview of the steps involved in developing a test to measure human performance, workload, and/or situational awareness. This is followed by a definition of human performance and a review of human performance measures. Situational Awareness is similarly treated in a subsequent chapter. Volume 2 presents a definition of workload and a review of workload measures. Provides a short engineering tutorial on experimental design Offers readily accessible information on human performance, workload, and situational awareness (SA) measures Presents general description of the measure Covers data collection, reduction, and analysis requirement Details out the strengths and limitations or restrictions of each measure, including any known proprietary rights or restrictions, as well as validity and reliability data
Book Synopsis HCI International 2013 - Posters' Extended Abstracts by : Constantine Stephanidis
Download or read book HCI International 2013 - Posters' Extended Abstracts written by Constantine Stephanidis and published by Springer. This book was released on 2013-06-13 with total page 794 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the second of a two-volume set (CCIS 373 and CCIS 374) that constitutes the extended abstracts of the posters presented during the 15th International Conference on Human-Computer Interaction, HCII 2013, held in Las Vegas, USA, in July 2013, jointly with 12 other thematically similar conferences. The total of 1666 papers and 303 posters presented at the HCII 2013 conferences was carefully reviewed and selected from 5210 submissions. These papers address the latest research and development efforts and highlight the human aspects of design and use of computing systems. The papers accepted for presentation thoroughly cover the entire field of human-computer interaction, addressing major advances in knowledge and effective use of computers in a variety of application areas. The extended abstracts were carefully reviewed and selected for inclusion in this two-volume set. The papers included in this volume are organized in the following topical sections: learning and education; health and medicine; media, art and culture; transport; Web and social media; information search and retrieval; work, collaboration and creativity; text and storytelling; agents, avatars and robots; smart environments; virtual and mixed environments; security and privacy.
Book Synopsis A Synthesis of Human Response in Closed-loop Tracking Tasks by : James J. Adams
Download or read book A Synthesis of Human Response in Closed-loop Tracking Tasks written by James J. Adams and published by . This book was released on 1968 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Experiments have been conducted to determine the variability in a human subject's control stick response to the stimulus of displayed displacement and of rate of change of displacement to aid in the implementation of the time variations to be included in a linear model of the human subject. Additional tracking tests were made to obtain a definition of the characteristics of the random signal to be added to the model. These two factors, the time variations and the random signal, were then added to the linear model, and the resulting composite model was placed in analog representations of single-loop and multiloop systems. The results demonstrate that this composite model reproduces the dynamic characteristics of the time histories and mean-square system error which more closely match the response obtained with the human subject than does the linear model."--Summary
