Yannis Tsarouchis was a Greek painter whose multifarious practice spanned seven decades, from the 1920s to the 1980s. More than three decades after his death in 1989, the artist’s rich oeuvre remains relatively unknown outside of Greece, where he is recognized as one of the most important painters of the twentieth century. This catalogue is published on the occasion of the first major survey of his work outside of his home country, which is also the first exhibition in the United States devoted to his work. The show brings together over two hundred paintings, drawings, watercolors, stage designs, and photographs, including portraits of anonymous youths, homoerotically charged mise-en-scènes, and major allegorical paintings referencing religious iconography augmented with contemporary costumes and props. The foundation of Tsarouchis’s artistic sensibility involved negotiating the difference between the promise of modernization and the spell of tradition, as well as the gradual elaboration of this difference in his personal politics, which aimed at subverting the gender binary. Portraying solitary young men in interiors—daydreaming, gazing pensively, reclining, relaxing, and enjoying their own company—Tsarouchis formulated a unique artistic language. His works establish their own symbolic universe, mixing personal memory, loss, and desire, pointing to the negotiation and transgression of limits between art and the everyday that were central to his work and philosophy. Yannis Tsarouchis: Dancing in Real Life includes numerous works spanning the artist’s career, including his thirteen-year exile in Paris, showing how he absorbed and transformed such influences as Greek folk traditions; ancient Greek and early Christian art; Byzantine mosaics, frescoes, and icon painting; the Greek shadow theater of Karaghiozis; and even the new languages of modern art (cubism, fauvism, and surrealism). In one such magazine, he found a photograph of bodybuilder Glenn Bishop on Fire Island. "Fire Island sounded exotic, perhaps a name made up by the photographer," he recalls in the preface to his latest monograph. "I had no idea it was a real place. Certainly, I had no idea then that it was a place I would one day call home." In 1970, fresh out of law school, Bianchi began traveling to New York, and was invited to spend a weekend at Fire Island Pines, where he encountered a community of gay men. Using an SX-70 Polaroid camera, Bianchi documented his friends' lives in the Pines, amassing an image archive of people, parties and private moments. These images, published here for the first time, and accompanied by Bianchi's moving memoir of the era, record the birth and development of a new culture. Soaked in sun, sex, camaraderie and reverie, Fire Island Pines conjures a magical bygone era. Tom Bianchi was born and raised in the suburbs of Chicago and graduated from Northwestern University School of Law in 1970. He became a corporate attorney, eventually working with Columbia Pictures in New York, painting and drawing on weekends. His artwork came to the attention of Betty Parsons and Carol Dreyfuss and they gave him his first one-man painting show in 1980. In 1984, he was given his first solo museum exhibition at the Spoleto Festival. After Bianchi's partner died of AIDS in 1988, he turned his focus to photography, producing Out of the Studio, a candid portrayal of gay intimacy. Even voodoo and the paranormal make a surprising (and very convincing!) appearance, as does the likes of HRH Diana, Princess of Wales, among others. In their respective forewords, Lord Paul Boateng says the book has "a searing honesty", and Peter Tatchell, the renowned human rights activist, refers to it as "painful and shocking in its exposure of raw prejudice." Sir Nick Partridge, CEO of the Terrence Higgins Trust, describes the book as "remarkable, sobering and powerful." Scott rips into 'shame-inducing religion', but most compellingly, he relives the truly horrific impact of HIV and AIDS on both gay and heterosexual communities in the 80s and 90s. With 75 million people directly affected around the globe, including 35 million deaths, God's Other Children captures the essence and relevance of World AIDS Day; walking in Scott's shoes, the reader lives the pain and tears of too many premature goodbyes caused by a terrifying and merciless killer disease. Finding himself at the forefront of the response to the crisis, he recalls the period as "a conveyor belt of death and dying"; acknowledges HIV as a virus of equal opportunity; and sees the pain it causes as human, not gay, straight, black, or white. A triumphant if tragic debut, the Polari judges and ordinary readers are full of praise for good reason. Both the book and its author are deserving of the highest possible commendation.
