Book excerpt: Allan Evans's groundbreaking biography of Ignaz Friedman gives the reader the behind and the between of the life and career of this extraordinary pianist. Friedman's repertory emphasized the major works of Beethoven, Schumann, Liszt, and Brahms, but he was perhaps best known for his interpretation of the Chopin mazurkas, which by all accounts he played with the same rhythmic nuance as their composer. Evans examines Friedman's life as a cultured Jewish musician from Poland; his studies in Leipzig and Vienna; his marriage to Manya Schidlowsky -- a Russian countess and relative of Tolstoy; and his performing career, teaching, and retirement in Australia.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Romanticism is a worldview that finds expression over a whole range of cultural fields—not only in literature and art but in philosophy, theology, political theory, and social movements. In Romanticism Against the Tide of Modernity Michael Löwy and Robert Sayre formulate a theory that defines romanticism as a cultural protest against modern bourgeois industrial civilization and work to reveal the unity that underlies the extraordinary diversity of romanticism from the eighteenth to the twenty-first century. After critiquing previous conceptions of romanticism and discussing its first European manifestations, Löwy and Sayre propose a typology of the sociopolitical positions held by romantic writers-from “restitutionist” to various revolutionary/utopian forms. In subsequent chapters, they give extended treatment to writers as diverse as Coleridge and Ruskin, Charles Peguy, Ernst Bloch and Christa Wolf. Among other topics, they discuss the complex relationship between Marxism and romanticism before closing with a reflection on more contemporary manifestations of romanticism (for example, surrealism, the events of May 1968, and the ecological movement) as well as its future. Students and scholars of literature, humanities, social sciences, and cultural studies will be interested in this elegant and thoroughly original book.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the nineteenth century, pedagogues often composed collections of etudes as a basis of instruction for young pupils. Many of these are still used in modern practice as a set of guidelines for well-balanced study and for the development of fundamentals of flute performance, such as tone and technical agility. Among these virtuosic instructors was Ernesto KÓʹhler (1849-1907), who was noted for his exemplary musicianship alongside his teaching methods for both flute and mandolin. His etude collection, 25 Romantische Et©ơden im modernen Stil, op.66, is appropriate for use by intermediate and advanced-intermediate flute students today. The moderate technical ability required, and the frequency with which KÓʹhler's works appear on all-state lists, both recommend study of his etudes. Despite this, there are relatively few scholarly works dedicated to the exploration of his compositions. This paper will be the first critical and performing edition of 25 Romantische Et©ơden. This edition was compiled by critically surveying multiple print editions of this collection of etudes. These etudes are then augmented with a performance guide, which will aid the performer in striking a balance between preserving the original attributes of these etudes and allowing for individual musical expression in their execution. Additionally, the author will explore a selection of flute systems in popular use at the time of this collection's composition and determine the impact this may have had on the etudes as a whole.
