Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Artificial intelligence (AI) has been much in the news recently, with some commentators expressing concern that AI might eventually replace humans. But many developments in AI are designed to enhance and supplement the performance of humans rather than replace them, and a novel field of study, with new approaches and solutions to the development of AI, has arisen to focus on this aspect of the technology. This book presents the proceedings of HHAI2023, the 2nd International Conference on Hybrid Human-Artificial Intelligence, held from 26-30 June 2023, in Munich, Germany. The HHAI international conference series is focused on the study of artificially intelligent systems that cooperate synergistically, proactively, responsibly and purposefully with humans, amplifying rather than replacing human intelligence, and invites contributions from various fields, including AI, human-computer interaction, the cognitive and social sciences, computer science, philosophy, among others. A total of 78 submissions were received for the main conference track, and most papers were reviewed by at least three reviewers. The overall final acceptance rate was 43%, with 14 contributions accepted as full papers, 14 as working papers, and 6 as extended abstracts. The papers presented here cover topics including interactive hybrid agents; hybrid intelligence for decision support; hybrid intelligence for health; and values such as fairness and trust in hybrid intelligence. We further accepted 17 posters and 4 demos as well as 8 students to the first HHAI doctoral consortium this year. The authors of 4 working papers and 2 doctoral consortium submissions opted for not publishing their submissions to allow a later full submission, resulting in a total of 57 papers included in this proceedings Addressing all aspects of AI systems that assist humans and emphasizing the need for adaptive, collaborative, responsible, interactive, and human-centered artificial intelligence systems which can leverage human strengths and compensate for human weaknesses while considering social, ethical, and legal considerations, the book will be of interest to all those working in the field.

Book excerpt: Building Energy Management Systems and Techniques: Principles, Methods, and Modelling presents basic concepts, methodologies, modeling techniques, and fundamental design schemes of building energy management systems. Covering the latest developments and methodologies from academia and industry, the book brings together energy management, demand response, evolutionary computation, and fundamental programming. The authors explore the basic concepts related to building energy management systems and put them into the context of smart grids, demand response and demand-side management, internet of things, and distributed renewable energy. Advanced topics provide the reader with an understanding of various energy management scenarios and procedures for modern buildings in an automatic and highly renewable-penetrated building environment. This includes a range of energy management techniques for building-side energy resources such as battery energy storage systems, plug-in appliances, and HVAC systems. The fundamental principles of evolutionary computation are covered and applied to building energy management problems. The authors also introduce the paradigm of occupant-to-grid integration and its implementation through personalized recommendation technology to guide the occupants’ choices on energy-related products and their energy usage behaviors, as well as to enhance the energy efficiency of buildings. The book includes several application examples throughout, illustrating for the reader the key aspects involved in the implementation of building energy management schemes. Building Energy Management Systems and Techniques is an invaluable resource for undergraduate and postgraduate students enrolled in courses related to energy-efficient building systems and smart grids and researchers working in the fields of smart grids, smart buildings/homes, and energy demand response. The book will be of use to professional electrical, civil, computing, and communications engineers, architects, and building energy consultants. Book excerpt: This book discusses power electronics, signal processing and communication systems applications in smart grids (SG). Smart grids can be considered an evolution of the classic energy model to allow a more efficient management of the relationship between supply and demand, in order to overcome the contingency problems of the modern world. To achieve their goals, they use advanced technologies of information and communication, power electronics and signal processing, and can be used to integrate renewable energy sources. The book is divided into two main parts. The first part presents the application of power electronics technologies in renewable energy systems, while the second part presents some telecommunications, signal processing and energy capture technologies within the context of SGs. The chapters are written by invited expert authors, according to their research areas.

This book was released on 2023-05-19 with total page 221 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers a comprehensive study concerning the reliability of renewable electricity production in the Faroe Islands. The first part reports on a RoadMap with investments in generation, storage and transmission capacity. Multiple scenarios, considering different technologies, are analysed. Practical constraints like the local resource potential, power plant locations and sizes are discussed, as well as the potential of tidal power. The second part of the book describes dynamic simulations studies carried out to investigate grid stability of the power system on the isolated island of Suðuroy. The available information about governor and automatic voltage regulators of the synchronous generators was very limited, therefore different approaches were combined to parameterise and validate the dynamic models. All in all, this book offers extensive information concerning the transition of the Faroese power system into a 100% renewable system. It is practice-oriented, and describes methods that can be applied to other power systems as well.
