Book excerpt: “America is a land of wonders, in which everything is in constant motion and every change seems an improvement.... No natural boundary seems to be set to the efforts of man; and in his eyes what is not yet done is only what he has not yet attempted to do”—Alexis de Tocqueville, Democracy in America (1835). “Americans will pay a big price for an invention that will help them save time they don’t know what to do with”—Anonymous. This collection of quotations—both serious and humorous—about America is divided into 19 main topics: The Nation, The American People, Places, Nature, Mind, The Individual, Human Relations, Social Life, Culture and Media, Literature and Language, Religion and Belief, Past and Future, History, War and the Military, International Relations, Politics and Government, Law and Order, Business and Economy, and Food. Each main topic is divided into subtopics; for example, “Culture and Media” has these: Architecture, Art, Charlie Chaplin, Dance, Fashion, Intellectuals, Marilyn Monroe, Movies, Music, Elvis Presley, and Television. The author attributes each quote to its speaker, author or composer, and wherever possible, provides the date of the quote and the name of the work in which it was published. In the case of uncertainty about the exact date of a quote, the author provides the birth and death dates of the person to whom the quote is attributed. Also included are a keyword and subject index and a speaker index.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For almost two decades, tens of thousands of sales people have learned the lessons presented here by Xerox trainer Robert L. Jolles. The secret, Jolles reveals, is reversing the conventional selling practice. You must focus first on your customer's needs and decision-making process, instead of on the selling practice. Jolles provides a systematic approach that teaches you to anticipate, and influence, customer behaviour as the customer moves through an eight-stage 'decision cycle'. Only after you understand the steps of this decision cycle, Jolles cautions, are you prepared to match it to your 'selling cycle'. At the heart of these lessons is the simple but brilliant role-reversing concept of taking an idea and planting it in the mind of your customer, making the customer believe he or she thought of it first. Jolles teaches a repeatable, predictable selling process that can be adapted or modified to fit any experience that requires the skills of persuasion. The book includes a series of case studies, activities, and exercises that enable you to better understand the principles being taught, so you can immediately apply them to your own unique scenarios.

Book excerpt: Special educators are facing new challenges at the beginning of the 21st century as public education is being reformed by a vision focusing on measurable student outcomes. The future course of the field will be shaped by the policy and programmatic responses to several issues, including demographic changes in student populations, a lack of certified special education teachers, criticism in the public media for the rising costs of services, and debates about the preferred philosophy of service delivery for students with disabilities. Additional chapters discuss university-school collaboration, charter schools, disability studies, school violence, disproportionality in placement, male African-American teachers, and ethics. This book has been written out of a context of research and program development activities with public schools over the past decade in one of the largest Colleges of Education in a diverse metropolitan area in the country. The issues selected for analysis and the perspective guiding those analyses grew out of this work and out of a national Delphi study of the views of parents and constituent organizations and leading researchers, teacher educators, and policy makers in Special Education.

Book excerpt: Divine Father was an opportunity for me to explore masculinity, the male spirit, and the relationship between feminine and masculine energy. It was an opportunity for me to reflect, to examine what I think and believe about what it means to be a man in todays world, how and when I stifle that spirit, and what I can do to touch and release the Divine Father that exists within me. It was an opportunity for me to reflect on the important concepts of balance, my changing role of son, spouse, father, grandfather and all the masculine possibilities that still exist for each of us. Chick Moorman, Author of Parent Talk, Talk Sense to yourself and many more The Divine Father will inspire both men and women to let go of fear and embrace the reality that we are one. The daily sutras, prayers, contemplations and invocations are wonderful tools to sustain the true masculine energy in all of us. Cloe Madanes, author of Relationship Breakthrough Divine Father is filled with wisdom, heart, and a world of uplifting ideas. Men will surely benefit from these noble ideas and exercises, and women will gain much too. Thank you, Ivonne, for offering vision, inspiration, practical tools, and hope. Surely the world will be better for readers absorbing and living these noble truths. Alan Cohen, author of A Deep Breath of Life. I trust that this wonderful book by Ivonne Delaflor will inspire many to create balance as the basis of true holistic experience and its resultant fulfillment. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Even before its dissolution in 1991, the Soviet Union was engaged in an ambivalent struggle to come to terms with its violent and repressive history. Following the death of Stalin in 1953, entrenched officials attempted to distance themselves from the late dictator without questioning the underlying legitimacy of the Soviet system. At the same time, the return of Gulag victims to society opened questions about the nature, reality, and mentality of the system that remain contentious to this day. This book is the first to examine at length and in-depth the post-camp experience of Stalin's victims and their fate in post-Soviet Russia. As such, it is an essential companion to the work of Alexander Solzhenitsyn. Written and researched while Russian archives were most available and while there were still survivors to tell their stories, The Gulag survivor is a groundbreaking work in modern Russian history.

Book excerpt: "Hoppy is gone! What will we do?" My father replied. "Well, we just have to search for him." "Well, I'm sure he'll turn up in due time." There it was, the final anticipation that he would come home! However, I didn't buy it! Off to my room I went - dejected and devoid of all hope. The tears came quickly in the quiet of my room. Emotion, especially tears, was an expression of feelings that were not allowed in our household. As a matter of fact, this era did not support the outward showing of emotion period! It was the philosophy that, "Grown men don't cry!" Why not? Men were supposed to be strong, masculine and reserved. Showing other emotions diminished that role. Tears were not to be shown. Hugs and saying "I love you" were rarely seen nor were they acceptable. Terry Miller was born on August 25, 1939 in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. He grew up in the small town of Thurmont, Maryland during the 1940s and 50s. He was inspired to share this memoir dealing with the struggles of climbing life's mountains; more importantly, the victories achieved along the way. It takes the reader through life's experiences that evolve into personal growth lessons and lasting spiritual strengths. Terry resides with his wife on a five acre country setting in Waxahachie, Texas with their horses and a "free range" dog named Smokey. Terry and his wife have four grown children and six grandchildren. He retired from a career in banking and is the Director of Pastoral Care in Waxahachie Bible Church.
