Book excerpt: According to the Guiness Book of Records, "Happy Birthday To You!" is one of the world's most frequently sung songs. Words and music are by two sisters from Louisville, Kentucky: Patty Hill, a pioneer kindergarten teacher and Mildred Hill, a musician. They combined their talents to produce this song, suitable for children's voices as well as all others. Patty drew 3,000 teachers to a workshop she gave at the 1893 Chicago Worlds Fair. Shortly afterwards she was invited to establish the Department of Nursery School, Kindergarten, and First-Grade Education at Columbia University. She was the first woman to receive and honorary doctorate from Columbia.

Book Synopsis Intellectual Property Excesses by : Enrico Bonadio
Download or read book Intellectual Property Excesses written by Enrico Bonadio and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2022-06-30 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of essays highlights the sometimes absurd outcomes which an unjustified overprotection of intellectual property (IP) may lead to. It collects and comments on a series of IP disputes which have taken the notion of IP protection to extremes. From individuals being sued for hundreds of thousands of dollars for sharing a playlist, to sports spectators being arrested for wearing the 'wrong' dresses, passing through granting patents for inventions obtained by misappropriating traditional knowledge, and trademark protection of merely descriptive signs, this book brings together a broad range of examples from across the IP spectrum where protection and enforcement have been used or threatened on unreasonable and/or untenable grounds. The aim of the book is to criticise these excesses precisely because they harm IP; and because they contribute to creating an environment where more and more people are led to 'hate' IP, and view it as a protectionist regime which discourages creativity in innovation and ends up safeguarding the owners of monopolistic rights which restrict trade, competition and people's freedom. This is not, therefore, a book against IP, it is instead a call for change and an attempt to 'save' IP through critiquing its excesses and preventing such a fascinating area of law from continuing to be an easy target for criticism. The book includes a foreword by Jason Mazzone, Albert E Jenner Jr Professor of Law at the University of Illinois, USA.

Book Synopsis The Greatest Love Story Never Told by : Richard Orion
Download or read book The Greatest Love Story Never Told written by Richard Orion and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2015-10-30 with total page 710 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This story is based on a true love story that spanned almost two decades. The names and places have been changed to protect the privacy of the individuals involved in this affair. The chronological sequence of events has been maintained for continuity. All the stories and experiences are based on facts. This book is about a love story that was kept secret for 18 years and perhaps shouldve remained a secret. The first book related to this love story was a book of poems entitled Somewhere, Sometime, Somehow: Love Poems and Short Stories published in 2008 by this author and Xlibris. For the perceptive reader of this book one can trace the ups and downs of our love relationship. These 18 years were filled with robust love and passion for each other. Perhaps it was fantasy; perhaps it was the most real thing we will ever experience. The heartbreaking part of this love affair is that I am not really sure my lover ever really understood or appreciated my profound and unconditional love for her. I opened my heart to her through poetry and thoughtful letters, but she rarely showed me what was in her heart. Perhaps it was a one-sided love affair, but I surely think and hope not. I was convinced that she truly loved me through her words and actions. At least I experienced a pure love that I had only dreamed was possible. The story is told mainly through the exchange of letters and emails to each other. Perhaps readers can experience and hopefully feel the deep love we felt for each other.

Download or read book Where’S the Veil? written by Trish Rankin and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2012-01-03 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In times of loss, everyone experiences grief, whether from the loss of a marriage, the loss of a job, or the loss of a life. In grief, you are not alone, we often say to comfort grieving loved ones. But tell that to the woman who feels like her world has just been turned inside out. During two inconceivably difficult weeks, author Trish Rankins life radically morphs into something almost unrecognizable. Her husband dies of an inoperable brain tumor, and, simultaneously, their son suffers liver failure. To move forward together, both as partners and parents, on their God adventure, Trish and Dr. David Rankin chose to use the techniques she had taught for years in grief programs. In this honest, heartbreaking memoir, Trish lifts the veil on loss. She stares lovingly into the face of whats real: the shock, the agony, the suffering, the hope, the re-emergence, and, eventually, the ability to rediscover joy. Once she finds the strength to lift that metaphorical veil, she realizes that, like the butterfly emerging from its cocoon, her loss is the gateway to an awakeningand perhaps to creating a full life once again. Woven within this inspiring grief journey are techniques to help others on their own path to healing. Trish Rankins story is one of tragedy, deep struggle, and, ultimately, hope.
