Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Genetic algorithms are playing an increasingly important role in studies of complex adaptive systems, ranging from adaptive agents in economic theory to the use of machine learning techniques in the design of complex devices such as aircraft turbines and integrated circuits. Adaptation in Natural and Artificial Systems is the book that initiated this field of study, presenting the theoretical foundations and exploring applications. In its most familiar form, adaptation is a biological process, whereby organisms evolve by rearranging genetic material to survive in environments confronting them. In this now classic work, Holland presents a mathematical model that allows for the nonlinearity of such complex interactions. He demonstrates the model's universality by applying it to economics, physiological psychology, game theory, and artificial intelligence and then outlines the way in which this approach modifies the traditional views of mathematical genetics. Initially applying his concepts to simply defined artificial systems with limited numbers of parameters, Holland goes on to explore their use in the study of a wide range of complex, naturally occuring processes, concentrating on systems having multiple factors that interact in nonlinear ways. Along the way he accounts for major effects of coadaptation and coevolution: the emergence of building blocks, or schemata, that are recombined and passed on to succeeding generations to provide, innovations and improvements.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ``It is difficult to define the genre of the book. It is not a problem book, nor a textbook, nor a `book for reading about mathematics'. It is most of all reminiscent of a good lecture course, from which a thoughtful student comes away with more than was actually spoken about in the lectures.'' --from the Preface by A. S. Merkurjev If you are acquainted with mathematics at least to the extent of a standard high school curriculum and like it enough to want to learn more, and if, in addition, you are prepared to do some serious work, then you should start studying this book. An understanding of the material of the book requires neither a developed ability to reason abstractly nor skill in using the refined techniques of mathematical analysis. In each chapter elementary problems are considered, accompanied by theoretical material directly related to them. There are over 300 problems in the book, most of which are intended to be solved by the reader. In those places in the book where it is natural to introduce concepts outside the high school syllabus, the corresponding definitions are given with examples. And in order to bring out the meaning of such concepts clearly, appropriate (but not too many) theorems are proved concerning them. Unfortunately, what is sometimes studied at school under the name ``mathematics'' resembles real mathematics not any closer than a plucked flower gathering dust in a herbarium or pressed between the pages of a book resembles that same flower in the meadow besprinkled with dewdrops sparkling in the light of the rising sun.

Book excerpt: Before you can present information to others, you must understand its story. Now You See It teaches the concepts, principles, and practices of visual data sensemaking. The skills taught in this book rely primarily on something that most of us possess--vision--interactively using graphs to find and examine the meaningful patterns and relationships that reside in quantitative data. Although some questions about quantitative data can only be answered using sophisticated statistical techniques, most can be answered using relatively simple visual data sensemaking skills. Until Now You See It was published, no book taught these basic skills comprehensively and in a way that was accessible to a broad audience. Even though these skills can be developed by anyone with eyes to see, they are not intuitive--they must be learned. Without these skills, even the best data visualization tools are of little use, and data will remain nothing but noise.

Book excerpt: Clerkenwell Boy and Serena Guen originally came up with the idea to curate one charity dinner, with one chef, in aid of UNICEF UK's humanitarian work helping children and refugees affected by the crisis in Syria. This quickly became a large-scale banquet with six headline chefs which sold out within in days. Leveraging the power of social media, top chefs, cookbook authors and families with links to Syria were encouraged to share their favorite recipes online with a #CookForSyria inspired twist--so that anyone could host their own charity supper club or bake sale, or just learn about the amazing cuisine and culture of Syria. As recipes flooded in, it made sense to share these beyond social media and in the form of a beautiful not-for-profit recipe book. All profits from the sale of the book will be donated in aid of UNICEF's Children of Syria Fund. Contributors include Amelia Freer, Angela Hartnett, Anna Jones, Chetna Makan, Ed Smith, Ella Woodward, Elly Curshen, Fergus Henderson, Hemsley+Hemsley, Henrietta Inman, Izy Hossack, Jamie Oliver, John Gregory-Smith, Jos Pizarro, Kylee Newton, Lily Vanilli, Martin Morales, Nuno Mendes, Olia Hercules, Selin Kiazim, Skye Gyngell, Symmetry Breakfast, Yotam Ottolenghi, and more.
